BJP will move SC against Bengal Speaker on MLA defection issue: Suvendu Adhikari

Kolkata, March 11 (IANS) Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari said on Tuesday that the BJP would approach the Supreme Court on the MLA defection issue and even make the state Assembly Speaker Biman Bandopadhyay a party in the matter.

His remarks come a day after the BJP legislator from the Haldia Assembly constituency in West Bengal, Tapasi Mondal, joined Trinamool Congress but retained her tag of ‘BJP legislator’.

Speaking to the media outside the Assembly premises, Adhikari said that the Speaker does not honour the Indian Constitution.

“Since 2011, Trinamool Congress has taken at least 56 defecting legislators into its fold. They were from all parties including BJP, Congress, CPI(M), Revolutionary Socialist Party, and the Forward Block. The Speaker has no regard towards the 10th Schedule of the Indian Constitution that deals with the ‘anti-defection’ law,” the Leader of the Opposition said.

He also accused the Speaker of illegally allowing two Trinamool Congress namely Sayantika Banerjee from Baranagar constituency in North 24 Parganas districts and Reyat Houssen Sarkar from Bhagabangola constituency in Murshidabad district to participate in Assembly proceedings violating the order of the West Bengal Governor C. V. Ananda Bose.

“Recently, a case has been filed at the Apex Court on the similar defection of 10 legislators at Telangana. The next date for a hearing in the matter at the Apex Court is March 25. After that, BJP will also move the Supreme Court on the issue of MLA defection in West Bengal and the Speaker will be made a party there,” the Leader of the Opposition said.

At the same time, Adhikari said that in the coming days, there would be massive protest demonstrations by the BJP within the Speaker’s constituency of Baruipur in South 24 Parganas district.

Speaking on the occasion, Adhikari also said that during the last few days, there had been orchestrated attacks on the religious and business establishments of the Hindus in different pockets of the state.

“The police had remained silent spectators in all such cases and not a single arrest had been made in this connection,” Adhikari added.

Soldier injured in Sopore encounter in J&K

Srinagar, Jan 20 (IANS) A soldier was injured on Monday in fresh firing between the joint security forces and the terrorists on the second day of an anti-terror operation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Sopore sub-division.

Officials said that the soldier was injured as firing resumed during the encounter between terrorists and security forces in the Gujjarpati area of Zaloora in the Sopore sub-division.

“Operation was started in the area yesterday following information about the presence of terrorists in there. The operation was suspended yesterday as the vigil was tightened to plug the escape routes of the hiding terrorists. With the first light today, fresh firing resumed. In the ensuing encounter a soldier has been injured,” officials said.

The injured soldier has been shifted to a hospital for treatment, the officials added.

On Sunday, joint teams of the army, Jammu and Kashmir police and the CRPF cordoned off the Gujjarpati area during which a hideout was busted.

During the searches, the security forces were fired upon triggering an encounter. Officials said that the operation was going on and further details are awaited.

It must be mentioned that the security forces have carried out aggressive operations against terrorists, their over-ground workers (OGWs) and sympathisers.

The Lt Governor, Manoj Sinha ordered the hot pursuit of terrorists after they carried out some dastardly attacks after the peaceful, people-participative Lok Sabha and Legislative Assembly elections.

Intelligence agencies suggest that the handlers of terrorists sitting across the border in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) have been frustrated by the huge participation in these elections by the people. Intelligence agencies suggest that the handlers of terrorism have directed terrorists to carry out attacks against the army, security forces, police and civilians to show their presence in order to instil fear in the minds of the common peace-loving citizens of the union territory.

GIS will boost investment in MP’s mining sector: Mohan Yadav

Bhopal, Feb 25 (IANS) Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Tuesday said that Madhya Pradesh will gain its biggest boost in the investment sector from mining at the Global Investors Summit (GIS) 2025.

He emphasised the vast investment opportunities in the mining sector while addressing the mining session of the GIS which concluded at the Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya in Bhopal on Tuesday.

During his address, CM Yadav highlighted that Madhya Pradesh is the only state where diamonds can be found ‘just like a stone can be spotted’.

He set a target of increasing mineral revenue five-fold and expressed confidence that the GIS in Bhopal will set new records in investment.

He pointed out that the state has vast mineral reserves, including diamonds, limestone, dolomite, cement, copper, manganese, and rock phosphate in abundance.

The Chief Minister further stated that the state has developed a simple and flexible mining policy through coordination among all departments, making it easier for investors to invest in Madhya Pradesh.

He assured investors in the mining sector of full support and stated that the state government is working on policy development in collaboration with the government of India.

“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Madhya Pradesh will play a crucial role in the country’s mineral sector. A separate summit will be organised for mining sector in coming days,” the Chief Minister added.

Meanwhile, Principal Secretary of Minerals, Umakant Umrao said that all regions of Madhya Pradesh have vast mineral reserves, supported by an excellent ecosystem for optimal utilisation.

“Madhya Pradesh leads in copper, manganese, and diamond production, ranks second in rock phosphate, third in limestone, and fourth in coal production. Furthermore, 36 per cent of the country’s coal-bed methane reserves are in Madhya Pradesh,” he added.

Notably, the two-day summit that was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bhopal on Monday, concluded with an address by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday.

Rival leaders joining BJP shows AAP’s end certain: Delhi BJP chief Sachdeva

New Delhi, Jan 20 (IANS) As Assembly elections draw close, leaders from the AAP and the Congress are joining the BJP in large numbers with Delhi unit chief Virendra Sachdeva on Monday calling the trend an indication of the ruling party’s endgame.

On Monday, Rinku Mittal who was an AAP candidate from Kotla MCD ward in Kasturba Nagar Assembly during the 2022 elections, along with her husband, social worker Sunil Mittal, officially joined the BJP with their supporters. They also announced their support for BJP candidate Neeraj Basoya.

Additionally, key Congress workers from the Adarsh Nagar Assembly constituency joined the BJP to support party candidate Raj Kumar Bhatia.

Former Bar Association President of Adarsh Nagar Assembly S.C. Dixit, along with Ajay Sharma and hundreds of other workers, embraced the BJP’s ideology. State Spokesperson and member of BJP’s Joining Committee, Nitin Tyagi, was present on this occasion.

Welcoming leaders from AAP and Congress with ceremonial scarves, Sachdeva said that AAP National Convenor and former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal is completely engulfed in corruption, and the Congress is fighting for its existence.

“Therefore, Delhi’s citizens will reject both these parties,” he said, adding that after the double-engine government comes to power in Delhi, the development vehicle will accelerate at full speed.

Sachdeva also said that Kejriwal has not carried out any development work in Delhi and he knows his defeat is confirmed.

“He is neither reaching out to the public nor running an effective election campaign. His campaigns are now entirely dependent on press conferences,” Sachdeva said.

He emphasised that Delhi voters are questioning AAP candidates over high electricity bills, broken roads, contaminated water, and other basic issues, which Arvind Kejriwal had promised to address but failed to fulfil.

Sachdeva also hit out at AAP leader Sanjay Singh for questioning the development works carried out in Delhi by the Central government.

“If Sanjay Singh had taken time off from indulging in political conspiracies, spreading misinformation, and dealing with liquor contractors, he would have seen the development accomplished by the Central government,” said Sachdeva.

“I challenge Sanjay Singh to debate with any of our state spokespersons on the developmental works done by the Narendra Modi government in Delhi,” he said.
