BGT: Pujara advises Rohit to score first 20-30 runs steadily

New Delhi, Dec 11 (IANS) Veteran India batter Cheteshwar Pujara has advised skipper Rohit Sharma to focus on getting his 20 or 30 runs in a steady mode, following which can help him amass a big score and break his poor run of form in Tests.

Rohit could only muster nine runs over the two innings as a number six batter in India’s ten-wicket defeat to Australia at the Adelaide Oval. Moreover, Rohit’s average in his last six Tests is just 11.83. With the current five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series locked at 1-1, India would need for Rohit to hit top form in the third Test, starting on December 14 in Brisbane.

“First of all, I would like Rohit Sharma to come back to form as soon as possible. Because when he scores runs, it will affect his captaincy as well. When a captain is out of form, it affects his captaincy as well. So, I think when scores runs, it will affect his captaincy.

“Rohit Sharma is an experienced player. He knows how to score runs when batting. He is going through some bad form. But even there, a start is very important for him. He should focus on getting his first 20 or 30 runs steadily. After that, he can capitalise on the start and convert it into a big score. So, hopefully, when he comes in the first half or quarter of an hour, he should focus on getting a start,” said Pujara to Star Sports.

Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh stated that Rohit’s form plays a crucial hand in him succeeding in his role as the team’s skipper. “As a captain, I would like Rohit Sharma to make runs. When he scores runs, he will think better and do better things.

“No matter how big a player is, he is always worried about his performance. There is no doubt that when a player scores runs, he makes a better decision. So, let’s hope that Rohit Sharma scores some runs so that his captaincy gets better.”

Mohan Babu has blunt injury below eye, say doctors

Hyderabad, Dec 11 (IANS) Veteran Tollywood actor Manchu Mohan Babu had a blunt injury below the left eye when he was brought to the hospital on Tuesday, doctors at Continental Hospitals said on Wednesday.

Dr Guru N. Reddy, Chairman and Managing Director of Continental Hospital told the media that Mohan Babu was upset and was not in a frame of mind to understand what was going on.

Mohan Babu is currently under the care of an expert team of doctors consisting of cardiologists, neurologists, plastic surgeons and others. He required close monitoring and observation, Dr Reddy said.

Mohan Babu was admitted to the hospital after a clash at his house in Jalpally when his actor son Manchu Manoj barged in amid a bitter dispute between them.

Mohan Babu, who is also a former Member of Parliament, also attacked a TV reporter with a mike when the latter asked him about the rift with his son.

According to the medical bulletin, Mohan Babu was brought to the hospital at 8.30 p.m. with complaints of diffuse body pains, anxiety and a history of loss of consciousness.

“He was given immediate and necessary medical care by the specialists in the Emergency Department, and following a thorough examination, he was found to have a blunt injury below the left eye and had high blood pressure, increased heart rate, and excessive heart rate fluctuations. Immediately, all of the respective specialists attended to him,” reads the bulletin.

Plastic surgeon Dr Raghuveer said that further line of treatment will be decided after a CT scan.

Meanwhile, Mohan Babu’s elder son and actor Manchu Vishnu told the media at the hospital that his father was injured in Tuesday’s clash at the house. He remarked that their father loved them too much and this was his mistake.

“Ours is a joint family. It’s unfortunate that this has happened. This has caused us immense pain but we hope that the issue will be resolved,” he said.

Stating that every family will have problems, the actor requested media not to create a sensation. He said that while he agrees that the media has to inform the people, some people were crossing the limits.

Vishnu said that his mother had also been admitted to the hospital and he as the elder son was in pain.

The actor said that he was in Los Angeles for the post-production of ‘Kannappa’ but left everything to return home on Tuesday after learning about the discord.

Vishnu said that a reporter getting injured in Tuesday’s incident was unfortunate. He added that the act was not deliberate and that their father came before the media by doing ‘namskar’ but when a mike was put close to his mouth, he attacked on an impulse. He assured all help to the family of the injured journalist.

Siddaramaiah’s concern for Wayanad sign of slavery, says BJP Leader C.T. Ravi

Bengaluru, Dec 11 (IANS) Criticising the offer of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to the Kerala government to build 100 houses in landslide ravaged Wayanad, the BJP on Wednesday chided his concern as a sign of slavery.

Priyanka Gandhi represents the Wayanad Lok Sabha Constituency which was hit by major landslides this year in which over 200 people lost their lives as two villages were swept away.

BJP MLC and former National General Secretary, C.T. Ravi stated that the Karnataka government has given assurances of building houses for the victims of the landslide.

“The gesture is right in terms of humanity. However, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s concern in this regard does not seem to be out of concern for humanity. This is a clear sign of slavery. Wayanad was represented by the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi and presently it is represented by Priyanka Gandhi. The government in the state is not bothered about maternal deaths, suicide of farmers. The state government does not care about the farmer who ended life after fighting with an officer,” Ravi claimed.

“Mr. CM Siddaramaiah, you don’t care about the crisis in the state. Your Wayanad concern is a sign of slavery,” Ravi alleged.

“We will raise the issue in the state legislature. There has to be a probe by the Special Investigation Team over maternal deaths and deaths of newborn babies,” Ravi slammed.

“The Congress leaders are occupied answering allegations faced by CM Siddaramaiah. The government is focussed on protecting its interests and not the interest of the state,” Ravi claimed.

In February, the Congress-led Karnataka government had announced Rs 15 lakh relief for the family of a person who was killed in an elephant attack in Kerala.

The Siddaramaiah government had stated that the elephant had strayed into Kerala from Bandipur forest of Karnataka.

Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre had announced the compensation after meeting CM Siddaramaiah.

However, when the issue turned controversial, the family from Kerala had refused compensation from the Karnataka government.

Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar’s statement to clear night traffic restrictions in Bandipur reserve forest area during campaigning for Wayanad Lok Sabha elections also triggered controversy.

In his letter to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan recently, CM Siddaramaiah stated, “Kindly recall that during my visit to Wayanad following the unfortunate landslide incident, I had announced my government’s commitment to donate 100 houses to support the affected families.

“This initiative was aimed at providing a secure and stable environment for those who have lost their homes, livelihoods, and dear ones. The announcement was duly communicated to the Chief Secretary of Kerala for further coordination.

“It is concerning that no communication has been received from the Government of Kerala regarding the necessary guidelines or directions to implement this project, preventing us from moving forward with the commitment.

“To facilitate this initiative, I also wish to convey that my government is ready to purchase land required for constructing the houses, ensuring swift progress in providing relief to the affected families.”

“Looking forward to your response and collaboration on this matter,” the CM stated in his letter to his counterpart in Kerala.

I’m committed to partnering Ashwini as long as she continues: Tanisha Crasto

New Delhi, Dec 11 (IANS) Young Indian shuttler Tanisha Crasto has revealed that she committed to ace shuttler Ashwini Ponnappa as her doubles partner as long as the 35-year-old continues to play badminton. Tanisha and Ashwini successfully defended their women’s doubles title at the Guwahati Masters Super 100 badminton tournament last week, their second tournament together after the Paris Olympics. The women’s duo also made it to the semifinals of the Syed Modi India International.

With her preference for mixed doubles, Tanisha is forming a solid partnership with Dhruv Kapila. The duo started playing together at the Syed Modi International at the end of last year and made the semifinal after a year at the same event.

Speaking to IANS about her plans for future tournaments, Tanisha said, “So, I’m just starting with mixed and not really keeping my expectations very high, as very recently Dhruv had a big tear in his ankle; he just made it before the Syed Modi, and thankfully, we’ve played well. I feel like he still needs a lot of rest, so I’m not thinking very far off.

“We’re really focusing on the tournaments that are happening in January because we’ve got an entry in the Super 1000, 750 and 500 and I feel these tournaments are going to be very important for us because it’s a good place for us to get good points and improve our ranking. After that, we focus on the All England that’s happening in March/April time. So, that’s what it is for mixed doubles,” she said.

Speaking about her relationship with Ashwini on and off the court, Tanisha said, “In the women’s doubles, I don’t know yet when Ashwini Didi will be playing, but I have given her a commitment that I shall continue with her until she is playing. We’re not going to be very result-orientated, and in the coming time, we’re just going to enjoy and play badminton to have fun.”

“My relationship and partnership with her is great and the best it has been till now with anyone, it has been with her. The partnership throughout this entire year has also been super great; we’ve learnt so much together as a pair and I’ve learnt so much from her as an individual. There’s no senior-junior thing that happens between us. I think both of us respect one another equally. Of course, she has a lot of experience.

“She’s been in this sport longer than I have been. I really like taking her advice during our matches but there are times when I feel certain things on the court and I think that it is the best for the situation and she 100 percent respects that. I think it’s mutual and that’s what is the best part of our partnership,” she added.

Tanisha marked her Olympic debut earlier this year at the Paris Olympics and competed in the women’s doubles category with Ashwini, who was playing her third Olympics.

Reflecting on her experience from the Olympics, the 21-year-old shuttler said, “It was super great. I am really happy that I made it to the Olympics on the first attempt. Playing against those higher-ranked players gave us really good exposure and it was helpful for us because we got to play with them again in the future.”

There was so much learning that happened. We knew it was a tough competition, but we were really, really up for it and we enjoyed every match and gave it all on the court. We did as much as we could and we are happy with the way we played. We really wish we could have played more rounds ahead, but we’re very happy with what we’ve done,” she signed off.

Addressing ethical challenges of AI, making social media accountable on fake news: Ashwini Vaishnaw

New Delhi, Dec 11 (IANS) Ethical issues in artificial intelligence (AI) and spread of fake news are global concerns and India is committed to addressing these challenges through robust debate and responsible innovation, while fixing accountability on social media platforms, Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, said on Wednesday.

Addressing the Parliament, the minister highlighted the critical challenges posed by the emerging AI landscape, social media accountability, and the need for robust legal frameworks.

The minister underlined the importance of balancing freedom of speech with the responsibility to combat fake news and ensure accurate narratives in the digital age.

“It is a major challenge that societies across the world are facing — the accountability of social media, particularly in the context of fake news and the creation of fake narratives,” Vaishnaw remarked.

“These are the issues where freedom of speech comes on one hand and accountability and having a proper real news network getting created, on the other. These are things which need to be debated and if the house agrees and if there is a consensus in the entire society we can come up with the new law,” the IT Minister noted.

The Union Minister also addressed concerns about privacy and AI governance, sharing details of proactive measures taken by the government to develop indigenous tools and technologies.

Under the ‘India AI Mission’, one of the key pillars is application development, focusing on innovations that align with the country’s unique requirements.

“To address the emerging landscape of AI, we have initiated eight projects aimed at creating tools and technologies within the country,” he informed.

Highlighting India’s global leadership in AI, the minister said that the country is one of the leading ones in shaping global thought on AI governance.

“India’s voice continues to hold significant weight in discussions with international bodies, including the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and United Nations,” he said.

Places of Worship Act: Mathura Shahi Eidgah mosque files intervention application in SC

New Delhi, Dec 11 (IANS) A day ahead of the crucial hearing in the Supreme Court on pleas challenging the validity of the Places of Worship Act, 1991, the Committee of Management of Mathura’s Shahi Masjid Eidgah, on Wednesday, filed an intervention application, saying that the law was enacted by Parliament in the interest of the country’s progress, which has stood the test of time for more than 33 years.

The application said that the validity of the law, prohibiting the alteration of religious places of worship as they stood on August 15, 1945, has been upheld by a Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court in M. Siddiq (D) Thr. Lrs. vs. Mahant Suresh Das & Ors. case.

It added that Parliament, in the exercise of its powers and in the interest of the forward progress of the country, had enacted the 1991 Act, which has stood the test of time for more than 33 years and the petitioners have chosen to challenge the enactment belatedly, after 29 years.

Further, it said that the adjudication of the petitions against the Places of Worship Act is likely to have a significant bearing on the adjudication of its special leave petitions pending before the apex court against the dismissal of their application filed under Order VII Rule 11 of the CPC (Code of Civil Procedure) and the pending suits against the applicant mosque committee.

The application said that the mosque committee is party to 17 different suits being tried by the Allahabad High Court, where the plaintiffs have staked a claim over the entire parcel of land over which the Shahi Masjid Eidgah has been built, and have further sought the removal of the mosque structure from the said land, claiming the same to have been built over Krishna Janm Sthan.

“It would be in the interest of justice if the applicant (mosque committee) is allowed to intervene and assist this Hon’ble Court in the adjudication of the issues (relating to the validity of Places of Worship Act, 1991),” the application said.

The Supreme Court has notified a 3-judge Special Bench to hear a clutch of petitions challenging the validity of certain provisions of the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991.

As per the causelist published on the website of the apex court, a special bench headed by CJI Sanjiv Khanna and comprising Justices Sanjay Kumar and K.V. Vishwanathan will hear the matter on December 12.

A similar application has been moved by the Managing Committee of Varanasi’s Gyanvapi Mosque before the top court, saying that the consequences of declaring the 1991 Act unconstitutional are bound to be drastic and will obliterate the rule of law and communal harmony.

The mosque committee said that an Article 32 petition challenging a legislative enactment must indicate the unconstitutionality of the provisions based on constitutional principles and the rhetorical arguments seeking a sort of retribution against the perceived acts of previous rulers cannot be made the basis for a constitutional challenge.

“The Parliament, in its wisdom, enacted the legislation as a recognition of secular values of the Constitution. The applicant humbly submits that while this Hon’ble Court considers this challenge to the 1991 Act, the petition may be dismissed as being devoid of merits,” the application had added.
