Four special police teams formed to probe elderly woman’s murder in TN

Chennai, June 9 (IANS) The Tamil Nadu Police have formed four special teams and launched an intensive investigation into the murder of a 67-year-old woman, who was brutally stabbed to death by an unidentified gang at her farmhouse in Kulathupalayam of Coimbatore district, officials said on Monday.

The victim, identified as Samiyathal, had been living alone at her farmhouse following the death of her husband a few years ago.

Known to be a quiet and self-sufficient woman, she had recently attended a family wedding and returned home three days ago.

As per routine, she reportedly slept outside her house on the night of the incident due to the summer heat.

According to police sources, around Sunday midnight, a gang of unidentified men entered the premises and confronted Samiyathal with a knife.

They are believed to have threatened the victim to open the door to the main house.

When Samiyathal panicked and raised an alarm, the gang responded with brutal violence — stabbing her multiple times on the neck before fleeing the spot.

Despite her severe injuries, the elderly woman managed to call her neighbours for help.

Upon receiving the distress call, neighbours rushed to her aid and immediately informed the local police.

Officers from the Nallur police station arrived at the spot and rushed Samiyathal to a nearby private hospital.

Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after being admitted to the hospital.

In response to the shocking incident, the Namakkal district police have constituted four special teams to investigate the murder from multiple angles.

Forensic experts have collected evidence from the spot, and investigators are now reviewing the CCTV footage from the area to identify the accused.

Senior police officials said that robbery does not appear to be the motive, as there were no immediate signs of theft.

However, all possible angles, including personal enmity, are being looked into.

The murder has triggered fear and concern among local residents, particularly the elderly who live alone.

Police have assured the people that the culprits will be brought to justice at the earliest.

The investigation is underway.

Chandigarh, Feb 22 (IANS) Leaving the AAP government in Punjab red-faced, its NRI Affairs Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal had been heading a department that existed only on paper without allocation of staff for nearly 20 months.

This fact came to light in a gazette notification issued by the Chief Secretary on Friday, stating that the Department of Administrative Reforms, allocated to Dhaliwal, was non-existent.

Now, Dhaliwal will hold only the charge of the NRI Affairs Department.

“In partial modification of the previous Punjab government notification regarding the allocation of portfolios, among ministers, the Department of Administrative Reforms earlier allotted to Dhaliwal is not in existence as on date,” reads the notification.

The notification reads the decision to amend Dhaliwal’s portfolio, on the orders of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, had taken effect on February 7, 2025.

Previously, Dhaliwal held the Agriculture and Farmers Welfare portfolio.

In a Cabinet reshuffle in May 2023, he was allocated the Administrative Reforms Department. In another Cabinet reshuffle in September 2024, Dhaliwal continued with the “non-existence” department.

The Opposition BJP slammed the Bhagwant Mann-led AAP government and dubbed the decision as a “Kejriwal Model”.

Mocking the decision, journalist Kanchan Gupta on Saturday wrote on X, “Punjab had a Minister for Administrative Reforms but no Ministry of Administrative Reforms. AAP government headed by CM Bhagwant Mann was blissfully unaware of this till it erased the tag of Minister for Administrative Reforms. This is Kejriwal Model.”

The BJP’s IT Cell head Amit Malviya called AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal “a charlatan who must be banished from public life.”

“You can imagine the crisis in Punjab government if it took nearly 20 months to realise that a department assigned to one of its prominent ministers never actually existed,” he wrote on X.

Former Union Minister and Akali Dal leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal said, “Things like this were happening in Punjab as it was being run by a remote control in Delhi.”

Andhra Pradesh committed to leveraging emerging technologies: CM Naidu

Amaravati, May 11 (IANS) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said on Sunday that the state government is committed to leveraging emerging technologies to build an inclusive and sustainable future.

On the occasion of National Technology Day, the Chief Minister shared his view through a post on ‘X’.

“Innovation is the engine of progress and technology is its fuel. On National Technology Day, we celebrate the spirit of innovation and the transformative power of technology in Good Governance. From agriculture to AI, tech is revolutionising lives, boosting productivity and solving humanity’s greatest challenges,” said CM Naidu.

“In Andhra Pradesh, we are committed to leveraging emerging technologies to build an inclusive and sustainable future with Quantum Valley at the heart of this transformation. The world is watching India rise, and now is our time to lead the next global wave of innovation,” added the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president.

The Chief Minister also posted a message on Mother’s Day. He extended his warm greetings to all mothers. “A mother is not just the first teacher, she is the heartbeat of every home, the pillar of strength, and the guiding force behind generations. From nurturing values in a child to building the moral fabric of the nation, a mother’s role is unparalleled. With deep gratitude, I salute every mother for her boundless love, countless sacrifices, and her timeless contribution to our families, our society, and our country,” wrote Naidu.

CM Naidu’s son and Minister for Information Technology, Nara Lokesh, also greeted all mothers on Mother’s Day.

Lokesh posted a picture with his mother Bhuvaneswari while sharing his thoughts. “My mother introduced me to this world. My mother led me and taught me how to walk. My mother stood by me whether I won or lost,” wrote Lokesh.

“I extend my best wishes to my mother, who gave me this life. Mother is the eternal inspiration of every child. On the occasion of Mother’s Day, I bow to all the mothers who embody patience, sacrifice, and love,” he added.

Actor-politician Vijay accuses DMK of misleading TN on NEET scrapping

Chennai, Jan 11 (IANS) Tamil superstar and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) founder Vijay has accused the DMK of misleading the people of Tamil Nadu with false promises of scrapping the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET).

In a post on social media platform X, Vijay criticised Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, saying that the DMK leader has now admitted that only the Union Government has the authority to abolish NEET.

Vijay argued that this revelation underscores the DMK’s “deceit” during the 2021 Assembly elections when the party promised to scrap the exam if voted to power.

He expressed disappointment, saying, “How long will they deceive us in our own country?”

He accused the DMK of making false assurances as a tactic to gain votes and then failing to fulfil their promises once in power.

He emphasised that NEET was a major campaign issue in the 2021 Assembly elections, and the DMK had claimed they plan to abolish it.

Vijay questioned, “Now the DMK government says that only the Centre can cancel NEET. Isn’t this a betrayal to people who trusted and voted for the party based on its promises?”

On Friday, CM Stalin told the Tamil Nadu Assembly that NEET would have been abolished had the INDIA bloc formed the Central government. However, he admitted that only the Union Government can scrap the exam.

CM Stalin also reminded the Assembly that during the regimes of Kalaignar Karunanidhi and J. Jayalalithaa, NEET was not implemented in Tamil Nadu.

He alleged that the exam was introduced during the tenure of AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS).

Meanwhile, Vijay’s public rally at Vikkaravandi attracted over 300,000 attendees, marking a significant moment in Tamil Nadu politics.

During the event, Vijay labelled the BJP as his ideological adversary and the DMK as a political rival.

He accused the DMK of being a family-centric party that exploits the “Dravidian” identity for personal gains while condemning the BJP for engaging in “divisive politics”.
