Chhattisgarh: BJP leaders sustain injuries in ropeway mishap

Raipur, April 25 (IANS) A number of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders from Chhattisgarh sustained injuries in a ropeway mishap at the revered Maa Bamleshwari Devi temple in Dongargarh town, Rajnandgaon district, on Friday.

The incident occurred as the leaders were descending via the ropeway after offering prayers. The mishap occurred when the trolley they were traveling in broke near the stopping point at the base of the hill.

Fortunately, the accident took place at the very end of the descent, mitigating the severity of the situation and averting a greater calamity, according to officials.

Among those injured were state unit General Secretary Bharat Verma, senior leader Ramsevak Paikra, BJP leader Daya Singh, and Temple Trust President Manoj Agarwal.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai extended his wishes for Bharat Verma’s swift recovery, expressing his sentiments on his X handle.

He noted that while Bharat Verma sustained minor injuries, the others emerged largely unscathed. Officials reported that Bharat Verma suffered injuries to his hand and other parts of his body, while the remaining leaders experienced minor injuries.

All the injured were promptly transported to a hospital in Rajnandgaon for medical care. Ramsevak Paikra recounted that six individuals were inside the ropeway compartment at the time of the accident.

He assured that everyone is on the path to recovery, though Bharat Verma’s injuries are more pronounced.

The Maa Bamleshwari Devi temple, a site of profound spiritual significance, stands atop a hill, requiring pilgrims to ascend 1,100 steps to seek blessings.

For the convenience of visitors, a ropeway system has been installed, though this recent accident has raised concerns about its reliability.

The accident has brought attention to the safety standards of the ropeway system at the temple, which is a major attraction for devotees from across the nation and beyond.

The authorities are expected to launch an investigation into the matter to determine the cause of the mishap and ensure such incidents do not recur in the future.

New Delhi, April 14 (IANS) Congress National Spokesperson Pawan Khera, on Monday while addressing the media during the ‘Save Constitution’ rally in Amritsar, raised serious concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation in Punjab.

Speaking on the occasion of Dr B.R. Ambedkar’s 135th birth anniversary, Khera warned that the safety of both police personnel and citizens is under threat, and urged the state government to take responsibility.

“In Punjab, even police officers are not safe, and they are being attacked with grenades. The situation in Punjab is highly concerning,” Khera said, referring to recent incidents that have raised security alarms in the state.

Khera was in Amritsar to participate in a Congress rally to mark Ambedkar Jayanti and to highlight the need to protect the Constitution.

He, along with senior party leaders, paid floral tributes to Dr Ambedkar’s statue and emphasised the enduring relevance of his vision.

“When the Constitution is under threat, our rights are also in danger. Saving the Constitution is necessary to protect our rights,” he said, adding that both the central and state governments are failing in their duties.

Referring to Punjab Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa’s remarks, Khera stated, “I haven’t had a long conversation with Bajwa ji, but the government should take full responsibility to ensure that every citizen and police officer in Punjab is safe.”

Criticising Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Khera asserted, “There should be no political games when it comes to the security of the country, the state, or any province. Bhagwant Mann should take responsibility. People indulging in petty politics cannot run a government.”

He also rejected the idea that lodging FIRs would cover up the state’s failures. “Registering cases won’t hide the real issues. Everyone can see what’s happening. Punjab is on the right path, but there are conspiracies to derail it,” he warned.

Earlier on Sunday the Punjab Police questioned Leader of the Opposition and senior Congress leader, Partap Singh Bajwa, urging him to reveal his sources after he claimed in a TV interview that 50 hand grenades had entered the state, of which 18 had been used and 32 remained unaccounted for.

The Punjab Police’s counter-Intelligence team visited Bajwa’s residence in Chandigarh to question him about his claims.

Sanjay Nirupam expresses surprise over Saif Ali Khan’s fitness

Mumbai, Jan 22 (IANS) Sanjay Nirupam, the Shiv Sena leader, on Tuesday questioned the fitness of Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan, who was discharged from Mumbai’s Lilavati hospital five days after an intruder stabbed him inside his apartment with a knife in the neck and spine.

Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was on Tuesday discharged from Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital, six days after he was seriously injured in a knife attack during a burglary attempt at his Bandra home.

The actor has left for his Bandra home, where heavy force has been deployed.

Khan, it is learned, has been advised a complete bed rest for a week and asked not to receive visitors to prevent any infection.

However, Nirupam in his post on X uploaded a video in which Khan was walking comfortably waving to his fans.

Khan did not use a wheelchair but walked back inside his home surrounded by police.

Referring to the actor’s fitness despite the attack, Nirupam expressed surprise and said, “The doctors said that the knife had penetrated 2.5 inches inside Saif Ali Khan’s back. Probably he was trapped inside. The operation continued for six hours continuously. All this happened on January 16. Today is January 21. So fit as soon as you got out of the hospital? In just 5 days? Wonderful!”

Khan underwent a five-hour surgery at nearby Lilavati Hospital last week and was shifted to the ICU later in the day.

A piece of the knife was taken out of the actor’s body.

According to the doctor, the actor had suffered six injuries in the attack, two of which were deep cuts. He had escaped severe injuries.

The 54-year-old actor underwent neurosurgery to treat a spinal injury and plastic surgery to repair wounds on his neck and hands at Lilavati Hospital after he was stabbed by an intruder in the early hours of Thursday last week in his 12th-floor flat in ‘Satguru Sharan’ building in upscale in Bandra.

Khan got into a waiting black vehicle, accompanied by security personnel. His wife, actor Kareena Kapoor Khan, was also seen at the hospital shortly before he was discharged.

The Mumbai police have arrested the intruder who allegedly stabbed the Bollywood actor. The accused, identified as Shariful Islam Shehzad Mohammad Rohilla Amin Fakir (30), a Bangladeshi national, is at present in police custody.

The 30-year-old accused, arrested from adjoining Thane city on Sunday, has told the police he stabbed the actor in his back multiple times to free himself from his tight grip, an official said.

After the attack, the intruder escaped from Khan’s flat, and hid in the garden of the building for around two hours, the official said.

CBI books 2 military engineers in Prayagraj for demanding Rs 2.88 lakh bribe

Lucknow, March 29 (IANS) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a corruption and conspiracy case against two officers of the Military Engineering Service (MES) in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj for demanding a bribe or Rs 2.88 lakh from a manpower supplier.

Ravi Singh, Garrison Engineer (West), MES, Prayagraj, and Vimal Kumar, Assistant Garrison Engineer (Contract), were booked on the complaint of officials of Delhi-based company Rudraksh Enterprises.

The FIR was registered on Friday after the two MES officers were caught accepting the bribe.

A CBI official said the bribe was demanded from the contractor, Pawan Kumar Tiwari, whose firm had won a tender related to manpower outsourcing.

The two MES officials wanted the bribe to issue a ‘letter of acceptance’ regarding the bid won by his company, the official said.

The FIR said, “A complaint dated March 28 of Pawan Kumar Tiwari s/o Shri Lalit Kumar Tiwari (Proprietor of M/s Rudraksh Enterprises), R/o- 90, Ground Floor, Lane No. 2, Dada Dev Hospital, Vaishali Colony, South-West, Delhi, has been received.”

“It is alleged in the complaint that Ravi Singh, GE(West), MES, Prayagraj and Vimal Kumar, Assistant GE (Contract) O/o GE(West), MES, Prayagraj have demanded undue advantage of Rs. 2.88 lakh from the complainant for issuance of Letter of Acceptance in respect of Bid No. GeM/2024/B/5664427 allotted to his firm Rudraksh Enterprises,” the FIR said.

The complaint has been discreetly verified, which substantiated the allegations of demand of undue advantage of Rs. 2.88 lakhs on the part of Ravi Singh and Vimal Kumar, said the CBI FIR.

“The above-mentioned facts and discreet verification prima facie disclose commission of offence punishable under section 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) of BNS, 2023, and Section 7 of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018),” said the FIR registered by CBI’s Lucknow Branch.
