BGT: ‘Respect the first half an hour…’, Gavaskar’s piece of advice for Pant

New Delhi, Dec 24 (IANS) Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has weighed in with key advice for Rishabh Pant ahead of the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, saying that the wicketkeeper-batter has to respect the conditions first and then play his natural game.

Pant’s performances across three Tests have been underwhelming, with the southpaw managing just 96 runs in five innings at an average of 19.20 with the highest score of 37.

“What Rishabh Pant has to do, like everybody else, is respect the first half an hour; respect a little bit when he gets in there, whatever the position—unless, of course, India is 525 for 3; then he can tee off,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

Gavaskar noted that the likes of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Scott Boland have troubled Pant by bowling in areas that challenge his technique. “They get the ball to angle across. Pat Cummins and even Hazlewood give him a little bit of a problem; Scott Boland will give him a little bit of a problem because Boland bowls around that area as well,” he added.

Pant’s legacy in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is already secure after his heroics at The Gabba in the 2020-21 series, where his unbeaten 89 guided India to a historic win. However, the 2024-25 series has been a different story for the dynamic left-hander.

However, former Aussie opener Mathew Hayden feels that Pant should follow his fearless style of play, as it will bring a great opportunity for him and the Team India.

“I have always been a fan of his. He’s kind of a different cheese; there is no doubt about it. And I would like to just see him explore that as well because he should be coming in a situation where, as I mentioned before, there are lots of runs; and if so, that’s a perfect scenario for him to be in, but it’s also the perfect scenario for Team India.

“A little bit like Rohit Sharma, I think we haven’t seen some counter-punching efforts from Rishabh, but he should have no fear in these conditions. I think in the absence of fear comes a great opportunity for Rishabh and Team India,” said Hayden.

The fourth Test, set to begin on Thursday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, is crucial for both teams as they aim to gain the upper hand in the tightly contested five-match series, which is currently levelled at 1-1.

Cummins defends chief selector Bailey amid criticism from Lehmann

New Delhi, Dec 19 (IANS) Australian Test captain Pat Cummins has come to the defence of chief selector George Bailey following pointed criticism from former Australian coach Darren Lehmann, who accused him of being too close to the Test side to make the tough calls.

The underwhelming performances of Australia’s top order have drawn sharp criticism, with Usman Khawaja, Nathan McSweeney, and Marnus Labuschagne averaging a combined 14.40, the lowest figure for Australia’s top three in a home Test summer since 1887/88. Nathan McSweeney, in particular, finds himself under the microscope.

Lehmann took aim at Bailey on Tuesday as the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar series headed for a rain-soaked draw, raising doubts about the former Australian international’s close relationship with the team. “In my opinion, he’s too close to the team. I would like him sitting up watching in a selectors’ box somewhere and be able to make his own decisions. Lehmann had said on ABC Sport.

Cummins, however, was quick to defend Bailey and rejected any suggestion that impacted his decision to make the tough calls.

“I don’t know how that (criticism) can be true. There is so much more to picking a side than just looking at the internet. The most important thing is you do stay objective, and I think the selection panel are amazing at that,” Cummins was quoted by 7News.

“They’ve made some really bold calls over the past couple of years in all formats. Probably bolder than I have seen other selectors make in previous years. They’ve never shied away from a tough decision. What George brings to the role is amazing, and I think you’d hear that not just from the guys on the side, but also from state players as well,” he added.

Despite Cummins’ endorsement, Bailey is likely to face mounting scrutiny if significant changes aren’t made to the Australian squad for the fourth Test in Melbourne.

Dele Alli confirms Everton exit with ‘exciting opportunities’ in sight

New Delhi, Dec 20 (IANS) English midfielder Dele Alli has confirmed that he is set to depart from Everton FC amidst rumours of him joining with former Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas at Como. The 28-year old is expected to train with the Italian side in hopes of developing as a player and securing a contract with the team.

Alli’s contract with the Toffees had ended in June but he stayed and continued training at Goodison Park.

“As widely published this week, 2025 may set me on a new path with some exciting opportunities. Before any of that happens it’s very important for me to make clear how grateful I am of all the fans, staff and players at Everton FC for the support they have given me.

“It’s been an incredibly tough journey trying to put the final pieces together to regain match fitness and I cannot thank the Everton staff enough for the hard work they have put into this process. Unfortunately things haven’t worked out as we all would have hoped and I think it’s the right time for me to turn a new page. I want to wish everyone at this amazing club the very best of luck and hopefully we will see each other again soon,” read the post on Instagram.

At one point, Alli was considered one of the most promising youngsters in the world with his breakthrough coming at Tottenham Hotspur but mental health struggles, which he confirmed in an interview with Gary Neville, and injuries derailed his career.

Although head coach Fabregas declined to comment on Alli’s situation, Como sporting director Carlalberto Ludi confirmed the interest and claimed the Spanish head coach ‘likes him a lot’.

“In ideal conditions, he’s of interest to everyone. We have an excellent relationship with his agent, and something interesting could develop, but we can’t know for sure yet.

“We need a few weeks, including time to get to know each other, and then we’ll make the best decision. A percentage? It’s too early to say. We’ll go through a period of training and mutual understanding, but Fabregas likes him a lot,” said Ludi.
