CM Nitish Kumar attends Dahi-Chura feast at JD(U) MLA’s residence

Patna, Jan 14 (IANS) Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday attended a Dahi-Chura feast organised by Janata Dal(United) MLA Ratnesh Sada on the occasion of Makar Sankranti.

During the event, Ratnesh Sada felicitated the Chief Minister by presenting him with a shawl and a bouquet.

Several senior leaders of the party and ministers were present at the gathering, reflecting the political and social significance of the occasion.

Among those in attendance were JD(U) National Working President Sanjay Kumar Jha, Water Resources Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, JD(U) State President Umesh Kushwaha, MLAs Shyam Rajak, Sheila Kumari, and Santosh Kumar Nirala, MLCs Sanjay Kumar Singh alias Gandhiji and Kumud Verma, JD(U) National General Secretary Manish Kumar Verma, and Patna Mayor Sita Sahu, along with a large number of party officials, workers, and other dignitaries.

The CM also shared the pictures on his X handle. Earlier in the day, he greeted the people on the occasion, writing, “Heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to all on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. My wish is that this festival brings happiness, peace, and prosperity to everyone. May you all celebrate it with joy, mutual affection, and harmony.”

A day earlier, on Tuesday, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar attended a Dahi-Chura feast at the residence of Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha.

Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary and several other ministers were present on that occasion as well.

In Bihar, Makar Sankranti is celebrated not only as a religious festival but also as a symbol of social harmony and cultural identity.

Traditional food items such as Dahi-Chura, Tilkut, and other sweets are important elements of the feast and form an essential part of the celebrations.

Dahi-Chura, in particular, holds a special place in Bihar’s culinary tradition, representing values of simplicity, equality, and community bonding.

The festival is celebrated with equal enthusiasm across villages and cities, bringing together people from all sections of society.

During Makar Shankranti, a series of Dahi-Chura events is organised by various political parties and leaders.

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha also organised a similar event at his official residence in Patna on Tuesday, and Janshakti Janata Dal National President held the Dahi-Chura feast at his residence in Patna on Wednesday.

This year, Congress organised an event in its official headquarters, ‘Sadaqat Ashram’ in Patna.

Elated over the daughter’s feat, her teary-eyed mother Sunita Thakur wished God to “give everyone a daughter like Renuka”. “We want to say to all the parents, never hold your daughters back if they wish to move forward. Support them, encourage them, let them shine,” she told the media in her hometown.

She said that from childhood, Renuka played with a ball made of cloth and a wooden stick on the local ground. “Everyone in my family is happy and prayed for India’s win.” The entire family also celebrated India’s historic World Cup victory.

Expressing pride, cricketer’s brother Vinod Thakur said, “I am proud of my sister. We watched the entire match. Her bowling performance and wicket-taking were exceptional. We have since contacted her to offer our congratulations.”

Coming from a nondescript village, Parsa, in Rohru subdivision, Renuka has a long way to the global podium. The Indian Women’s Cricket Team won the Women’s World Cup — 2025 held in Mumbai by defeating South Africa.

New Delhi, July 21 (IANS) Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar has officially resigned from his position, effective immediately, citing health concerns as the primary reason. The resignation was tendered on Monday under Article 67(a) of the Constitution of India.

Jagdeep Dhankhar, who assumed office as the 14th Vice President of India in 2022, submitted his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu, expressing his intention to prioritise healthcare and adhere to medical advice. Prior to his role as Vice President, Dhankhar served as the Governor of West Bengal from 2019 to 2022.

In his resignation letter addressed to the President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar extended gratitude to key dignitaries and institutions for their support and collaboration during his tenure:

Respected Rashtrapati ji,

To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution.

Air India SATS sacks 4 senior officials amid public outrage over party video

New Delhi, June 28 (IANS) Air India SATS (AISATS) has sacked four senior officials after a video of an office party in Gurugram went viral, triggering widespread shock and outrage over the callous attitude of the staffers as the nation mourns the death of 270 people in the tragic Ahmedabad plane crash.

The video, which featured AISATS Chief Operating Officer Abraham Zachariah and other officials dancing to blaring music, was widely condemned on social media.

AISATS is a company that provides airport ground services. It is a joint venture, owned equally (50-50) by two companies — Air India Limited, which is part of the Tata Group, and SATS Limited, a company that offers airport services and food solutions.

The party, which took place on June 20, was attended by Bengaluru International Airport Limited’s GM and head Sampreet Kotian, AISATS’ Chief Operating Officer Abraham Zakaria, and the company’s Chief Financial Officer, sources told IANS.

This insensitive celebration came at a time when many families were still waiting to see their loved ones for the last time, and funeral pyres were yet to cool.

As of Friday morning, only 202 of the 220 identified bodies had been handed over to families.

Several others remain in morgues, their DNA still being matched, as authorities continue the difficult task of identification.

AISATS, the company responsible for ground handling of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner — that crashed — at Delhi airport and the load sheet for its Ahmedabad to London Gatwick leg, finds itself at the centre of controversy — not just for its role in the chain of operations, but now also for its seemingly tone-deaf behaviour following the disaster.

“AISATS is aware of a video being circulated on social media that, unfortunately, is completely out of context. Notwithstanding, we sincerely regret any emotional discomfort this may have caused,” an AISATS spokesperson said in a statement shared with IANS.

But the apology has done little to calm public anger. Many believe the video reflects a shocking lack of empathy and respect for the victims and their families.

The crash occurred on June 12 when Flight AI171 suffered a catastrophic engine failure shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad.

The aircraft plunged into a densely populated area, hitting a medical college hostel building and killing all 241 people on board, along with several others on the ground.

The impact and subsequent fire left most bodies badly charred, requiring forensic teams to rely on DNA testing for identification.

Among the victims were 151 Indian nationals, 34 British citizens, seven Portuguese nationals, one Canadian, and nine ground staff or airport workers.
