BJP slams Cong, says ‘rioters’-friendly govt existing in Karnataka

Bengaluru, March 19 (IANS) The Karnataka BJP unit on Wednesday targeted the Congress-led government for creating a helpless situation for the police officers in the state.

The BJP also charged that the government is not a ‘police-friendly government’ but a rioters’-friendly government existing in the state.

BJP MLA and State BJP General Secretary, V. Sunil Kumar, made the statement in the Assembly while making a statement under the provision of ‘Rule 69’.

“The series of incidents in the state raise the question on whether the Home Department is working in the state or it’s dysfunctional. Is the State Home Minister able to comprehend what’s going on in the state? Is police inefficient? Have criminal elements able to gain upper hand over the police in the state or they colluded with each other?” asked MLA Sunil Kumar.

“In the Udayagiri police station attack case reported from Mysuru city for an objectionable post, the police delayed arrests.

The police vehicles were pelted with stones, the rioters tried to torch fire and displayed extreme behaviour. If the incidents of DJ Halli-KG Halli and Hubballi police station attack cases are considered, the reason was a social media post hurting the religious sentiment of one religion. If Hindus take such developments seriously, there will be similar incidents every day in the state as Hindu gods are targeted often,” the BJP leader said.

“It is clear that one group in the society is crossing the limits and the state government has turned a blind eye. Strict actions are initiated in other states when crimes are committed against women and society. In Karnataka, police are attacked and they are made helpless.”

“The state government is in friendly terms with criminals and rioters. The hands of police are tied against criminals. The state is not police-friendly, its rioters’-friendly. This is happening for the first time in the state,” Sunil Kumar said, while criticising the Congress government in the state.

“If police is attacked, the government does not give them free hand to deal with the situation, what about the morale of the police department under these circumstances? If Hindus come together in thousands there will not be any law and order issues, if Muslims come out in thousands there will be violence,” he added.

“Whether the police in the state have turned criminal friendly? The government has washed away its hands in the Israel Tourist gang rape case? The incident had taken place at the UNESCO heritage site — Hampi, an international destination. The state has lost its dignity and honour in the case. How could the state fail to provide security to foreign tourists at this location? This is suspicious,” Sunil Kumar said, while criticising the Congress government.

“The state government labelled the accused person in the case of slashing of udders of cow as mad and sidelined the case in two days. The hopes that the government will consider the sentiments of Hindus who worship cows were dashed,” the BJP leader added.

“The online fraud has reached villages in the state. The Police department has completely failed. There are cases such as a student who used his fee for online investment, lost money and ended his life. In another case, the money reserved for a job was used and resulting in that person ending his life. The government needs to consider it as a social menace and take up effective action,” he said.

State Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister, Priyank Kharge, objected to the allegations levelled against the Congress government and said that the BJP leaders are always talking about Hindu-Muslim issues.

“How can you make allegations on the government? What happened to Hindu activist Paresh Mesta case? The case was given to the CBI and the investigations ruled out foul play in his death case?” Kharge asked.

MLA Sunil Kumar also said that in the capital city Bengaluru, the anti-social elements are roaming on bike flashing swords and other weapons.

“Don’t they (criminals) have fear of police? The state government should not protect the criminals and peace should be restored,” he added.

Punjab Police arrest juvenile among two of ISI-backed terror module

Chandigarh, Dec 13 (IANS) Punjab Police on Friday claimed to have disrupted Pakistan’s ISI-backed terror module being operated by Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) operative Harvinder Rinda and Harpreet Singh with the arrest of two members, who confessed to having placed an improvised explosive device (IED) at a police station in Ajnala, said Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav.

Those arrested have been identified as Jashandeep Singh, a resident of Amritsar, a 17-year-old juvenile. Police teams have also recovered two Chinese-made P86 hand grenades and one sophisticated Turkey-made 9MM Zigana pistol along with ammunition from their possession.

The development came less than three weeks after the recovery of an IED planted close to the Police Station on November 23, 2024. Pertinently, the terrorist organisation BKI used social media platforms to claim responsibility for the terror act.

DGP Yadav said preliminary investigations have revealed that accused Jashandeep Singh Danny and the other arrested accused were in touch with Gurdev Jaisal, who allured them to work for him in lieu of money and drugs. Apart from planning terror activities, Jaisal also used them for drug peddling, he added.

He said both the accused confessed to having placed an IED at the police station following directions of their handlers and also revealed that they had received various consignments of weapons and explosives.

The DGP said further investigations are being conducted to unearth the entire network of Rinda, Happy Passia and Jaisal. Efforts are being made to identify and apprehend other members of this group to bring the case to a logical end, he added.

Sharing operation details, Assistant Inspector General (State Special Operation Cell) Sukhminder Singh Mann said they have received a tip-off that Rinda, Passia and Jaisal have mobilised their associates to carry out anti-national activities in Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Batala areas and also arranged huge consignment of weapons and explosives for them to execute the plans of targeting government establishments.

Acting swiftly, the teams launched an intel-based operation and arrested accused Jashandeep Danny and his juvenile accomplice from the Amritsar area after recovering arms and explosives from their possession, he added.

Gang rape of Israeli tourist & homestay owner: K’taka govt committed to ensuring safety, says CM Siddaramaiah

Bengaluru, March 8 (IANS) Describing the gang rape of an Israeli tourist and a local homestay owner as a heinous act, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that the Congress-led Karnataka government is committed to ensuring the safety of tourists.

Taking to social media X, CM Siddaramaiah stated, “The incident of assault and rape on an Israeli citizen and a homestay owner in Sanapur, Gangavati taluk, Koppal district, is a highly heinous act.”

“As soon as the incident was reported, I gathered information from the concerned police officials and directed them to conduct a strict investigation and swiftly apprehend the culprits. In connection with the case, the police have arrested two accused individuals and are continuing their investigation,” the CM said.

“Our government is committed to ensuring the safety of every individual, including tourists visiting the state. All necessary measures will be taken to prevent such incidents from recurring,” CM Siddaramaiah underlined.

Koppal SP Ram L Arasiddi stated in his latest statement on Saturday, “On the midnight of March 6 between 11 p.m. and 12 midnight, five citizens, two foreigners and three from India – of them three were men who were assaulted physically and two were women, who were assaulted sexually. Three men fell into the canal, two survived while the body of one, identified as Bebaas, was found today at the canal.”

“Based on the complaint given by the victim, an FIR was registered at the Gangavati Rural police station. Based on the information we had and local information, we arrested two persons today. One of them is Mallesha aka Handi Mallu and the other person is Chetan Sai, both belong to Sai Nagar in the Gangavathi town station,” he stated.

“The accused will be further interrogated and produced to the court. All procedures will be followed. If required, we will again take them for police custody,” the SP said.

“Regarding all four victims, they have been subjected to medical examination. Necessary treatment has been given to them. One more accused needs to be arrested. We have formed our teams and very soon he will also be arrested,” SP stated.

The incident took place on Thursday night when the homestay owner had taken female tourists from Israel, and the US, a male tourist from Odisha and the deceased to the banks of Tungabhadra Left Bank Canal near Sanapura village near Gangavathi town for stargazing.

When the tourists were stargazing on the banks of the Tungabhadra canal, the accused who came to the spot on a bike, approached them on the pretext of asking for petrol and started demanding money from them.

On refusal of money, they attacked the group with stones, pushed the others into the canal, and raped the women.

The 29-year-old homestay owner, one of the victims of the sexual assault, has filed a complaint with the police regarding the incident.

The preliminary investigations revealed that the accused approached the victims on the pretext of asking for money for petrol. The victims gave them Rs 20 and asked them to leave. However, the accused started an argument with them asking for Rs 100 and started assaulting them.

They attacked the tourists and locals, a group of five persons, with stones and hands. They had pushed three men into the canal and sexually assaulted two women, a female from Israel and a local homestay owner.

Two of the accused gang-raped the local homestay owner, while the Israeli national was raped by one of the accused, sources stated. More details are yet to emerge regarding the exact sequence of events and the nature of sexual assault.

The victims were not known to each other and became friends after their arrival at the homestay.

As cold wave intensifies, Kashmir awaits major snowfall

Srinagar, Jan 5 (IANS) Minimum temperature remained notches below the freezing point in Kashmir on Sunday as the Meteorological (MeT) office forecasted widespread snowfall and rain in J&K.

The MeT office statement said, “Between January 5 and 6, generally cloudy with light to moderate rain (plains of Jammu)/snow at most places of J&K with peak activity during 5th (late Night)/6th morning; improvement from 6th afternoon. From January 7 to 10, generally cloudy with dry weather. On January 11 to 12, generally cloudy with light snow at isolated to scattered places. On January 13 to 15: generally dry.”

The department issued an advisory, which said that there was a possibility of heavy snow over the middle and higher reaches of Kashmir; Chenab Valley during the January 5th late night/6th morning.

“Temporary disruption of Surface and Air transportation particularly on 5th January. Tourists/travellers/Transporters are advised to plan accordingly; follow Admin/Traffic advisory,” the advisory mentioned.

Srinagar had minus 2.5 degrees Celsius, Gulmarg minus 4 degrees and Pahalgam minus 3.2 as the minimum temperature.

Jammu city had 9.7 degrees, Katra town 9, Batote 6.3, Banihal 3 and Bhaderwah 3.3 as the night’s lowest temperature.

Due to fog which caused very Low visibility, all flights to Srinagar airport were delayed. No flight landed till noon.

The 40-day-long period of extreme winter cold, locally called the ‘Chillai Kalan’, started on December 21 and will end on January 30.

Most water bodies, including lakes, streams, springs and ponds, have frozen partially in the Valley.

Doctors have advised people to avoid long exposure to colds that can result in hypothermia. Myocardial infarction caused by hypothermia can result in heart attack or heart failure. People of high-risk age groups, especially children and elders, have been asked to remain cautious about exposure to extreme cold temperatures.

Locals traditionally wear the loose tweed overgarment called the ‘Pheran’ underneath which they hold an earthen firepot filled with charcoal. The firepot is woven in a basket of willow wicker and is called the ‘Kangri’. This is the best bet for Kashmiris to ward off the winter cold.
