BJP MLA Munirathna booked in gangrape case

Bengaluru, May 21 (IANS) Karnataka Police have registered an FIR against BJP MLA N. Munirathna, who represents the RR Nagar Assembly constituency in Bengaluru, on the charges of orchestrating the gangrape of a party worker.

The RMC Yard police filed the FIR in Bengaluru based on a complaint of the 40-year-old victim.

In addition to MLA Munirathna, the FIR names his associates Vasantha, Channakeshava, Kamal and an unidentified individual as co-accused in the case.

According to the FIR, the police recorded the victim’s statement at the hospital in Bengaluru, where she is currently undergoing treatment.

The victim alleged that in 2013, Munirathna accused her of prostitution and got her jailed out of personal vengeance.

Upon her release, she claimed the MLA again targeted her by having his associates implicate her in a murder case, resulting in another imprisonment.

She was granted bail and released within a month.

On June 11, 2023, at around 7 p.m., the second and fourth accused allegedly visited the victim’s home, promising that the pending cases against her would be withdrawn if she accompanied them to Munirathna’s office.

The complainant alleged that at Munirathna’s office, she was sexually assaulted.

The FIR read: “The MLA got her raped by the first, second, and third accused. Later, Munirathna urinated on her face and injected her with a substance, telling her that she would suffer for the rest of her life.”

The FIR adds that the MLA warned her not to reveal details of the incident and directed his associates to drop her back home.

On January 14, 2025, the victim began experiencing severe abdominal pain. Following a blood test, doctors informed her that she had contracted a virus. This diagnosis was confirmed at Victoria Hospital.

Subsequent medical consultations revealed that she was suffering from an incurable disease, according to the FIR.

Unable to endure the pain, the victim allegedly consumed sleeping pills on the night of May 19. A neighbour found her and admitted her to the hospital.

The police have registered the FIR under IPC Sections 376D (gang rape), 270 (malignant act likely to spread infection), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 354 (assault or criminal force to outrage modesty), 504 (intentional insult), 506 (criminal intimidation), 509 (insulting the modesty of a woman), and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention).

Maoist movement will be completely eradicated: Siddaramaiah

Mysuru, Jan 11 (IANS) Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said that eradicating the Maoist movement is the objective of the Congress-led state government, adding that all protests must be peaceful and should not adopt violent means which is also his government’s stance.

Siddaramaiah on Wednesday welcomed the surrendered Maoists into the mainstream by offering them roses and copies of the Indian Constitution at his home office, ‘Krishna’, in Bengaluru.

With the surrender of six Maoists, the Congress-led government has declared Karnataka a Left-Wing Extremism (LWE)-free state.

Speaking to the media at Mysuru Airport on Friday, the Chief Minister addressed the concerns and debates surrounding the surrender of Maoists and the seizure of their weapons.

Siddaramaiah also assured that measures are being taken to confiscate the surrendered Maoists’ firearms.

He emphasised that protests should adhere to constitutional methods as even B.R. Ambedkar advocated and no one is permitted to take the law into their own hands.

Regarding reports of another Maoists’ presence in Karnataka’s Sringeri, the Chief Minister clarified that there is no concrete information.

However, he urged any such individuals must surrender before the law and integrate into the mainstream.

CM Siddaramaiah said that the Congress government does not need to prove its commitment to B.R. Ambedkar.

The government is dedicated to safeguarding the Constitution and upholding its principles, he added.

Reacting to senior BJP leader and Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement advising against chanting Ambedkar’s name while simultaneously visiting Dalit homes as part of a campaign, CM Siddaramaiah said this shows BJP’s lack of respect for Ambedkar.

He reminded that the Constitution was drafted during the Congress’ rule, with Ambedkar at the helm of affairs.

He further alleged that during former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government, the BJP had considered amending the Constitution and that many of its party leaders as well as RSS members have historically opposed it.

Addressing the ongoing farmers’ protests in Delhi, demanding a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price, CM Siddaramaiah criticised the Central government for being insensitive to farmers’ demands.

Despite hundreds of farmers losing their lives during the protests, the BJP-led Central government has shown no inclination to meet their legitimate demands, the Chief Minister said.

Siddaramaiah called the Central government “anti-farmer” and “inhumane”.

Speaking on the ASHA workers’ strike, the Chief Minister said that meetings were held with their representatives.

Previously, ASHA workers received a monthly honorarium of Rs 8,000, but the state government has now decided to raise it to Rs 10,000, including incentives. This has led to the strike being called off, he said, adding that the state’s financial position is stable enough to support this decision.

A Cabinet meeting will be held at the Hindu pilgrimage centre, Male Mahadeshwara Hill in Chamarajanagar on February 15, focusing on resolving local issues in the region, Siddaramaiah said.

He dismissed any concerns or confusion regarding this meeting.

Reacting to discussions about naming a road in Mysuru as “Siddaramaiah Aarogya Marg”, the Chief Minister clarified that he has never requested anything to be named after him in his 45-year political career.

He also recalled rejecting an honorary doctorate offered by the Mysore University in the past.

EPFO to process all cases for pensions on higher wages by March 31

New Delhi, Feb 26 (IANS) The Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has completed the processing of 70 per cent of applications received under Pension on Higher Wages (PoHW) and aims to complete the processing of all applications by March 31, 2025, according to an official statement issued on Wednesday.

This information was provided by the EPFO at the Executive Committee (EC) of the Central Board of Trustees, EPF, chaired by Labour and Employment Secretary Sumita Dawra.

The executive committee instructed the EPFO to expedite the cases of members who have already deposited the required amount, including for the large PSUs, according to the statement. The higher wages pension scheme is being implemented in accordance with the Supreme Court judgment on the issue.

With the goal of providing ease of living for its members, the EPFO is also working on a plan for simplification of claim processing, including rationalisation of validations for partial withdrawals. The EC was also provided an update on the progress. A technical committee has recommended simplification of validations in Form 31 for advance withdrawals, the statement said.

The EC, at the meeting, formally adopted the Unified Pension Scheme for EPFO officers and staff, aligning with the recent gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Finance. This marks a significant step toward establishing a structured and assured pension framework for EPFO employees covered under the National Pension System (NPS), the statement said.

Effective from April 1, 2025, the UPS ensures financial security post-retirement, offering a minimum guaranteed pension along with additional benefits such as family pension provisions and dearness relief adjustments. EPFO officers and staff will now have the option to transition from the NPS to the UPS.

The executive committee was further informed that the Centralised Pension Payment System (CPPS) has been implemented across all regional offices in January 2025. The new system enables pensioners to access their pensions seamlessly from any bank, any branch, anywhere in the country. In January 2025, 69.4 lakh pensioners received their pensions through CPPS, achieving a 99.9 per cent success rate.

The EC emphasised the need to transition to the Aadhaar-Based Payment System (ABPS) in a time-bound manner, ensuring that pension payments are credited directly into Aadhaar-linked bank accounts for a more secure and efficient system.

The EC also reviewed progress under CITES 2.01, whereby the EPFO is transitioning from decentralised databases to a centralised system, laying the foundation for enhanced performance. This modernisation effort, set for completion by March 31, 2025, aims to streamline claims settlement and payments, replacing the ageing Field Office Application Software to enhance efficiency and service delivery.

Additionally, the EPFO updated EC on a plan under EPFO 3.0, an exercise to transform itself into a future-ready, member-centric, and technology-driven organisation.

Basavaraju, a ruthless Maoist from Andhra Pradesh

Amaravati, May 21 (IANS) Nambala Keshav Rao, India’s topmost Maoist leader, gunned down by security forces in Chhattisgarh on Wednesday, was considered a ruthless revolutionary and a master military strategist who led some of the most brutal attacks in the history of the Maoist movement in the country.

Popularly known as Basavaraju, he was the obvious choice to lead CPI (Maoist) when Muppala Lakshman Rao or Ganapathy stepped down as the general secretary in 2018.

Regarded as an expert in IEDs, Basavaraju hailed from the Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh. He had led many brutal attacks, including the 2010 attack at Chintalnar in Chhattisgarh, killing 76 CRPF personnel.

With a B.Tech degree from the National Institute of Technology, Warangal (earlier known as Regional Engineering College), he was known to be one of the highly educated Maoists.

Basavarju, who was around 70, spent 43 years in the Maoist movement to which he was attracted in the 1980s while studying M.Tech.

He was the Commander in Chief of the Central Military Commission (CMC) of the Maoists and carried a reward of Rs 2.02 crore on his head.

He also headed the forest division of the Dandakaranya in the past and was a member of the CPI (Maoist) Politburo, the ideological think tank of the banned outfit.

The Maoist leader was believed to be responsible for all major attacks on security forces over the last 15 years.

He was also considered to be the brain behind the Claymore mine attack on Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu at Alipiri in Tirupati in 2003. Naidu, then Chief Minister of united Andhra Pradesh, was injured in the attack.

The guerrilla leader, who was also a member of the Standing Committee and Central Committee of CPI (Maoist), was considered a hardliner in following party ideology when compared to his predecessor, Ganapathy.

Ganapathy, who was the first general secretary after the CPI-ML People’s War and Maoist Communist Centre (MCC) merged in 2004 to form the CPI (Maoist), is believed to have fled India.

Basavaraju was known by many aliases, including Vinay, Ganganna, Prakash, BR, Umesh and Keshav.

He was born in Jiyannapeta of Kotabommili mandal in Srikakulam district in 1955. His father, Vasudev Rao, was a teacher, and he had a brother and three sisters.

After primary education in the village, he went to high school in his grandfather’s village, Talagam and completed intermediate from Junio College at Tekkali. During his college days, he was a kabbadi player.

While studying B.Tech from the Regional Engineering College (REC) Warangal, he was attracted by the Radical Students’ Union. In 1984, while doing his M. Tech, he was impressed by CPI (ML) People’s War’s ideology. He discontinued M. Tech to join the movement. After joining the Naxalbari movement, he never visited his village.

Basavaraju was considered a key strategist in carrying out military attacks. He headed the Central Military Commission for a decade.

He was also believed to have hatched the plot to attack Salwa Judum founder Mahendra Karma in 2013. Mahendra Karma and 27 others were killed in this attack.

He was also the brain behind the killing of Telugu Desam Party’s Araku MLA Kidari Sarveswara Rao and former MLA Siveri Soma on September 23, 2018.
