Bihar: Cough syrup unit shuts in Hajipur after children’s medicine found contaminated

Patna, Jan 20 (IANS) A pharmaceutical company located in the Hajipur industrial area of Vaishali district in Bihar has been shut down following the detection of toxic substances in a children’s cough syrup manufactured at the unit.

The company’s cough syrup had earlier been banned in Telangana and Himachal Pradesh, and its factory gates have now been locked.

Health department sources indicated that further action against the company is likely in the coming days.

According to officials, a sample of the cough syrup manufactured by the company was collected by the Central Drug Inspector in October, and the test report was received recently.

The report revealed the presence of hazardous chemicals, including ethylene glycol, in the syrup.

Following the findings, the Central Drugs Controller imposed a ban on the sale, distribution, and use of the drug.

The medicine was manufactured at an industrial unit located under the jurisdiction of the Industrial Police Station in Hajipur.

The syrup was prescribed to children for allergy-related symptoms such as a runny nose, sneezing, itching, swelling, irritation, and watery eyes.

Health officials warned that ethylene glycol is a highly toxic substance, and its consumption can pose serious health risks, especially to children.

Officials recalled that a few months ago, several children had died in Madhya Pradesh after consuming adulterated cough syrup manufactured in Tamil Nadu, which also contained ethylene glycol.

The quality test report highlighted serious deficiencies in a specific batch of the medicine, Batch No. AL-24002, which was found to contain 1.4876 per cent ethylene glycol.

Experts stated that the presence of this chemical at any level is extremely dangerous for human consumption.

Health department sources said that the medicine from this batch was supplied only to Kishanganj district in Bihar, and that too in limited quantities.

However, after the sample was declared defective, the Central Drugs Control Department directed all states to take action, leading to the nationwide ban.

Sources further said that the company has begun recalling the affected batch of the medicine supplied to various locations.
