Boost for ‘Make in India, Make for World’ vision as GRSE lays keel of first export MPV for Germany

Kolkata, Oct 16 (IANS) In a step that aligns with the government’s “Make in India, Make For the World” initiative, defence shipyard Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd laid the keel for the first vessel of Multipurpose Vessel (MPV) project being executed by it for Germany’s Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler and Reederei GmbH & Co. KG in Kolkata on Thursday.

This project marks GRSE’s first major export order for MPVs, highlighting the shipyard’s expanding footprint in the global commercial shipbuilding market.

Cdr Shantanu Bose, IN (Retd), director (shipbuilding), GRSE, was present at the occasion where Jonas Meinhard, managing director of Carsten Rehder, was the chief guest.

“This milestone marks the beginning of a significant collaboration, combining innovation, precision, and craftsmanship to deliver a modern series of high-performance Multi Purpose Vessels under the CORAL 7500 DWT MPV series, a collaborative project between GRSE and Carsten Rehder, Germany,” GRSE said in a statement.

The initial contract for four vessels was signed on June 22, 2024, followed by subsequent agreements bringing the total order to twelve vessels. The final contracts, including for the ninth to twelfth vessels, were signed on September 19, 2025.

Each MPV is designed with an overall length of 120 metres and a beam of 17 metres, with a draught of 5.85 metres.

With a capacity to carry 7,500 metric tonnes of cargo, these vessels are equipped with a single, large cargo hold designed for bulk, general and project cargoes.

An innovative feature is the capability to carry containers on hatch covers and multiple large windmill blades on deck – enhancing flexibility in cargo handling.

The project is being developed in close collaboration with German firms, including F.H. Bertling, ForestWave Navigation/Schulte & Bruns, and Delft Shipping. Technical design expertise has been provided by M/s SEDS, in partnership with GRSE, and these ships shall be certified by the classification society DNV.

The golden jubilee celebrations will include a tribute to the cooperative movement, highlighting IFFCO’s journey in supporting Indian farmers and ensuring food security.

As part of the celebrations, Union Minister Shah will interact with IFFCO officials, cooperative representatives, and farmers to discuss the future of agriculture and the role of cooperatives in enhancing farm productivity.

A key highlight of his visit will be the inauguration of a state-of-the-art Seed Research Center at the IFFCO Kalol facility. This centre aims to develop high-yield and climate-resilient seeds to help farmers increase their productivity and adopt modern farming practices. It will focus on advanced agricultural research, innovation in seed technology, and sustainable farming techniques.

Cooperation Minister Shah’s visit to Gujarat holds political and economic significance as it comes at a time when the government is emphasising self-reliance in agriculture through initiatives like cooperative-based farming and technological advancements.

The newly inaugurated research centre aligns with the government’s vision of improving agricultural sustainability and reducing dependency on imported seeds.

The event will also be attended by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, IFFCO Chairman Dilip Sanghani, and top officials from the cooperative and agricultural sectors.

Farmers from various parts of Gujarat are expected to participate in the celebration, making it a key platform for dialogue on the future of cooperative farming in India.

Union Home Minister Shah has made several visits to Gujarat this year, engaging in a variety of religious, social, and developmental activities across the state.

On March 8 and 9, he embarked on a two-day tour encompassing Junagadh, Gir Somnath, Ahmedabad, and Gandhinagar.

His itinerary included prayers at the Somnath Temple, participation in the restoration of sugar mills in Talala and Kodinar, and the inauguration of projects at Brahmanand Vidyadham in Junagadh.

Additionally, he unveiled a Rs 150 commemorative coin honouring Jainacharya Buddhisagar Surishwar Maharaj’s birth anniversary and attended the Swarnim Shatabdi Mahotsav of Ahmedabad District Bank.

In January, he visited Gujarat twice within a short span. On January 13, he participated in Makar Sankranti festivities, flying kites and engaging with the local community.

On January 16, he traveled to Vadnagar in Mehsana district to inaugurate several projects, including the Vadnagar Archaeological Experiential Museum, which showcases the town’s 2,500-year history, a sports complex, and other local initiatives.

He also addressed a gathering at Science College and visited the Hatkeshwar Temple. Later in January, Home Minister Shah inaugurated a newly built cancer hospital and a sanatorium in Surat on January 23.

He also launched the ‘Hindu Spiritual and Service Fair’ at Gujarat University Ground in Ahmedabad and inaugurated two underpasses in the city’s Sabarmati and New Ranip areas. Additionally, he laid the foundation stone for drainage and water conservation projects in Ranip and addressed the public at Sardar Chowk.

Meghalaya’s first sailing yacht launched in Umiam Lake

Shillong, June 4 (IANS) Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday launched Meghalinor, the state’s first sailing yacht, at Umiam Lake near Shillong.

Speaking during the launch, Sangma said that the launch of the yacht is meaningful as it brings together two critical sectors of the government.

“Whether it is in tourism or sports, we have goals, targets and plans and also a larger vision of creating livelihood and employment opportunities, keeping the youth at the centre of what we do, and today’s program is the coming together of all these,” he added.

The Chief Minister also added that as Meghalaya’s population consists of about 50 per cent below the age of 20, the government has to plan well to cater to the needs of this young population and said, “We have to set the foundations for them to be able to provide them with the opportunities in the years to come.”

He further said that the Umiam lake has not acquired its true potential, and the government has started different interventions like water sports and sailing in Umiam lake, apart from developing and creating better infrastructures and informed about developing the area into one of the best resorts in the eastern region of the country.

“Today’s small yet significant move will improve the overall experience of our tourists, but this is only the beginning,” he said.

Bringing out the importance of the Umiam lake as a destination for water sports, the Chief Minister said the Umiam lake, with its picturesque settings, can be developed further for water sports.

Lauding the athletes who had brought accolades to the state in the last National Games in kayaking and canoeing, he added that the Umiam lake can become the centre for water sports in the state.

Assam CM inspects semiconductor plant in Morigaon

Guwahati, Jan 16 (IANS) During his day-long visit to Morigaon, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accompanied by the Assam Cabinet Ministers, visited and reviewed the progress of Assam’s inaugural semi-conductor integrated assembly and test facility at Jagiroad.

An official statement said: “It may be noted that this endeavour heralds the dawn of a transformative revolution within India’s semi-conductor sector, a vision set in motion with the laying of its foundation stone by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the 13th of March in the preceding year. Sarma himself had attended the Bhumi Pujan ceremony for this project, set to be established with an investment of approximately 27,000 crore rupees, on the 3rd of August last year.”

During his visit, the Chief Minister accompanied by the Assam Cabinet Ministers and senior officials from various departments, was briefed by Ashish Mishra, the Project Head of Tata’s Semiconductor Assembly and Testing facility, through an insightful PowerPoint presentation.

Sarma acknowledged that the state’s efforts in good governance were beginning to bear fruit and observed that the Jagiroad semiconductor initiative has unlocked vast industrial potential for Assam.

Emphasising the need for good governance to drive faster development, he also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid the foundation stone of three projects including Assam’s semiconductor project at Jagiroad.

He noted that if Assam’s semiconductor plant begins production ahead of others, it would be a matter of immense pride.

He also expressed optimism that Assam, through this venture, would capture global attention, positioning the semiconductor project as a pivotal force shaping the future. The Chief Minister stated that Assam’s strategic geographical position is adequate but the unrest in neighbourhood countries and limited local market often deters large institutions from investing in the state.

He expressed confidence that, through continued focus on good governance, Assam would attract more industries. Highlighting the state’s proactive support for the Jagiroad project, from power, water supply, security arrangement etc., he stressed that these efforts have sent a positive message to the industrial houses.

To showcase the power of collective action, the state arranged for Cabinet Ministers and senior government officials to visit the project site. He also emphasised that the key to building a prosperous Assam lies in ensuring good governance, noting the growing trust among companies looking to invest in the state.

Sarma noted that the upcoming Advantage Assam 2.0 event in February will be bolstered by Tata Electronics’ positive feedback on the government’s support for the Jagiroad project, which has already drawn the attention of numerous investors.

Reflecting on the state’s evolution, he said that Assam has entered a transformative era, where collective efforts will propel it to new heights. The Jagiroad project, he noted, will serve as a shining example of the state’s promising future.
