Command Hospital at Chandimandir saves life of soldier airlifted from Kargil

Chandigarh, June 8 (IANS) In a remarkable display of medical expertise, the Chandimandir Command Hospital of Western Command saved the life of a serving soldier airlifted from Kargil with a life-threatening condition.

The soldier, who was experiencing severe respiratory distress, was diagnosed with bilateral pulmonary thromboembolism, a high-altitude related emergency condition.

A team of medical specialists, led by Lt Col Purushotham, provided timely diagnosis and emergency treatment, including clot dissolution, the Defence Wing said in a statement. The patient’s life was saved due to prompt action, and he is currently stable and recovering on oxygen support.

The successful airlift of the soldier from Kargil to Command Hospital Chandimandir, near here, was made possible by the Indian Air Force’s An-32 aircraft, which executed the mission at the edge of its performance envelope, showcasing exceptional professionalism and dedication.

This remarkable feat is a testament to the exceptional medical care provided by the Command Hospital, demonstrating its commitment to saving lives and serving those who serve the nation. A day earlier, the aircraft airlifted the critically ill from Kargil to Chandimandir.

High altitude and extreme temperatures make Kargil a formidable challenge for transport operations during summer. This mission was executed at first light, using the aircraft at the edge of its performance envelope.

Last week, President Droupadi Murmu presented the Param Vishisht Seva Medal to Lieutenant General Manoj Kumar Katiyar, GoC-in-C, Western Command (The Infantry).

President Murmu conferred 92 Distinguished Service Decorations to the personnel of the Armed Forces, Indian Coast Guard and Border Roads Organisation during the Defence Investiture Ceremony 2025 (Phase-II) at Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi on June 4.

These decorations — 30 Param Vishisht Seva Medals (PVSMs), five Uttam Yudh Seva Medals (UYSMs) and 57 Ati Vishisht Seva Medals (AVSMs) — have been given to the personnel for distinguished service of exceptional order.

Govt school teacher arrested for sexually abusing ten girl students in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, Feb 9 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Police have arrested a science teacher at a government school in Yercaud, Salem, on the charges of sexually abusing ten female students.

The accused, Ilayakannu (37), was arrested by Yercaud police on Friday night and charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act.

Ilayakannu, who taught science to students in classes 10 and 12, allegedly assaulted ten girls.

The incident came to light when one of the victims gathered the courage to inform the school’s headmistress and demanded action against the teacher.

The headmistress immediately reported the matter to officials of the Education Department and the District Child Protection Unit. Following this, a team visited the school and enquired the students.

Preliminary inquiries confirmed that the teacher had abused ten students. Based on the complaint filed by the District Child Protection Unit, the Kondalampatti All Women’s Police Station registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) Act and arrested Ilayakannu.

Further investigations are underway.

In a similar incident in Krishnagiri District recently, three government school teachers were arrested for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl at Panchayat Union Middle School in Bargur, Krishnagiri district.

The crime, which occurred in early January, only came to light on February 3 when schoolteachers visited the girl’s home to enquire about her prolonged absence.

During their visit, the girl disclosed the sexual assault, which reportedly occurred inside a toilet on the school campus. Following her revelation, the school’s headmistress and the Block Education Officer filed a complaint, leading to the arrest of the three accused teachers on February 4.

Krishnagiri District Collector Dhinesh Kumar confirmed that the girl is being provided mental health support by psychiatrists.

Superintendent of Police P. Thangadurai stated that the police and Child Welfare Committee visited the girl at her home before taking her to a One-Stop Centre at Krishnagiri Government Medical College Hospital for support.

The accused teachers have denied the charges but were suspended pending investigation. A preliminary internal inquiry by the School Education Department found no other students or teachers with complaints against them.

The incident has sparked outrage, with AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) expressing shock.

In a social media post, he criticised the DMK government for “failing” to ensure students’ safety in government schools and called upon Chief Minister M. K. Stalin to take full responsibility for the incident.

He added, “Girls are not safe in govt schools and colleges.”

Palaniswami criticised CM Stalin for accusing him of inciting fear and asked what DMK ministers had to say about this situation.

BJP Tamil Nadu state president K. Annamalai condemned the incident and said sexual assault on women and girls had become a horrifying reality in Tamil Nadu.

He cited a report of a sexual assault on an 18-year-old girl in a moving autorickshaw a couple of days before.

Operation Sindoor succeeded with Maa Karni’s blessings: Rajasthan BJP chief

Jaipur, May 20 (IANS) Rajasthan BJP chief Madan Rathore said on Tuesday that the Operation Sindoor succeeded with the blessings of Maa Karni.

He also reviewed preparations for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Bikaner on May 22, holding a key meeting with party workers. Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal also participated in the meeting.

Addressing a press conference after the review, Rathore informed that Prime Minister Modi will address a massive public gathering in Bikaner.

“Thousands of citizens from the region are expected to attend. The Prime Minister’s address will energise the workers and provide vital guidance,” he said.

Highlighting the success of Operation Sindoor, Rathore attributed the achievement to the blessings of Maa Karni and the valour of the Indian Army.

“With the guidance of Prime Minister Modi and the unmatched bravery of our forces, the Indian Army penetrated 500 km inside Pakistan’s territory, eliminated terrorists, and dismantled their operational bases,” he said.

Rathore added that the Army specifically targeted terrorist hideouts, including those linked to the Kandahar hijacking, while ensuring no civilian harm.

“Some terrorists reportedly regretted surviving, realising their end was inevitable. Operation Sindoor has instilled fear among terror networks.”

Rathore added that Pakistan panicked in the wake of Operation Sindoor and sought ceasefire negotiations through multiple countries.

“The Pakistani Army conveyed its desire to avoid war. In return, the Indian Army laid down tough conditions—surrender of the remaining terrorists and a commitment that Pakistan would no longer shelter terrorism. Only after this, the operation was paused,” Rathore asserted.

He emphasised that Operation Sindoor remains active against any future terrorist activities and will continue as necessary.

Rathore also spoke about the ongoing Tiranga and Sindoor Yatras across the country following the success of Operation Sindoor.

“These Yatras aim to foster patriotism and boost the morale of our armed forces. The public response has been overwhelmingly enthusiastic,” he said.

Gujarat: Project approved for desilting & remolding of Kenwal Lake in Anand

Anand, March 3 (IANS) The Gujarat government has approved a Rs 79 crore project for the desilting and remolding of Kenwal Lake, a vital water source in Anand.

The tendering process is nearing completion, and work is expected to commence soon. The 16-year-old lake, spanning 525 hectares, will undergo restoration, with 17-18 per cent of its area set to be desilted and reshaped, Water Resources and Water Supply Minister Kunwarjibhai Bawaliya announced in the Legislative Assembly.

Kenwal Lake plays a crucial role in water supply, providing drinking water to approximately 1,987 villages and irrigation water to 1,436 hectares of farmland.

Additionally, it serves nine cities, including Ahmedabad.

The restoration project will include embankment strengthening, the construction of a protective wall, the installation of paver blocks, and road development. Addressing legislative queries, Minister Bawaliya highlighted that Kenwal Lake is integral to Gujarat’s water supply network, supporting irrigation, drinking water distribution, and fisheries.

He also credited former Water Supply Minister Narottambhai Patel for his efforts in implementing the water supply scheme, particularly benefiting Saurashtra and his constituency, Jasdan. Gujarat has made significant progress in water supply infrastructure, ensuring access to drinking water for rural and urban populations.

The state operates multiple water supply schemes, benefiting over 2.25 crore people across 18,000+ villages and 200+ towns. Major projects include the Sujalam Sufalam Yojana, which enhances water conservation, and the Sardar Sarovar Project, which supplies drinking water to more than 9,000 villages and 173 towns.

The Gujarat Water Supply and Sewerage Board (GWSSB) manages rural and urban water distribution through regional and group water supply schemes.

Additionally, the SAUNI Yojana (Saurashtra Narmada Avtaran Irrigation) plays a vital role in transferring excess Narmada water to parched regions of Saurashtra.

Groundwater recharge initiatives, desalination plants, and rainwater harvesting are also being implemented to ensure long-term water security.
