Assam Rifles chief stresses importance of maintaining security of India-Myanmar border & Kashmir

Shillong, March 25 (IANS) Assam Rifles Director General, Lieutenant General Vikas Lakhera, on Tuesday, emphasised the importance of maintaining security and sanctity of the India-Myanmar border and the Kashmir valley, officials said.

Addressing the Assam Rifles Commander Conference-2025, Lieutenant General Lakhera said here that the paramilitary force should be prepared for all contingencies and security challenges arising in the future.

He stressed on the importance of maintaining security and sanctity of the unfenced India-Myanmar border and Kashmir valley.

The counter-insurgency trained Assam Rifles have been guarding the 1,643-km unfenced India-Myanmar border with four northeastern states — Arunachal Pradesh (520 km), Manipur (398 km), Nagaland (215 km) and Mizoram (510 km).

Besides the northeastern states, the Assam Rifles are also deployed in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Assam Rifles Commander Conference 2025 was held at the forces’ headquarters at Laitkor in Shillong and the formation commanders, battalion commanders, and staff officers from headquarters of Director-General of Assam Rifles and various formations attended the meet.

According to a Defence spokesman, the other important highlights of the Commander Conference was discussions on enhancing the capability and combat potential of the Assam Rifles, preparing a roadmap on acquisition of new generation weapon systems and military equipment for Assam Rifles and sharing of best practices among formations and units and lessons learned to enhance overall efficiency of the force.

The Commander Conference also emphasised on training and skill development of soldiers.

The Assam Rifles Director General complimented the Formation and unit Commanders for ensuring peace and tranquility in their respective areas of responsibility.

He also exhorted them to be ever vigilant on the volatile and dynamic environment under which the force operates.

The Defence spokesman said that the Assam Rifles Commander Conference 2025 provides a valuable platform for the Commanders to deliberate on critical issues related to combat potential, operational readiness, administrative issues and human resource management issues.

At the occasion, the top three distinguished formations and units were felicitated with the prestigious Rajbhasha Trophies 2025 for their exceptional contribution towards the promotion and implementation of Hindi language in which 27th Assam Rifles secured first prize, Headquarter Inspectorate General Assam Rifles (South) received the second prize and the 28th Assam Rifles Battalion clinched the third prize.

The conference concluded with a renewed commitment from all attendees to uphold the highest standards of operational excellence and continuously strive for excellence in all spheres, the spokesman added.

Rajouri, Feb 4 (IANS) The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) has brought major relief to the residents of Union Territory (UT), particularly those battling life-threatening diseases like cancer.

A Rajouri-based hospital is providing free medical treatment to not just residents of the city but also from adjoining districts including Reasi and Poonch.

PM-JAY beneficiaries, armed with the Ayushman Golden Card scheme, are drawing benefits from the scheme and getting free of cost treatment at the hospital. Patients and their attendants are expressing deep gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making free treatment accessible, in both government and private hospitals.

Several patients admitted to GMC Rajouri shared how, before the launch of this scheme, poor families were forced to sell their homes and properties to afford expensive medication and treatment but that is no longer the case. With 100 per cent free treatment available under the scheme, the financial burden on underprivileged families has been completely lifted.

“This scheme has given us new hope. Earlier, we had to struggle for money to get treatment, but now we can receive medical care without worrying about expenses,” said an attendant of a cancer patient at GMC Rajouri.

Shabir Ahmed, whose mother is being treated at the hospital said that they are very thankful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for providing medical benefits to poor and marginalised classes under the scheme.

Abdul Hakim, doctor and associate professor at GMC Rajouri Medical College speaking to IANS said the hospital provides day care service as well as OPD besides chemotherapy sessions for cancer patients.

“Under the Golden card of the PM-JAY scheme, patients get expensive medicines free of cost. Patients from Rajouri, Poonch and Reasi are primarily the patients here. They are provided free chemotherapy treatment,” he said.

He added that it’s only after the exhaustion of medical insurance that some patients have to shell money from their pockets.

The Ayushman Bharat scheme, initiated by the Modi government continues to benefit thousands of people across Rajouri and other districts of Jammu and Kashmir as it ensures that no one is denied healthcare due to financial constraints.

Priyanka Gandhi, Anurag Thakur among 31 members of JPC on ‘One Nation, One Election’

New Delhi, Dec 18 (IANS) A Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) has been constituted to review the proposed ‘One Nation, One Election’ legislation. The committee comprises 31 members, with 21 from the Lok Sabha and 10 from the Rajya Sabha. Its primary task will be to examine the feasibility and framework for conducting simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies.

The JPC will focus on reviewing the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which aim to align elections at the national and state levels.

The Bills were introduced in the Lok Sabha by Law Minister Arjun Meghwal and have now been referred to the committee for further scrutiny.

The committee will also evaluate proposals for synchronising elections in Union Territories, including Puducherry, Delhi, and Jammu and Kashmir, with the Lok Sabha elections.

Among the members of the JPC are Priyanka Gandhi Vadra (Congress), Anurag Thakur and Anil Baluni (BJP), as well as other opposition leaders such as Kalyan Banerjee (TMC), and Dharmendra Yadav (Samajwadi Party). The committee’s discussions and recommendations will be the key to shaping the future of India’s electoral process.

The Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha by Law Minister Arjun Meghwal following a debate lasting nearly 90 minutes. After a division of votes, the Bill was passed with 269 MPs voting in favour and 198 voting against it.

Lok Sabha MPs in the committee are P.P. Chaudhary, C. M. Ramesh, Bansuri Swaraj, Parshottam Rupala, Anurag Singh Thakur, Vishnu Dayal Ram, Bhartruhari Mahtab, Sambit Patra, Anil Baluni, Vishnu Datt Sharma, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Manish Tewari, Sukhdeo Bhagat, Dharmendra Yadav, Kalyan Banerjee, T. M. Selvaganapathi, GM Harish Balayogi, Supriya Sule, Shrikant Shinde, Chandan Chauhan and Balashowry Vallabhaneni.

While the government argues that simultaneous elections will streamline governance and reduce costs, opposition parties have raised concerns about its impact on the federal structure. The JPC will play a pivotal role in addressing these concerns and building consensus on this landmark electoral reform.

The committee is expected to submit its report before the next parliamentary session, setting the stage for further discussions on what is being described as one of the most transformative proposals in India’s electoral history.

90 lakh houses delivered to slum dwellers in cities under PMAY-U

New Delhi, March 17 (IANS) A total of 6.54 crore people comprising 1.39 crore households are living in slums across the country and 90.60 lakh houses have been completed/delivered to beneficiaries from slums under PMAY-U till March 3, 2025, the Parliament was informed on Monday.

Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, Tokhan Sahu, told Rajya Sabha in a reply that the figure on slum households was based on the last Census conducted in 2011.

Under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U), a total of 118.64 lakh houses have been sanctioned by the Ministry, of which 112.46 lakh have seen start of work on the ground for construction and 90.60 lakh have been completed/delivered to the beneficiaries as on March 3, 2025, he said.

He said the scheme period has been extended up to December 31, 2025 to complete the houses sanctioned without changing the funding pattern and implementation methodology.

The MoS said the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) supplements the efforts of States/UTs by providing Central assistance under PMAY-U since June 25, 2015 to provide pucca houses in urban areas including slums across the country through four verticals – Beneficiary-led individual house construction/enhancements (BLC), Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP), In-Situ Slum Redevelopment (ISSR) and Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS).

The timeline for completion of projects varies from state to state and generally it takes 12-36 months in different verticals of the scheme and as per Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) of respective projects, the MoS said.

MoS Sahu said based on the learning from the experiences of nine years of implementation of PMAY-U, the Ministry has revamped the scheme and launched PMAY-U 2.0 ‘Housing for All’ Mission with effect from September 1, 2024 for one crore additional eligible beneficiaries.

As on date, 30 states/UTs have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) and in principle approval of 6.77 lakh houses has been given to such States/UTs, the MoS said.
