Ex-BJP leader Mmhonlumo Kikon appointed NPP General Secretary

Shillong/Kohima, Feb 27 (IANS) Former BJP legislator from Nagaland and the party’s erstwhile national spokesperson, Mmhonlumo Kikon, has been appointed General Secretary (Political) of the National People’s Party (NPP) with immediate effect, party sources said on Friday.

NPP sources in Shillong said the appointment was made by the party’s National President and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma.

In his new role, Kikon has been entrusted with structured coordination and dialogue with various political parties and stakeholders across the Northeastern states. His mandate includes facilitating strategic alignment and consultations towards realising the vision of “One Northeast”.

According to an NPP statement, he will coordinate with all state presidents and office-bearers across the region to review political developments, assess electoral preparedness and address inter-state organisational matters.

He will also hold regular consultations with the party’s elected Members of Parliament, Members of Legislative Assemblies and other representatives to ensure policy coherence and political coordination.

“He is also entrusted to design and supervise dedicated political programmes, consultations, conventions and outreach initiatives aimed at enhancing the presence and reach of the party. All state units and party functionaries are hereby directed to extend full cooperation to him,” the statement said.

Kikon, a former member of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly from the Bhandari constituency, was previously associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), where he served as a national spokesperson. He had also been appointed BJP prabhari (in-charge) for Mizoram before resigning from the party.

A scholar, poet and social worker-turned-politician, Kikon resigned from the primary and active membership of the BJP on August 7, 2025. He was the only national spokesperson of the BJP from the Northeast at the time.

Meanwhile, on November 4, 2025, the NPP and the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), along with several other regional parties and leaders from the Northeastern states, announced after a summit in New Delhi their decision to form a new regional political front under a common banner.

The proposed platform aims to articulate and advance the causes of indigenous people of the region.

Chief Minister Sangma had then announced the constitution of a nine-member committee to work out the modalities of the proposed common platform within 45 days. NPP’s National Working President J. M. Sangma was named convener of the committee, while Mmhonlumo Kikon was designated as its member secretary.

Both the NPP and the TMP are allies of the BJP in Meghalaya and Tripura respectively.

Ahmedabad, July 9 (IANS) Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday said that he will take up natural farming after retiring from public life and devote a considerable amount of time to reading Hindu scriptures, including the Vedas and Upanishads.

The Home Minister shared his “retirement plan” while speaking at the ‘Sahkar Samvaad’ event in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Addressing the gathering, the Home Minister gave a sneak peek into his post-retirement life and said that after bowing out from public life, he will dedicate the rest of his life to the Vedas, Upanishads, and natural farming.

Natural farming, also called organic farming, is a science-based technique which has immense benefits, he said.

Home Minister Shah said, “Wheat grown with chemical fertilisers leads to various health issues, including many lifestyle disorders like BP, diabetes, thyroid and life-threatening diseases like cancer.”

“Natural farming not only helps in making the body disease-free but also reduces one’s dependence on medicines,” he added.

He further said that natural farming also enhances agricultural productivity and shared his own experience of recording a 1.5 times jump in agricultural produce at his farmland.

Months ago, the Home Minister shared his weight-loss journey and spoke about how his health underwent a big transformation on the back of positive habits, including the right amount of food and water, coupled with exercise and adequate sleep.

Speaking on World Liver Day, he said, “I have achieved a very big change since May 2019 till now. By having the right amount of sleep, pure water, food and exercise, I have achieved much in life. In the last 4.5 years, I have become free from allopathic medicines,” he said.

He also urged the youth to follow a regimen of two hours of physical exercise and six hours of sleep to ensure good health, stating that they have another 40-50 years to live and contribute to the nation’s progress.

‘Electoral fraud’: Congress plans nationwide campaign, cites ‘Do or Die’ moment for democracy

New Delhi, Aug 8 (IANS) A day after Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI), accusing it of facilitating “vote theft” in collusion with the BJP, the party has announced a nationwide campaign to expose what it calls a ‘fraud on democracy.’

Taking to social media platform X on Friday, Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal invoked Mahatma Gandhi’s historic “Do or Die” call during the Quit India Movement, calling for a similar resolve to “save Indian democracy.”

“Just as Bapu gave us the ‘Do or Die’ call during the Quit India movement, we today must embark upon a similar do-or-die mission,” Venugopal said, while announcing a high-level meeting of party leaders to discuss the way forward.

The meeting, scheduled for August 11 at 4:30 PM at the AICC headquarters (24 Akbar Road), will be presided over by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. It will include AICC General Secretaries, state in-charges, and heads of all frontal organisations of the party.

As part of its campaign, the Congress has instructed all Pradesh Congress Committees (PCCs) across the country to screen LoP Rahul Gandhi’s press conference on August 9 at state headquarters, terming it a “landmark” moment in the party’s effort to “expose the BJP–ECI nexus.”

“Tomorrow, 9th August, Pradesh Congress Committees across the country will be screening Rahul ji’s landmark press conference at state headquarters to expose the BJP-ECI nexus in this electoral fraud,” Venugopal added.

The Congress is planning to scale up its attack on the ruling BJP over alleged large-scale manipulation of the electoral rolls.

LoP Rahul Gandhi, during his press conference on August 7, had presented a lengthy presentation where he claimed vote theft of over one lakh voters in Mahadevapura in Karnataka and added that this was the tip of an iceberg, as vote theft has been happening across the states.

10 Sambhal mosques including Jama Masjid to be covered with tarpaulin during Holi

Sambhal, March 12 (IANS) In a significant move, the Uttar Pradesh (UP) administration has decided to cover ten mosques in Sambhal during Holi celebrations on Friday. March 14 marks a rare sixty-year coincidence of the festival of colours and a Ramazan ‘Jumma’ falling together on the same day.

Briefing the media over the UP administration’s preparedness, Sambhal SP, Shrish Chandra, said that the decision was taken to maintain communal harmony and facilitate the two communities in celebrating their respective festivals with full glee and gaiety.

“A total of ten mosques have been identified which fall in the proposed route of the ‘Chaupai’ procession. All of them will be covered to prevent any disturbance or tension between the two communities,” he said.

He said that the decision has been taken to cover those mosques, from where the ‘Chaupai’ processions (a customary practice during Holi) will cross through and also added that this has been a practice for years.

“The conventional route of the ‘Chaupai’ procession during Holi has been identified and ten mosques along the route will be covered,” he said.

According to reports, an agreement has also been reached to alter the timings of the Friday prayers and ‘Chaupai’ processions, so that the two don’t overlap each other.

The Friday ‘namaaz (prayers)’ will take place either before or after the Holi procession. Also, outsiders won’t have permission to enter mosque premises.

Local authorities and UP Police officials have been given instructions to maintain strict vigil and prevent any untoward incidents from unfolding on the day of the festival.

The ten mosques which will be covered with tarpaulin in Sambhal during Holi celebrations, include the Shahi Jama Masjid, Ladania wali masjid, Thaane wali masjid, Ek raat masjid, Gurdwara road masjid, Gol masjid, Khajoor wali masjid, Anaar wali masjid and Gol dukaan wali masjid.

A peace meeting was also organised at the Sambhal police station, where the religious heads of the two communities discussed and deliberated on ways to prevent any incident of communal strife, during Holi celebrations and the Friday ‘namaaz’.
