CM Stalin to mark 73rd birthday with homage to Dravidian icons amid poll preparations

Chennai, March 1 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M.K. Stalin will celebrate his 73rd birthday on Sunday, with the day’s events reflecting both personal reverence and political symbolism as the state moves closer to the Assembly election season.

The Chief Minister is scheduled to begin the day by paying floral tributes at the memorial of former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai at Marina Beach. He will then proceed to the nearby memorial of his father and former CM M. Karunanidhi, reaffirming his ideological and political lineage within the Dravidian movement.

Continuing the tradition that has marked his public life, CM Stalin will also visit Periyar Thidal in Vepery to offer homage at the memorial of social reformer Periyar E.V. Ramasamy.

The gesture is seen as a reiteration of the DMK’s foundational commitment to the principles of social justice, rationalism, and self-respect championed by Periyar and institutionalised by Annadurai and Karunanidhi.

Later in the day, the Chief Minister will travel to Anna Arivalayam, the DMK headquarters in Teynampet, where he will receive greetings from senior party leaders, district secretaries, legislators, alliance representatives, and cadres.

Party workers from across the state are likely to gather in large numbers to extend their wishes, turning the occasion into a show of organisational strength.

In the run-up to the elections, the birthday celebrations are being planned on a grand scale across Tamil Nadu. District units of the DMK have reportedly organised welfare initiatives, blood donation camps, distribution of aid to the underprivileged, and public meetings highlighting the government’s achievements over the past five years.

Party insiders say the celebrations will double as a mobilisation exercise, energising cadres and reinforcing the party’s campaign narrative.

Banners, public outreach events, and social media campaigns are also expected to mark the occasion.

As Stalin steps into his 73rd year, the birthday observances are set to blend homage, political messaging, and grassroots engagement — underscoring the DMK’s attempt to consolidate its base ahead of a crucial electoral battle.

Jaipur, July 24 (IANS) Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, in response to a question raised by Rajya Sabha MP and Rajasthan unit BJP chief Madan Rathore, provided detailed information in the Rajya Sabha on the Ministry’s efforts to strengthen access to justice.

He said that the Ministry of Law and Justice has made significant strides in ensuring justice for the economically and socially weaker sections. Through the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), the Ministry has resolved over 23 crore cases via National Lok Adalats in the past three years.

In addition, around 34 lakh cases were settled in State Lok Adalats, and 6.41 lakh cases through Permanent Lok Adalats, providing timely relief to citizens, added Meghwal. Rathore meanwhile said that legal assistance and counseling are being extended to the needy at the state, district, and tehsil levels. Legal Services Authorities are conducting nationwide awareness programs focusing on laws and welfare schemes related to children, laborers, disaster victims, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Divyangjans (persons with disabilities).

Over the last three years, 13.83 lakh legal awareness programs have been conducted, reaching 14.96 crore people. He also informed the House that the Legal Aid Defense Counsel System Scheme, launched by Prime Minister Modi in 2023–24, is being actively implemented by NALSA.

As part of the initiative, Legal Aid Defense Counsel offices have been established in 662 districts across India. In the last two years, 8.69 lakh cases have been assigned to Legal Aid Defense Counsels, of which 5.85 lakh cases have already been disposed of.

This extensive outreach and case resolution mechanism reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring speedy, affordable, and accessible justice for all citizens, especially the marginalised, Rathore added.

Arunachal police rescue three Assam teens who boarded ‘wrong’ train

Itanagar, March 14 (IANS) Arunachal Pradesh police on Friday rescued three teenage girls from Assam at Naharlagun railway station, near Itanagar, the police said.

A police officer said that the girls, aged 14 to 15 years, boarded a train from Duliajan intending to reach Tinsukia but inadvertently arrived at Naharlagun railway station in Arunachal Pradesh on Wednesday.

The girls — aged 14 to 15 years — boarded a train on March 12 from Duliajan intending to reach Tinsukia, also in the state’s same region, but inadvertently reached Naharlagun railway station, near Arunachal Pradesh capital on the same day evening.

After getting information from the people in the Naharlagun railway station, the police immediately rescued the girls, provided medical care and took them to Oju Shelter Home at Naharlagun.

Police contacted Assam’s Duliajan police, who very quickly traced the parents of the minors.

The three girls reunited with their parents at Papu Hills police station on Friday.

The parents of the minors appreciated the Arunachal Pradesh police for their quick proactive action and coordination with the support of Duliajan Police before their parents were traced.

The swift and professional action by Papu Hills Police in Itanagar ensured the safety and well-being of the teenage girls and also prevented any potential risks of exploitation or human trafficking as well.

The successful action underlined the dedication of law enforcement agencies in safeguarding vulnerable girls, a senior Arunachal Pradesh police official said.

Last year, Arunachal Pradesh police busted an inter-state racket at Chimpu in Papum Pare district. Police rescued five minors and arrested 21 accused in the inter-state prostitution racket involving human traffickers from the state and neighbouring Assam.

Arunachal Pradesh Women Commission Chairperson Kenjum Pakam earlier urged the state government to take stern action against those involved in the child trafficking and sexual exploitation racket.

Kerala HC refuses bail to five juveniles accused of murdering Class 10 student

Kochi, April 25 (IANS) The Kerala High Court on Friday refused bail to five juveniles, arrested for involvement in the murder of a 15-year-old Class 10 student who was allegedly attacked by his fellow students in Kozhikode, leading to his death.

The five have been charged with murder, wrongful restraint, unlawful assembly, and voluntarily causing grave injuries.

All five are students and have been in judicial custody for the past 56 days.

The court also took into account that the victim was a 15-year-old and said, considering the above aspects, it was not inclined to grant bail to the petitioners.

“Moreover, in the present cases, a minor aged 15 years was murdered. It is noteworthy that the Juvenile Justice Act aims not only to take care of the children in conflict with the law but also to address the needs and welfare of all juveniles. The objective must be balanced with the need to ensure justice for victims and the broader societal interest,” it said.

Shahabas, a student of MJ Higher Secondary School, Thamarassery, Kozhikode, succumbed to serious injuries on March 1 after being injured in the fight between the students of his school and Thamarassery GVHSS following a dispute during a farewell event at a tuition centre in the last week of February.

Even though the teachers intervened then through a series of WhatsApp messages, the tension escalated, leading to a violent clash near the tuition centre. Shahabas suffered serious head injuries, which led to his death.

Police pressed murder charges against the five and stated that the accused used weapons, including a truncheon and a nunchaku, for the attack on Shahabas.

Though Shahabas was not a student at the tuition centre, he was called to the venue while running an errand.

Following the attack, he was taken home by a friend. Initially unaware of the attack, his family suspected drug use when they found him in a weak state at home.

Upon learning the truth, he was rushed to Thamarassery Taluk Hospital and later shifted to Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital, where he passed away.
