Bengaluru stampede: K’taka govt releases details of deceased; families raise questions

Bengaluru, June 5 (IANS) The Karnataka government on Thursday released the details of the 11 people killed in the stampede near the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) victory celebrations on June 4.

Among the dead, one hailed from Udumalapet near Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, and the rest are from Bengaluru and other districts of the state.

According to the details shared by the Chief Minister’s Office, the deceased have been identified as 14-year-old Divyanshi, a resident of Yelahanka in Bengaluru; 26-year-old Akshata Pai, a resident of Karwar; 19-year-old Bhoomik, a resident of M.S. Ramaiah Layout in Bengaluru; 23-year-old Sahana, a native of Kolar; 19-year-old Chinmaya Shetty, a resident of Doddakallasandra in Bengaluru; 20-year-old Manojkumar, a resident of Nagasandra village in Tumakuru district; 20-year-old Shravana K.T., a resident of Kallahalli village in Chikkaballapura district; 17-year-old Shivu aka Shivalinga, a resident of Honigeri village in Yadgir district; 20-year-old Poornachandra, a resident of Rayasamudra village in Mandya district; 29-year-old Kamakshidevi, a resident of Udumalapet near Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu and 22-year-old Prajwal, a resident of Yelahanka New Town in Bengaluru are the deceased persons.

Laxman, the father of deceased Bhoomik (19), stated he was given information that his son was serious and asked to arrive at the hospital. “My son never watched cricket matches, he had gone along with his friends. I was informed that when the stampede occurred, there was no ambulance, and my son was shifted to the hospital in a police vehicle.”

He further expressed his outrage that he pays the government tax up to Rs 5 lakh per month, and the government wasn’t able to provide an ambulance to my son.

Suresh Babu, the father of deceased Sahana (23), stated his daughter informed him that she is going to attend the RCB victory celebrations at noon. “She had gone to the office in the morning, and later she went to the Chinnaswamy Stadium. “I wanted to see my daughter’s marriage and but now I am garlanding her dead body. She completed her engineering studies and worked at Bosch Company in Bengaluru for two years. She never caused us pain. I had asked her to be careful. The system has failed,” he stated.

The mother of the deceased, Prajwal (22), said she had to run from one hospital to another after being informed about the tragedy. She stated that Prajwal was her only son, and being a labourer, she managed somehow to complete the engineering course. “The government has snatched away my only son. Do they know how it feels to lose a son?” she asked.

The state government has announced Rs 10 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased and also ordered a magisterial probe.

The BJP has said that the deaths were government-sponsored murders and demanded the immediate resignation of Home Minister G. Parameshwara.

Taking cognizance of the stampede incident, the Karnataka High Court on Thursday registered a suo motu Public Interest Litigation (PIL) and sought a report from the Congress-led Karnataka government.

The division bench, headed by acting Chief Justice V. Kameshwar Rao, expressed concern over the tragedy.

Social activist Snehamayi Krishna filed a complaint with the Cubbon Park police on Thursday against Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar, office-bearers of the KSCA, and others. In his complaint, Krishna demanded that the police register the case under Section 106 of the BNS Act.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Tuesday held detailed briefings for three of the seven outgoing delegations. According to sources, Misri laid out India’s position with clarity: “India has been facing cross-border terrorism for over four decades. We have adopted a new normal in countering such activities. There is no room for ambiguity or appeasement.”

Referring to Pakistan’s offer of a joint probe into the recent Pahalgam attack, Misri rejected the idea outright. “Asking Pakistan to co-investigate terror attacks on Indian soil is like asking the thief to investigate his own crimes.”

Each delegation is equipped with classified dossiers and intelligence material, laying out Pakistan’s military and ISI’s role in fostering terrorism, including direct evidence from Operation Sindoor, which recently struck terror launchpads across the Line of Control (LoC).

The MPs, supported by senior Indian diplomats, will engage with foreign governments, parliamentarians, media, civil society, Indian diaspora, and international institutions, including the United Nations. They are expected to provide first-hand accounts and documented proof of Pakistan’s terror infrastructure, including its involvement in supporting groups like LeT, JeM, and sheltering global terror fugitives.

The campaign spans strategic capitals — from Tokyo to Washington, Brussels to Jakarta — and is designed to convey a simple, urgent message: “Terrorism anywhere is a threat to peace everywhere, and India will not stand alone in this fight.”

By involving opposition leaders and regional party MPs alongside ruling party members, the government seeks to reinforce the message that India’s stand against terrorism is bipartisan, national, and non-negotiable.

Operation Sindoor Outreach represents not only India’s diplomatic resolve but a message to the world — that safe havens for terrorists must end, and those enabling them must be held accountable.

International Kite festival kicks off in Gujarat, foreign tourists have a blast

Ahmedabad, Jan 11 (IANS) The International Kite Festival 2025 formally kicked off in the city on Saturday, with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel releasing a tricolour balloon into the sky.

While inaugurating the festival, the Chief Minister emphasised Gujarat’s worldwide reputation in kite manufacturing and also recalled how the kite festival, started during the tenure of Narendra Modi as the CM, went to create an international identity for itself.

The three-day long Kite Festival being held at Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad from January 11 to January 14, saw ambassadors from 11 different countries witnessing the kite flying spectacle.

More than 143 participants from across 47 countries are participating in the event. The festivities will take place at other locations in the state also including the Statue of Unity (Ekta Nagar), Rajkot and Vadodara on January 12, and Surat, Shivrajpur, and Dhordo on January 13.

In his address, the Chief Minister stated how districts like Ahmedabad, Nadiad, Khambhat, and Surat have emerged as prominent hubs for kite production, contributing greatly to India’s kite export business to countries like US, UK and Canada.

The annual festival sees visitors from across the country as well as abroad, making a beeline for the city to experience ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity in kite flying.

A foreign tourist, who visited the city to partake in the Kite Festival said, “I like kites, I design my own kites. I have flown them five times from the rooftops now and I like it a lot.”

“He has done many good things for the country. I think he is one of the best prime ministers in the world,” he further said, sharing his opinion on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

A foreign woman tourist said, “Do I like Gujarat? Yes, of course. I also spent some time in Goa, and it was really beautiful there as well. I really like the food here, though sometimes it’s a bit too spicy, but I do enjoy it – it’s really tasty.”

Telangana CM seeks PM Modi’s appointment for all-party delegation over Backward Class quota

Hyderabad, March 17 (IANS) Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Monday wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking time to meet him along with leaders all political parties on enhancing reservations to Backward Classes (BCs) to 42 per cent in education, employment and elections to rural and urban local bodies.

The Chief Minister sought an appointment to meet the Prime Minister along with leaders of Congress, BJP, AIMIM, and CPI.

This comes hours after the Telangana Assembly unanimously passed two Bills to enhance reservations for BCs.

Telangana Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (reservation of seats in educational institutions and of appointments or posts in services under the State) Bill 2025 and The Telangana Backward Classes (Reservation of seats in Rural and Urban Local Bodies) Bill 2025 were adopted by the Assembly.

As enhancing BC reservations to 42 per cent will breach the 50 per cent Supreme Court ceiling for the overall quota for all sections, the Bills passed by the state Assembly require the Centre’s approval.

The Chief Minister earlier told the Assembly that he would lead an all-party delegation to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Centre’s approval.

He requested Union Ministers G. Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay and BJP floor leader A. Maheshwar Reddy to take the responsibility of seeking an appointment with the Prime Minister.

“Let us also request Rahul Gandhi to raise this issue in Parliament. I am entrusting the responsibility to TPCC President Mahesh Kumar Goud to seek time to meet Rahul Gandhi soon,” he said.

He said it was the responsibility of everyone to adopt the BC Bill in the Parliament. “We will not rest till 42 per cent reservation is achieved for BCs,” he said while reiterating that Congress government is committed to the Kamareddy Declaration.

While announcing its support to the Bills, main opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) once again raised doubts over the data of the recently conducted caste survey in the state.

The Chief Minister assured the House that caste survey was 100 per cent correct. He recalled that Rahul Gandhi had promised that if voted to power, the Congress would enhance Backward Class reservation to 42 per cent. He said soon after coming to power, the Congress initiated the steps for caste survey.

The Chief Minister later took to ‘X’ to declare that Telangana is proud to lead the social revolution in India.

“It is my honour to announce the longest pending demand of the subaltern groups since Indian Independence, the yearning of our brothers & sisters belonging to the Backward Castes, on being counted & recognised in an official census – has finally found deliverance,” he said.

“Today, as the Leader of the Telangana Legislative Assembly, as Chief Minister, I solemnly declare that based on the most scientific, methodically rigorous, and excruciating efforts of our people, we can say that the OBCs population in Telangana is 56.36 per cent,” reads the post.

“We are now resolving to ensure 42 per cent reservations for this Group in all walks of life – education, jobs and employment & political representation. Be on the right side of history & let each one of us become a champion of this historic move,” he added.
