Christian Seva Sangha opposes caste classification among Christians in Karnataka

Bengaluru: The Christian Seva Sangha (CSS) has strongly opposed the Karnataka government’s move to identify castes among Christians, calling it a divisive and unconstitutional step.

In a letter addressed to CM Siddaramaiah, Backward Classes Welfare Minister, Chief Secretary and the State Backward Classes Commission, CSS president and Bengaluru-based advocate Shaji T Varghese said Christianity does not recognise caste, and any attempt to classify believers on that basis amounts to “creating conflict where none exists.”

Varghese pointed out that the Congress, during the last assembly polls, had promised to build a “garden of peace for all races,” but the current move contradicts that commitment. “Christianity follows sect-based traditions, not caste. By listing Christian castes, the government is deliberately trying to divide the community. This is an anti-religious move and must be scrapped immediately,” he wrote.

The CSS has urged the government to withdraw the decision and restore the earlier system of recognition and privileges for Christians, warning that the move could create unnecessary rifts within the community.
