BJP leaders celebrate Holi across states, reiterate commitment to development

New Delhi, March 2 (IANS) Festive fervour marked Holi celebrations at BJP offices across several states on Monday, with senior leaders participating in Holi Milan Samaroh events and extending greetings to party workers and citizens.

In the national Capital, a Holi Milan Samaroh was organised at the Delhi BJP state office, attended by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, MP Manoj Tiwari and Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva, along with several senior party leaders and workers. The gathering saw leaders exchanging ‘gulal’ and festive greetings.

Chief Minister Gupta said she felt proud that the country continues to celebrate festivals peacefully. “I truly feel proud and happy to say that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, our country is able to celebrate its festivals peacefully in our homes. At a time when much of the world is facing unrest, its shadow has not fallen on us,” she said.

Virendra Sachdeva said that people have witnessed the party’s commitment to fulfilling its promises. “People can see that the Bharatiya Janata Party delivers on what it promises. Under the leadership of our Prime Minister, we are accelerating the pace of development in Delhi, and this Holi marks the beginning of adding new colours to that progress,” he said.

In Dehradun, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami participated in Holi celebrations at the BJP office and extended greetings to the people of the state.

“I extend my warm Holi greetings to everyone. Holi is a festival that unites people and strengthens love and bonds among each other,” Dhami said. He added that on the auspicious occasion, the government pledges to work with full commitment for the state’s development, ensuring that progress reaches every individual, even in the farthest corners.

“On this festival of colours, may the hues of happiness and prosperity fill everyone’s life. May our state progress, and may our cultural heritage flourish,” he said.

In Patna, LJP (Ram Vilas) leader and Union Minister Chirag Paswan participated in Holi Milan celebrations and conveyed greetings to the people of Bihar and the nation. He expressed happiness that party leaders, MLAs, MPs and workers had gathered as one family to celebrate the festival.

“May this Holi bring new happiness and new colours of progress into all our lives, making them better and brighter. With the blessings of my leader, my father, respected Ram Vilas Paswan, the colour of today’s Holi for my party is at the level that my father had envisioned,” Paswan said.

He added that not only his family but the entire party family — including MPs, MLAs and senior leaders — had come together to celebrate the festival of colours.

Across states, leaders used the occasion not only to celebrate the festival but also to reiterate their commitment to development and unity, calling for harmony and collective progress.

Unseasonal hailstorms and rain wreak havoc across Bihar

Patna, April 14 (IANS) A severe hailstorm and heavy rain battered several districts of Bihar on Monday evening, severely disrupting normal life and causing extensive damage to standing crops, especially wheat, vegetables, and fruits.

The sudden change in weather has left the state’s farmers distressed and worried about their livelihoods. In Nawada district, especially in the Warasaliganj Assembly constituency, a powerful storm and hail flattened fields of standing crops.

Farmers have reported widespread destruction, calling it a major natural blow just ahead of harvesting season.

“It’s still raining. The storm has destroyed everything. We don’t know how we’ll recover,” a local farmer said.

The continuous rain has also hampered traffic, with vehicles moving at a slow pace due to waterlogged roads and poor visibility.

In Bodh Gaya, hailstones hit the region for nearly 20 minutes, destroying vegetable crops, moong, and wheat.

Local farmer Sudhir Kumar Pandey said that only 40 per cent of wheat had been harvested when the hailstorm hit, with the rest now completely destroyed.

Similarly, Bhojpur district witnessed strong thunder and intense rain that led to daylight darkness.

Large hailstones pounded fields, forcing people to seek shelter and vehicles to turn on headlights during the day.

“This strong wind will prove to be very harmful for the mango harvest too,” said Babun Kumar, a villager of Barhmpur village under Azimabad police station in Bhojpur district.

The farmer noted, concerned about fruit crops being knocked down prematurely. District administrations in Nawada, Gaya, and Bhojpur have asked agriculture officers to conduct immediate surveys of the crop damage.

Farmers have also demanded compensation and aid from the government. The Meteorological Department has issued further alerts for hail and thunderstorms in the coming days and urged farmers to stay away from open fields, citing the risk of lightning.

“Do not stand under trees or electric poles. Stay indoors during heavy rain,” warned meteorologist Roshan Kumar, urging caution and preparedness.

RBI lowers GDP growth forecast to 6.5 pc for 2025-26 as global uncertainties spike

Mumbai, April 9 (IANS) The RBI’s monetary policy committee has reduced its projection for India’s GDP growth in 2025-26 by 20 basis points to 6.5 per cent from 6.7 per cent due to global trade and policy uncertainties in the wake of the US tariff hikes, Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra said on Wednesday.

The RBI Governor said, “First and foremost, uncertainty in itself dampens growth by affecting investment and spending decisions of businesses and households. Second, the dent in global growth due to trade frictions will impede domestic growth. Third, higher tariffs will have a negative impact on net exports.”

“However, there are several known unknowns – the impact of relative tariffs, the elasticities of our export and import demand, and the policy measures adopted by the government, including the proposed Foreign Trade Agreement with the US,” he said.

This makes the exact quantification of the adverse impact difficult, he pointed out.

Taking all these factors into consideration, real GDP growth for 2025-26 is now projected at 6.5 per cent, with Q1 at 6.5 per cent; Q2 at 6.7 per cent; Q3 at 6.6 per cent; and Q4 at 6.3 per cent, the RBI Governor said.

He said that while the risks are evenly balanced around these baseline projections, uncertainties remain high in the wake of the recent spike in global volatility.

India’s real GDP is estimated to grow at 6.5 per cent in 2024-25 on top of a 9.2 per cent growth rate observed in the previous year. In 2025-26, prospects for the agriculture sector remain bright on the back of healthy reservoir levels and robust crop production, Malhotra pointed out.

He said that manufacturing activity was showing signs of revival with business expectations remaining robust, while services sector activity continues to be resilient.

On the demand side, bright prospects of the agriculture sector bode well for rural demand which continues to be healthy, while urban consumption is gradually picking up with an uptick in discretionary spending.

Investment activity has gained traction and it is expected to improve further on the back of sustained higher capacity utilisation, government’s continued thrust on infrastructure spending, healthy balance sheets of banks and corporates, along with the easing of financial conditions. Merchandise exports will be weighed down by global uncertainties, while services exports are expected to remain resilient. Headwinds from global trade disruptions continue to pose downward risks, Malhotra added.

Prime accused in Gorakhpur NEET aspirant murder case arrested in encounter

Lucknow, Sep 17 (IANS) The Gorakhpur police on Wednesday arrested Rahim Khan, the prime accused in the murder of NEET aspirant Deepak Gupta, after an encounter in which he was injured.

Khan was admitted to a hospital for treatment, while a pistol and a motorcycle were recovered from him.

Gupta, a medical aspirant, was allegedly killed by cattle smugglers in Gorakhpur on Monday. Rahim Khan had been named as one of the accused in the case.

Gorakhpur SSP Raj Karan Nayyar said four accused have been arrested so far, while two others are still absconding.

He said Khan opened fire when cornered by the police team, forcing them to retaliate, which led to his injury. Two other accused, Chhotu and Raju, are being interrogated.

Nayyar added that police have announced a reward for the absconding accused, whose identities have been confirmed, and five dedicated teams are conducting raids to nab them.

The victim’s family members had held a protest against the killing and asked for justice.

Reacting to the encounter, Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav launched a sharp attack on the government, questioning its law and order record.

“Before 2022, a businessman from Kanpur died in police custody, and now a young student preparing to become a doctor has been killed in Gorakhpur. What was the police doing in the Chief Minister’s home district despite such a huge cattle smuggling incident? Why was an encounter necessary?” he asked.

Calling the encounter “pre-planned”, Akhilesh Yadav alleged: “When a senior officer went to Gorakhpur, it was decided then. It didn’t happen that night, but the encounter took place while our press conference was underway.”

The SP chief asserted that “encounters won’t improve law and order; they will improve only by giving opportunities to good officers, not by assigning police stations on the basis of caste”. He accused the government of using encounters to “hide its failures” and alleged that those involved in cow slaughter were linked to the BJP, with the administration “complicit in the Gorakhpur incident”.
