Delhi: Notorious criminal nabbed under Arms Act, has history of 50 criminal cases

New Delhi, March 30 (IANS) In a major development, the Delhi Police Crime Branch on Sunday apprehended a notorious criminal named Rahul Ranjan from Jahangirpuri after months of pursuit. The criminal was on the run and wanted in at least two cases of the Arms Act and theft.

The notorious criminal is a habitual offender and has been involved in about 50 cases, including robbery, snatching, theft, NDPS, attempt to murder and more, informed the police.

The Crime Branch, acting on a tip-off on Sunday, reached the spot where he was hiding and took him into custody. For months, he had been changing his place of stay to evade arrest.

Secret information about Rahul Ranjan was received by a police head constable, following which the police team sprang into action and nabbed him from the Jahangirpuri area.

A team led by Inspector K.K. Sharma and under the supervision of ACP Arvind Kumar and DCP Vikram Singh launched a manhunt to nab the absconder. The police raided his rented accommodation in Jahangirpuri, where he was found to be living with his family.

Among the two cases in which he has been nabbed are robbery in the Janakpuri area and possession of Arms, including live cartridges. Both incidents happened about 10 years ago, and he was declared a proclaimed offender by the court, but he didn’t appear for court hearings and kept absconding from the police net.

In 2013, he snatched the purse of a woman resident while she was parking her scooty. Rahul, along with his accomplice, came from behind and lifted her purse containing documents like voter card, ATM card, Doctor slip and a gold chain of 15 gms. He was arrested, and stolen items were recovered from him. He didn’t appear in repeated court hearings and was declared a proclaimed offender.

In another incident, the police team had laid a trap to nab him near West Uttam Nagar Metro station and apprehended him on a motorcycle. A country-made pistol (315 bore) along with 1 live cartridge was recovered from his possession. An FIR under the Arms Act was lodged against him, and a trial was initiated against him.

Rahul Ranjan attained notoriety after dropping out of school. After quitting school, he started working in the transport department, where he came into contact with habitual criminals and started committing crimes like snatching and robbery.

As the Assembly election 2025 draws near, the event served as a vital reminder of the crucial role each voter plays in shaping the state’s future.

The voter turnout in 2020 Delhi Assembly election was 62.82 per cent, down 4.65 per cent from 67.47 per cent in 2015.

As per the Election Commission, out of Delhi’s 70 constituencies, 58 are general and 12 SCs, across 11 districts. There are 83.49 lakh male voters, 71.74 lakh female voters, and 25.89 lakh young voters, adding up to a total of 1.55 crore voters.

According to Delhi CEO Vaz, the total number of polling stations in Delhi election is 13,033, out of which persons with disability (PwD) and women-managed are 70 each.

The term of the current Delhi Assembly ends on February 23, and the whole election process, including the declaration of result on February 8 and swearing in of the next government, has to be completed before that.

‘Have courage’: If someone misbehaves slap them with slippers, Rajasthan Guv urges female students

Jaipur, Feb 20 (IANS) Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Bagde on Thursday asked the female students to have the courage to act and that if anyone tries to misbehave they should be slapped with slippers.

“Female students must stand up against misconduct. If someone misbehaves, slap them or hit them with slippers. Don’t hesitate, have the courage to act,” said the Governor during his visit to Malakheda in the Alwar district, where he laid the foundation stone for the second phase of construction at Rajarshi Bhartrihari Matsya University in Haldina.

He further praised the bravery of female students and urged them to uphold moral values while staying strong. Expressing concern over the passive approach of bystanders in distressing situations, he remarked: “I see many videos where people record incidents instead of helping. It is shameful when a female is harassed, and instead of intervening, people take out their phones. Drop the mobile, run, and catch the culprit by the collar. Don’t wait for the police, by the time they arrive, a crime may already be committed. This mentality must change.”

The Governor also called upon the people to keep making continuous efforts to make their courses timely, useful and updated in the light of the new education policy.

Remembering Maharaja Bhartrihari, he emphasised taking inspiration from his Shataks and teachings. He told the daughters to be fearless and brave. He said that wherever there is injustice, everyone should strongly oppose it and strengthen social values.

He further highlighted the evolving landscape of education, stating that merely obtaining a degree is no longer enough.

“There was a time when degrees were scarce and jobs were plentiful. Now, the competition is tough for everyone – whether with or without reservations. Intellectual ability is what truly matters,” he claimed.

The development at Rajarshi Bhartrihari Matsya University includes the construction of residences for faculty and staff, a playground, a digital library, and other essential facilities.

With an investment of Rs 61 crore, this initiative aims to enhance the university’s infrastructure, fostering growth in education and research.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Union Forest and Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav, District Collector Artika Shukla, and Vice Chancellor Sheelsindhu Pandey.
