Bike-borne miscreants shoot one dead, injure another in Bihar’s Begusarai

Patna, July 14 (IANS) A man was shot dead and another seriously injured after bike-borne assailants opened fire on them in Begusarai district of Bihar on Monday, sparking panic in the area.

The incident occurred near Bagha Gumti under the jurisdiction of the Lohianagar police station. The deceased has been identified as 30-year-old Amit Kumar, son of the late Chhotu Mahato. The injured has been identified as Prince Kumar, who sustained a bullet injury to his back.

According to eyewitnesses, two unidentified men on a motorcycle arrived suddenly and began firing at the victims. Both were immediately taken to Begusarai Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared Amit Kumar dead on arrival. Prince Kumar remains under treatment.

The incident triggered tension in the area. Police reached the scene shortly after and launched an investigation.

“Raids are being conducted to trace the attackers. We are reviewing CCTV footage from the area and are confident of arresting the culprits soon,” said the Station House Officer (SHO) of Lohianagar police station.

Such incidents have raised serious concerns about the deteriorating law and order situation in Bihar, particularly in Patna and adjoining districts.

Just two days earlier, a similar attack occurred in the Samastipur district. On Saturday evening, bike-borne assailants opened fire at a pickup driver near a paan shop in Boria Deeh Ward No 7 under Vibhutipur police station limits, following an argument over giving way on the road.

The victims have been identified as Pankaj Kumar, son of Rajkumar Paswan, who was driving a DJ-loaded pickup van, and Ram Lagan Paswan, son of Rambilas Paswan. Both sustained serious gunshot injuries. In addition, Ram Lagan was reportedly struck on the head with the butt of a pistol during the altercation.

Vibhutipur police responded promptly and began an investigation by recording statements of the injured. However, the attackers remain unidentified, and a manhunt is still going on.

The back-to-back attacks have sparked public outrage and renewed calls for improved policing and tougher action against rising street crime and road rage incidents across the state.

Japan Defence Minister assures full support to India’s fight against terrorism

New Delhi, May 5 (IANS) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday held bilateral talks with his Japanese counterpart General Nakatani in New Delhi, with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to deepening Defence ties and countering regional security threats, including terrorism.

The meeting comes days after a brutal terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s (J&K) Pahalgam claimed 26 innocent lives.

General Nakatani expressed solidarity with India over the Pahalgam attack and extended Japan’s full support.

After the meeting, Defence Minister Singh took to X and posted, “It was a delight to meet Japan’s Defence Minister Gen Nakatani San in New Delhi. India shares a Special Strategic and Global Partnership with Japan. During the bilateral meeting, we discussed Defence cooperation and regional security.”

“Both sides condemned terrorism in all forms and emphasised the need for enhanced collaboration and joint efforts to counter cross-border threats,” he said.

“Nakatani San expressed solidarity with India in the wake of the Pahalgam attack and offered full support to India,” Rajnath Singh added.

The bilateral discussion focussed on regional and international security challenges and explored avenues to bolster cooperation in Defence and strategic affairs.

The meeting marked the second interaction between the two ministers in six months, following their initial talks during the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus in Laos in November 2024.

Earlier in the day, General Nakatani was accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour at Delhi’s Manekshaw Centre.

Singh personally received the Japanese Defence Minister, and both leaders exchanged warm greetings.

The Ministry of Defence underlined that “India and Japan share a long-term friendship, which has gained qualitative momentum since their partnership was elevated to a Special Strategic and Global Partnership in 2014. Defence and security are crucial pillars of this relationship.”

The ministry also highlighted the growing convergence on strategic issues between the two nations, particularly in maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. “Defence exchanges have gained strength due to common outlooks on Indo-Pacific security,” it stated.

The meeting came against the backdrop of rising tensions along the Line of Control (LoC), where Pakistan has been violating the ceasefire for 11 consecutive days.

According to the Indian Army, Pakistani troops fired small arms without provocation during the night of May 4-5 in several areas, including Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajouri, Mendhar, Nowshera, Sunderbani and Akhnoor.

‘Don’t panic, remain vigilant’: Rajasthan BSF IG to public

Jaipur, April 26 (IANS) Inspector General (IG) of Rajasthan Frontier BSF, M.L. Garg, said on Saturday that the public should not panic but remain vigilant in the wake of likely strikes on terror infrastructure in the neighbouring country following the killing of tourists and a civilian in Kashmir’s Pahalgam.

“Our borders are fully secured, and any act of terrorism will be given a befitting reply. The citizens should not panic but remain vigilant at all times. Security measures have been significantly reinforced in the wake of volatile activities across the border,” said IG BSF during his media interaction in Bikaner.

Appealing to the general public, IG Garg cautioned against falling prey to misinformation spread through social media and other channels.

“All security agencies are on high alert and maintaining close coordination at every level. There is no need for panic, but utmost vigilance is essential,” he reiterated.

Highlighting the robust surveillance mechanisms in place, IG Garg revealed that every inch of the border area is being closely monitored using advanced drone technology.

“We are utilising the UAVs extensively to ensure real-time monitoring and immediate response,” he said.

He added that considering the extreme heat conditions, the BSF has set up cool rooms at all Border Outposts (BOPs) to safeguard troops against heat strokes and dehydration.

“Nursing assistants have been specially deployed to ensure immediate medical aid to jawans as the current border temperature has touched 44°C and, according to meteorological predictions, it may rise up to 56°C. Protecting the health of our personnel is a top priority,” said IG BSF.

Further elaborating on BSF’s commitment beyond border security, IG Garg stated that the force is also actively contributing to the development of border villages.

“Our vision is to make border villages beautiful and prosperous. We are consistently engaging with villagers to improve road connectivity, power supply, and generate local employment opportunities,” he said.

He also said that smart fencing work has commenced from the Sri Ganganagar sector and will soon extend across the entire Rajasthan border.

“This will be a game-changer in preventing infiltration and smuggling activities,” he added.

IG Garg visited the Bikaner Sector Headquarters and conducted a thorough review of the security scenario in the border areas.

He also chaired a comprehensive security coordination meeting with Superintendent of Police (SP) Kavendra Sagar, Commandant N.M. Sharma, Deputy Commandant General (DCG) Mahesh Chandra Jat, and officers from intelligence agencies.

DIG Intelligence Vidur Bhardwaj also accompanied IG Garg during the visit.

IG Garg has earlier reviewed security arrangements along the border districts of Jaisalmer and Barmer.

Two juveniles nabbed for cyber fraud in Rajasthan’s Alwar

Jaipur, Feb 22 (IANS) In a crackdown on cyber fraud, the Malakheda police station in Rajasthan’s Alwar district conducted a raid in Dhola Palas village and apprehended two juveniles involved in online scams.

Authorities seized three mobile phones used in the fraudulent activities. SP Sanjeev Nain stated that a dedicated task force, led by Additional Superintendent of Police Dr Tejpal Singh and DSP Traffic Mukesh Chaudhary, has been formed to tackle cyber crimes such as online fraud, sextortion, and scams on platforms like OLX.

As part of this initiative, SHO Hitesh Sharma and his team, using intelligence and technical resources, successfully traced and arrested the two juveniles engaged in cyber fraud. A case has been registered, and further investigations are ongoing.

The juveniles used a deceptive tactic involving fake tax messages. They would send SMS alerts to random individuals, mimicking official bank notifications about funds being credited. Victims were then tricked into returning the money, believing it had been mistakenly deposited into their accounts.

The operation was carried out by SHO Hitesh Sharma, ASI Umardin, Head Constable Sugan Singh, and Constables Suresh Chand and Rinku Ram.

Rajasthan Police earlier in January this year had launched Operation Cyber Shield to tackle cybercrime, focusing on resolving complaints, identifying hotspots, blocking suspicious SIMs, and raising public awareness.

The campaign, spearheaded under the direction of Director General of Police (DGP) Utkal Ranjan Sahu, aimed to crack down on cyber criminals, resolve pending cyber cases, and create public awareness about cyber security.

Looking at the increasing number of cyber crimes, the police continue to take fresh initiatives to check cyber crimes and this Alwar operation was a part of the same initiative, said officials.
