CBI books Nagaland University professor for bribery

New Delhi/Kohima, July 15 (IANS) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case against a Senior Professor of Nagaland University who was allegedly involved in the transaction of bribes and other tender-related irregularities, agency sources said on Tuesday.

A CBI statement has said that the central probe agency registered a case on Saturday (July 12) against the accused Chitta Ranjan Deb, Senior Professor and Director IQAC, Dean of School of Sciences, Department of Botany, Nagaland University, a central university.

“There are allegations that Deb is accused in indulging in various corrupt and illegal practices and with a predetermined intention to cause wrongful loss to Nagaland University and corresponding personal pecuniary gain to himself in the matter of favourable award of supply orders of scientific equipment, consumables, etc, showing favour to different bidders or companies against obtaining undue advantage or bribe,” the statement said.

The CBI on Saturday (July 12) conducted searches at different places — Jorhat (Assam), Lumani (Nagaland) and Agartala (Tripura) and on subsequent dates, leading to the recovery of incriminating documents relating to the transaction of bribes as well as tender-related documents from the offices of bidders or companies and accused.

Deb, 57, a resident of Tripura, joined Nagaland University, Lumanion, in August 1997 as a lecturer and is presently working as Senior Professor and Director IQAC, Dean of School of Sciences, Department of Botany. According to his profile, Deb completed his graduation from Tripura University and a Postgraduate (in 1994) and Doctoral degree (in 2000) from the North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong.

Deb is actively associated with several National/International academic organisations as a member. Nagaland University, the 13th Central University and the only Central University in Nagaland, came into being on September 6, 1994, having jurisdiction over the entire state of Nagaland. There are 76 colleges from all over the state of Nagaland currently affiliated with the University.

Bhopal, Dec 19 (IANS) The Madhya Pradesh government is gearing up for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Chhatapur to lay the foundation stone for the Ken-Betwa link project on December 25.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav will visit the Bundelkhand region on Thursday to review the state government’s preparations and participate in several programmes organised in different districts ahead of PM Modi’s visit.

The Chief Minister will participate in the ‘Kisan Sammelan’ (farmers gathering) at a stadium in Chhatarpur district. The farmers from districts Panna, Chhatarpur, Sagar of Bundelkhand region will attend the event.

Chief Minister Yadav will address the gathering of farmers to inform them about the benefits of the much-talked Ken-Betwa river linking project between Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

Later, he will participate in a ‘Jal Kalash Yatra’ being organised in Panna district. A group of women will take out a vibrant procession through the streets. Further, the Chief Minister will attend a ‘Sant Sammelan’ (gathering of saints) in Panna.

All these events are being organised under the ‘Jan-Kalyan Parv’, a campaign launched on the completion of one year of the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh.

The Ken-Betwa River interlinking project will transport excess water from the Ken River in Madhya Pradesh to the Betwa River in Uttar Pradesh to irrigate the drought-prone Bundelkhand region.

PM Modi will visit Chhatarpur to lay the foundation stone of the Ken-Betwa river linking project on the occasion of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s birth anniversary on December 25.

Earlier, CM Yadav said that the project will provide water for irrigation for over 8.1 lakh hectares in MP’s Bundelkhand region and another 2.5 lakh hectares in Uttar Pradesh. Chhatarpur, Panna, Tikamgarh, Niwari, Sheopur, Damoh, Datia, Raisen, Vidisha and Sagar districts will benefit from the project.

Notably, a similar river interlining project was initiated between Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. A tripartite agreement was signed between MP, Rajasthan, and the Central government in the presence of PM Modi in Jaipur on Tuesday.

The project will provide water for 6.1 lakh hectares of farmland under irrigation in 11 districts of Madhya Pradesh, including Guna, Rajgarh, Shivpuri, Dewas, Ujjain, Agar, Mandsaur and Morena.

Congress, BJP had an unethical alliance in Chandigarh mayoral poll: Punjab AAP

Chandigarh, Jan 30 (IANS) Punjab Finance Minister and senior AAP leader, Harpal Singh Cheema, claimed on Thursday that Congress and the BJP had an unethical alliance during the elections Chandigarh mayoral poll.

“We fulfilled our duty, which is why Congress’ Deputy Mayor and Senior Deputy Mayor were elected with the votes of our councillors. The Congress has betrayed us. Congress councillors indulged in cross-voting, leading to BJP’s Mayor being elected,” claimed Cheema.

Cheema further claimed that both the Congress and the BJP are “secretly colluding”.

“They want to stop us. Both parties are scared of the growing influence of AAP. They are even contesting the Delhi Assembly elections together, but this time too, we will form the government in Delhi with a massive majority,” he said.

In a historic victory, the BJP defeated the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-Congress alliance in the Chandigarh mayoral elections. BJP candidate Harpreet Kaur Babla secured 19 votes, while the AAP-Congress alliance’s candidate, Prem Lata, received 17 votes.

Harpreet Kaur defeated AAP’s Prem Lata by two votes. The latter got 17 votes.

In the 36-member House, the AAP-Congress alliance has 19 councillors — 13 votes of AAP and six of the Congress, while the BJP has 16 votes.

One vote was of Congress MP Manish Tewari, an ex-officio member of the corporation, taking its total votes to 20.

However, Congress candidates from the INDIA Bloc, Jasbir Singh Bunty and Taruna Mehta, were elected as Senior Deputy Mayor, and Deputy Mayor of Chandigarh, respectively, by securing 19 votes each.

Meanwhile, BJP’s Punjab spokesperson, Pritpal Singh Baliawal, said by winning the mayoral position the BJP has exposed the Congress-AAP alliance, proving that both parties are internally united while misleading the public.

Baliawal emphasised that although the people of Punjab helped Congress win seven seats in the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress-AAP alliance now stands “exposed” before the public.

He asserted that this will directly impact the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.

Sharmistha arrest: NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo seeks report from West Bengal

New Delhi, June 2 (IANS) The NHRC on Monday sought a report within 10 days from the West Bengal government and police on the safety of the jailed law student-cum-creator Sharmistha Panoli, while questioning the state authorities on her arrest formalities.

NHRC Member Priyank Kanoongo told IANS, “A notice was issued to the Chief Secretary and police chief on receiving a complaint alleging irregularities in the procedure adopted by police to arrest Panoli and take her on transit remand.”

“We have sought a report within 10 days,” Kanoongo said.

Twenty-two-year-old Sharmistha was arrested on Saturday in Haryana’s Gurugram by Kolkata Police for posting videos containing communal remarks during Operation Sindoor.

Earlier, Bollywood star Kangana Ranaut on Sunday called for the early release of Panoli, calling her arrest over a now-deleted social media post ‘unjustified’.

Kangana, known for essaying characters of strong women in her films, also expressed concerns over the damage caused to the influencer-cum-law student’s career after her arrest by Kolkata Police.

“No girl or daughter should be subjected to such high-handedness,” said Ranaut while talking to the media on the sidelines of an event in Delhi.

Targeting the Trinamool government in West Bengal, the National Award-winning actress and BJP MP from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, said, “I request the government of West Bengal not to make the state another North Korea.”

“Every citizen has democratic rights…if she made an objectionable comment, she also apologised for it later. She seems to have made the comment in a general context. Youngsters today use such language in the normal course,” she said, putting up a strong case for Sharmistha’s release.

Actor-cum-politician and Andhra Pradesh’s Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan showed solidarity with Sharmistha and asked West Bengal Police to act justly.

Amid the growing sympathy for the arrested influencer, the Kolkata Police sought to counter the ‘misleading narrative’ surrounding their action and her objectionable social media content.

In a post on the social media platform X, the Kolkata Police justified their action of apprehending the 22-year-old law student, claiming they acted lawfully according to the procedure established by law.

“Hate speech and abusive language should not be misconstrued as freedom of speech and expression as enshrined in Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution,” said the police.

“The accused was not arrested for expressing patriotism or for personal belief; legal actions were taken for sharing offensive content which promotes hatred among the communities,” the police said.
