Defamation case: Delhi HC issues contempt notice to Trinamool MP Saket Gokhale

New Delhi, Dec 23 (IANS) The Delhi High Court on Monday issued a notice to Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Saket Gokhale over his failure to pay Rs 50 lakh damages to former diplomat Lakshmi Puri, wife of Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.

A bench of Justice Manoj Jain was hearing a contempt plea filed by Lakshmi Puri against Saket Gokhale for the latter’s “wilful and deliberate non-compliance” of the Delhi HC judgment.

Issuing notice, Justice Jain-led Bench ordered Saket Gokhale to file an affidavit disclosing all his assets, properties, and bank accounts and deposits within the next four weeks.

The matter will be heard next on February 5 next year.

In its July 1 decision, the Delhi High Court had ordered the Trinamool Congress leader to pay Rs 50 lakh damages in a defamation case filed by former diplomat Lakshmi Puri.

It had also directed Saket Gokhale to publish an apology in a newspaper and on his social media platform “X” handle within four weeks for publishing wrong and unverified allegations.

Further, the Delhi HC had directed that the apology tweet published on Saket Gokhale’s X account should be retained for six months.

In the latest plea, Lakshmi Puri contended that Saket Gokhale should be punished for his non-compliance and willful disobedience of the court’s decision.

The contempt plea added that Saket Gokhale was completely aware of the July 1 judgment passed against him, and he had also published related tweets on his social media handle.

The defamation suit was filed following Saket Gokhale’s successive X posts accusing Lakshmi Puri of purchasing property in Switzerland disproportionate to her income. He also named Hardeep Puri in the tweets.

The Delhi High Court had held that the plaintiff suffered irreparable harm on account of Saket Gokhale’s defamatory statements.

It said: “The defendant (Gokhale) is restrained from publishing further defamatory content against the plaintiff. Damages to the tune of Rs 50,00,000 are awarded to the plaintiff for the harm caused to her reputation.”

Mohd Shami deemed not fit for selection in remaining Border-Gavaskar Trophy games, says BCCI

New Delhi, Dec 23 (IANS) Veteran India fast-bowler Mohammed Shami has been deemed not fit for selection in the remaining two Test matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy due to concerns over left knee swelling and the requirement of more time for controlled exposure to bowling loads, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) informed on Monday.

After fully recovering from a heel injury and subsequent surgery that kept him out of action for nearly a year, Shami made a successful comeback to professional cricket through Bengal’s fifth-round match in the Ranji Trophy against Madhya Pradesh at Indore, where he took seven wickets in his team’s win and bowled 43 overs. He also led the Bengal bowling attack in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy recently, picking up nine wickets in 11 games at an economy rate of 7.85, with a best of 3-21 against Hyderabad, before they lost to Baroda in the quarterfinals in Bengaluru.

BCCI’s Sports Science head Nitin Patel, strength and conditioning coach Nishanta Bordoloi, along with selectors Ajay Ratra and SS Das, have been on the ground on various occasions to assess Shami’s fitness and let the Indian team management in Australia know about his progress.

With Shami coming back to competitive cricket, hopes had built of him joining the Indian team for the Test tour of Australia. But a fitness update on Shami from Devajit Saikia, the BCCI Joint Secretary, dashed all hopes of the pacer playing the last two Test matches in Australia.

Saikia said Shami, who also engaged in additional bowling sessions on the sidelines of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy matches to build his bowling volume in order to get ready for the Test matches, has exhibited minor swelling in his left knee due to increased joint loading from his bowling workload.

“The swelling is on the expected lines, owing to the increased bowling after a prolonged period. Based on the current medical assessment, the BCCI Medical Team has determined that his knee requires more time for controlled exposure to bowling loads. Consequently, he has not been deemed fit for consideration for the remaining two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy,” he said.

Saikia also said Shami will continue to undergo targeted strength and conditioning work under the guidance of the medical staff at BCCI’s Centre of Excellence and build his bowling loads needed to meet the demands of the longest format of the game. Shami had been rested from Bengal’s first Vijay Hazare Trophy league stage match in Hyderabad on December 21 and Saikia added his participation in the 50-over competition will depend on the progress of his left knee.

After the Brisbane Test ended, India captain Rohit Sharma called upon the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to provide an update on Shami’s progress when asked about it in the post-match press conference.

But with the BCCI making it clear that Shami won’t go to Australia, India’s fast-bowling options in Australia will continue to be Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, Harshit Rana, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Prasidh Krishna.

EAM Jaishankar to visit US ahead of Trump’s second term

New Delhi, Dec 23 (IANS) External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar will visit the United States of America from December 24-29, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated on Monday.

“He will be meeting counterparts to discuss key bilateral, regional and global issues. During the visit, EAM will also chair a conference of the Consul Generals of India in the USA,” mentioned a statement issued by the MEA.

The significant visit takes place before US President-elect Donald Trump takes the oath of office to start his second term on January 20.

Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had dialled Trump and said that he is looking forward to working closely together once again with the Republican Party leader who emerged victorious in the Presidential elections by defeating his Democratic Party rival Kamala Harris.

“Had a great conversation with my friend, President Donald Trump, congratulating him on his spectacular victory. Looking forward to working closely together once again to further strengthen India-US relations across technology, defence, energy, space and several other sectors,” PM Modi, among the first foreign leaders to congratulate Trump on his election triumph, posted on X.

Both leaders had affirmed the resolution to work together for global peace with Trump reportedly saying that the whole world loves PM Modi, adding that India is a magnificent country and the Indian Prime Minister “a magnificent man”.

At the same time, PM Modi had also developed a great rapport with the US President Joe Biden and relations grew between the two democracies in the four years of his presidency during which the two leaders met personally several times.

They had recently met on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Brazil and at the US President’s weekend home in Delaware in September.

Biden had also visited India last year for the G20 summit hosted by PM Modi, during which they also held bilateral meetings.

Biden hosted PM Modi on a state visit to Washington last year showcasing pageantry, and said of PM Modi, “Each time, I was struck by our ability to find new areas of cooperation. Together, we’re unlocking a shared future of what I believe to be unlimited potential”.

PM Modi and Biden upgraded the Quad, the group for Indo-Pacific cooperation comprising also Japan and Australia, to the summit level.

They also set up the I2U2 group of India, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States to mirror the Quad on the western side of India.

Healthcare makes substantial progress in India in 2024

New Delhi, Dec 23 (IANS) From expanding health coverage to all elderly above 70 years of age to promoting cervical cancer vaccination among young girls to slashing customs duty on cancer drugs and improving several disease rates, India has made substantial progress in healthcare in 2024.

In 2024, the Union government continued its emphasis on tackling non-communicable diseases and allocating funds for research in the healthcare sector.

The Union Budget 2024-25’s total outlay for the health sector was Rs 89,287 crore, amounting to 1.85 per cent of the budget expenditure. While it remains below the 2 per cent mark for health outlays from FY18 to FY22, it is marginally up from 1.76 per cent, and Rs 79,221 crore in the revised estimate for budget 2023-24.

It exempted customs duty on three crucial cancer drugs — Trastuzumab deruxtecan (for breast cancer), Osimertinib (lung cancer drug for EGFR mutation), and Durvalumab (for lung and biliary tract cancers).

In addition, GST rates for these drugs were also slashed — from 12 per cent to 5 per cent; the maximum retail price (MRP) was reduced for these drugs.

Further, the flagship health insurance scheme Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) was expanded to provide health coverage to all senior citizens above 70 years irrespective of their income.

The government has also worked towards medical education and infrastructure. In his address to the nation on Independence Day, PM Narendra Modi promised to create 75,000 more medical seats in the next five years, from the current over one lakh in the country to reduce foreign dependence in medical education. The government added 5,150 more seats for MBBS courses in 2024.

Over two lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs have been established across the country to facilitate early diagnosis and treatment. More than 14,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras have also been launched across the country where medicines are available at an 80 per cent discount — a significant reduction in the cost of treatment for both poor and middle-class families.

Further, emphasising the vision of ‘Swasth Bharat’ (Healthy India) for ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’, the Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD) also introduced the Rashtriya Poshan Mission to enhance the nutritional status of children, pregnant women, lactating mothers, and adolescent girls.

Parallelly, India’s digital health infrastructure has seen remarkable advancements through the Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) initiative — a hassle-free method of accessing and sharing your health records digitally. Till December 22, more than 71.81 crore ABHA numbers have been generated and 46.53 crore health records have been linked with ABHA.

Mission Indradhanush led to the vaccination of 5.46 crore children and 1.32 crore pregnant women. The programme also includes a provision of 11 types of vaccines enhancing protection against preventable diseases. A U-WIN portal was also launched to digitise routine immunisations.

Notably, these efforts led to remarkable improvement in key health indicators, including a reduction in Maternal Mortality Ratio, Infant Mortality Rate, and Total Fertility Rate.

India also got WHO certification for eliminating trachoma — a bacterial eye infection that can cause irreversible blindness. India is the fourth country in Southeast Asia, after Nepal, Myanmar, and Pakistan to achieve the feat.

A shorter and more effective treatment regimen for tuberculosis was also launched under the National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP). It reduced the treatment duration from 9-12 months to 6 months.

Meanwhile, the government has also launched several health projects related to the Ayush sector, with the Ayurveda manufacturing sector seeing an 8-fold growth in the last 10 years. It has led to significant growth in medical tourism resulting in about 123 regular Ayush visas and 221 e-Ayush visas issued to foreigners seeking treatment in India.

Scarlett Johansson reacts to hubby Colin Jost’s dark jokes about her and their baby on ‘SNL’

Los Angeles, Dec 23 (IANS) Comedian Colin Jost may well be in trouble as he may have to do some explaining back home to his wife, Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson after the recent episode of ‘Saturday Night Live’.

On the show’s winter finale on Saturday, Colin Jost and ‘Weekend Update’ co-host Michael Che were forced to read jokes they had never seen before per the show’s biannual tradition, reports ‘People’ magazine.

The prompts are designed to get the comedians in hot water, and this year was no exception, especially when it came to jokes about Scarlett Johansson, 40.

As per ‘People’, the actress, who appeared in the show’s opening monologue, watched the ‘Weekend Update’ segment in real time with a camera trained on her face to capture her reactions as Jost began nervously reading his cue cards.

“Hey boo, y’all know Scarlett just celebrated her 40th birthday”, Jost said, while already looking worried about what was to come next.

He further mentioned, “Which means I’m about to get up out of there. Nah, nah. I’m just playing. We just had a kid together, and y’all ain’t see no pictures of him yet ’cause he Black as hell”.

The camera then cut to Johansson, who shook her head while grimacing. Later in the segment, Jost announced that “Costco has removed their roast beef sandwich from their menu. But I ain’t tripping, I’d be eating roast beef every night since my wife had the kid”, before lowering his face in his hands in apparent horror. Johansson looked shocked, mouthing, “Oh my God”, from backstage.

This isn’t the first time Jost has been forced to poke fun at his relationship for the sake of the show. During the season 49 finale in May, Jost looked at the camera during the Weekend Update segment and said, “ChatGPT has released a new voice assistant feature inspired by Scarlett Johansson’s AI character in Her. Which I’ve never bothered to watch, because without that body, what’s the point of listening”.

The joke was in reference to a high-profile dispute between the actress and OpenAI, which resulted in Johansson threatening legal action against the company.

Woman ends life after harassment by microfinance company employees

Giridih (Jharkhand), Dec 23 (IANS) A woman in Giridih district of Jharkhand allegedly committed suicide on Monday due to continuous harassment by employees of a microfinance company.

The police arrived at the scene after getting the information and recovered the body, which has been sent for post-mortem examination. An investigation into the matter is underway, the police said.

The deceased, identified as Sulekha Devi, was a resident of Bhurai village under the Teesri police station area. Her husband, Amarjeet Sharma, works as a labourer in another state.

Reports say that Sulekha had taken a loan of Rs 50,000 from the microfinance company but was struggling to pay some installments. Company employees reportedly pressured her repeatedly to repay the outstanding amount.

On Monday morning, the company officials visited Sulekha’s house again, demanding immediate payment. Despite her pleas for some more time, the employees allegedly issued threats.

As tensions escalated, villagers gathered outside her home, but the company representatives continued to put pressure on her for immediate payment of dues.

Tragically, Sulekha ended her life by hanging herself inside her home. Villagers rushed to save her, but she had already succumbed by the time they brought her down from the noose.

The company employees fled the scene after the incident.

Local panchayat head Ibrahim Mian informed the police, who recovered the body and sent it to Sadar Hospital for post-mortem.

The police station in-charge said that an investigation is going on and culprits will be brought to book.

This incident highlights a troubling pattern of harassment by microfinance and non-banking financial companies in Jharkhand. Similar cases have been reported in the past as well.

In October last year, Zaibun Khatoon, a resident of Khandoli village in Bengabad police station area, consumed poison after facing harassment from microfinance agents. She succumbed during treatment.

In September last year, a 17-year-old girl from Hara Naukadih village under the Pratappur police station area in Chatra district died after consuming poison. She had reportedly been beaten and harassed by loan recovery agents.

Authorities continue to urge stricter regulations on recovery practices to prevent such tragedies.
