Badruddin Ajmal to contest assembly polls, takes dig at Assam CM​

Guwahati, Feb 23 (IANS) AIUDF chief and former Dhubri MP Badruddin Ajmal on Monday made a series of sharp political remarks, asserting his confidence ahead of the upcoming elections while taking digs at the BJP and the Congress over leadership and alliance dynamics in Assam. ​

Speaking to reporters here, Ajmal said he remains politically resilient despite sustained attacks. ​

“I am a tiger and will remain a tiger. Even if I die, I will die as a tiger,” he said, projecting confidence in his political standing and grassroots support. ​

Targeting Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Ajmal said the BJP leader should not consider himself invincible. ​

“Himanta Biswa Sarma has not yet become a Badshah,” he remarked, adding that no leader can rule Assam politics unchallenged. He claimed the people of the state would deliver an appropriate response in due course. ​

On the question of opposition unity, Ajmal said he remains hopeful of an understanding with the Congress till the last moment.​

“We are hopeful till the final moment. It is the Congress that is talking about divorce; we have not given any divorce,” he said, suggesting that AIUDF has not shut the door on alliance possibilities. ​

Using a colloquial phrase to underline his point, Ajmal said, “Miya biwi razi, to kya karega kazi?”, indicating that if there is mutual willingness between parties, external narratives should not interfere. ​

Referring to the 2021 Assembly elections, Ajmal claimed that opposition infighting had caused significant damage in Upper Assam. ​

“In 2021, Akhil Gogoi and Lurinjyoti Gogoi destroyed the Congress in Upper Assam, and the same will happen again,” he alleged, asserting that fragmented opposition politics continues to benefit the BJP. ​

The AIUDF chief also announced his electoral plans, stating that he would contest from Binnakandi and expressed confidence of victory. ​

“I will contest the election from Binnakandi, and I will win there,” Ajmal said. ​

He further claimed that AIUDF remains a decisive force in Assam’s minority-dominated areas and said the party is fully prepared to face the upcoming political battle, regardless of alliance outcomes.

10 Oppn MPs suspended for ‘disrupting’ Waqf Bill discussion in Parliamentary Committee

New Delhi, Jan 24 (IANS) The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) meeting on the Waqf Amendment Bill on Friday turned chaotic as opposition MPs were suspended for the entire day following a heated argument. It happened during a discussion on the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024.

At the same time, the Opposition MPs alleged that they were not given sufficient time to study the draft which was brought up for discussion.

Chaired by BJP MP Jagadambika Pal, the panel meeting was in fact set to hear a delegation led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq from Kashmir. But before the process, the meeting was disrupted by opposition MPs who raised concerns about “the speed with which the government wanted to pass the bill”, “especially considering the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections”.

As the disruption escalated, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey proposed the suspension of 10 opposition MPs for the day. The panel subsequently accepted Dubey’s proposal.

MPs namely Kalyan Banerjee, Mohammad Javed, A. Raja, Asaduddin Owaisi, Nasir Hussain, Mohibullah, M. Abdullah, Arvind Sawant, Nadimul Haque, and Imran Masood were among the suspended members. Dubey accused the opposition of using unparliamentary language. He alleged that they were trying to suppress the majority’s voice.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who appeared before the committee after the suspension, expressed his strong opposition to the Waqf Amendment Bill, stressing that the government should not intervene in religious matters. Farooq further pointed out they hoped their suggestions would be heard and implemented. The aim should be to ensure that Muslims do not feel marginalised by any proposed changes, he remarked.

Before being suspended, opposition MPs, including Kalyan Banerjee of TMC and Congress member Syed Nasir Hussain, walked out of the meeting. They accused the proceedings of becoming a “farce.” They demanded that the meeting be postponed until January 30 or 31 to allow for a detailed, clause-by-clause discussion.

Banerjee even described the atmosphere as resembling an “undeclared emergency” where the chairman was not listening to anyone.

Dubey meanwhile claimed that the opposition’s behaviour was against parliamentary traditions, and their attempts to disrupt the meeting were an affront to democratic norms.

Arvind Sawant, a Shiv Sena (UBT) MP, flayed the “hasty handling” of such an important Bill, which, according to him, could potentially cause unrest in the country. He asked as to why the Bill was being rushed through the committee process when there should be a proper discussion.

Police in Srinagar attach property worth Rs 1.5 crore under UAPA

Srinagar, July 5 (IANS) Continuing its drive against terrorism, Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Police in Srinagar district on Saturday attached property worth Rs 1.5 crore under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

A police statement said on Saturday, “In a decisive move against the terror ecosystem and to dismantle its supporting infrastructure, Srinagar Police has attached a residential property — comprising 8 marlas and 202 sq. ft. of land along with the building structure— estimated to be worth approximately Rs 1.5 crore.

“The property, located at Mir Masjid Mohalla, Shallabagh Khanyar, and falling under Survey Nos. 3674/1147 and 3677/1148, is recorded in the name of Mohammad Yousuf Shah son of Hafiz Waliuallah Shah.”

The police statement added, “It is currently in the possession of Masood Hussain Shah son of Mohammad Yousuf Shah. The attachment has been carried out under the relevant provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in connection with FIR No. 48/2024 under Sections 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 7/27 of the Indian Arms Act, and Sections 16, 18, 19, 20, and 39 of the UAP Act, registered at Police Station Khanyar.

“Investigations have established that the property was acquired through illegal proceeds linked to terrorist activities. Acting under Section 25 of the UAP Act, the immovable property has been formally seized and attached following due legal procedure.

“Through this attachment notice, the owner is prohibited from selling, leasing, or transferring the said property in any manner. This action is part of the sustained campaign of Srinagar Police to dismantle the terror ecosystem in a systematic manner.

“By targeting and crippling the financial networks of terrorist organisations, Jammu & Kashmir Police aims to curb acts detrimental to the security and integrity of the nation. Srinagar Police reiterates its unwavering commitment to eradicating terrorism and safeguarding public peace.”

Monsoon session of Odisha Assembly to begin today

Bhubaneswar, Sep 18 (IANS) The monsoon session of the Odisha Assembly is set to begin on Thursday, and the Opposition is ready to lock horns with the state government by raising issues concerning farmers’ woes due to the ongoing fertiliser crisis and rising cases of atrocities against women in the state.

The session will commence with obituary references on September 18. On September 19, the House will take up Private Members’ Bills, and from September 20 to 25, five days have been designated as official business days.

Earlier, on September 16, an all-party meeting was held ahead of the upcoming session in which Opposition parties assured support for the smooth functioning of the Assembly.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Deputy Chief Minister K.V. Singh Deo, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mukesh Mahaling, senior BJD leader and party whip in the Assembly, Pramila Mallik, Congress CLP leader Rama Chandra Kadam, along with other leaders, participated in the meeting.

Speaker Padhy appealed for active and constructive participation from all members during the session.

“All parties have assured their cooperation in accordance with legislative norms. We expect meaningful discussions on public issues that could lead to impactful outcomes for the people of Odisha,” she said.

Urging legislators to uphold decorum and discipline, Padhy added, “I expect all MLAs to express their views thoughtfully, maintain the decorum of the House, and contribute positively to the proceedings.”

Speaking to media persons, BJD leader Mallik said the party will give full support for the functioning of the House as per the constitutional provisions.

She also clarified that the Opposition BJD will raise important issues related to the people, including the problems faced by farmers, women, SCs/STs, etc.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mahaling, on the other hand, claimed that the state government is fully prepared to discuss any issue raised by the Opposition — especially those concerning farmers, teachers, students, and women.

He also mentioned that the BJP would highlight the BJD’s 24-year tenure, the previous Congress government’s track record, as well as the achievements of the BJP-led state government in the last 15 months.
