From labourer to transport company owner – this BJP leader is famous as ‘Gold Man’

Ranchi, Dec 25 (IANS) A man laden with heavy gold jewellery caught everyone’s attention during the programme organised at the Jharkhand BJP office in Ranchi on Wednesday on the 100th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. His name is Thakur Manoj Singh and these days he has become famous as ‘Gold Man’.

From a labourer to a transport company owner to a BJP leader, this man, in fact, has come a long way. Manoj, who moved to Mumbai three decades ago as a labourer, is today counted among the biggest businessmen in Maharashtra. He has employed around 500 people in his transport company.

Thakur Manoj Singh originally hails from Kutlu, a small village in Chauparan block of Hazaribagh district in Jharkhand. Since the financial condition of his family was not good, Manoj shifted to Mumbai at the age of 18. After wandering around for many days in Mumbai, he did not get any work, so he started working as a labourer. Sometimes he would carry goods on his shoulders, and sometimes on a cart. Later he got a job in a transport company.

When he gained experience, he formed his own small transport company in 2010. This company first started sending goods from Mumbai to Rajkot. In a few years, the transport company made huge strides and today it has more than 100 trucks. Manoj is very popular among about 15 lakh people of Jharkhand living in Mumbai and nearby areas.

Manoj is also active in politics. In 2014, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He also got a chance to work with the then Education Minister and Mumbai BJP President Ashish Shelar. During this time, he proposed the formation of the Bharatiya Janata Party ‘Jharkhand Cell’ in Maharashtra on the party forum. The party accepted the proposal and ‘Jharkhand Cell’ was formed on January 7, 2021. Thakur Manoj Singh was made its president.

Thakur Manoj Singh says that about 15 lakh people from Jharkhand live in Mumbai and the surrounding areas. He is also working for their unity.

He says that Jharkhand is his birthplace and Maharashtra is his ‘karmabhoomi’. He organises a programme every year in Mumbai on behalf of the BJP’s ‘Jharkhand Cell’, in which senior leaders of Jharkhand BJP also participate.

Regarding his passion for gold jewellery, Thakur Manoj Singh says, “I have seen a lot of poverty in my childhood and always dreamt of earning money through hard work. God has blessed me with success and that is why I live a carefree lifestyle. I love gold jewellery a lot.”

Plea for verification of EVMs used in Haryana to be heard by another bench of SC

New Delhi, Dec 20 (IANS) For the second time in a row, a bench, headed by (now) Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, referred to another bench the hearing of a plea filed by Congress leaders before the Supreme Court seeking verification of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) used during the Haryana Assembly polls.

A bench of CJI Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar on Friday opined that the matter should be taken up for hearing by a bench headed by Justice Dipankar Datta in January next year.

Last week, a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and P.B. Varale opined that the plea seeking directions to the Election Commission of India (ECI) to lay down a memorandum for the checking and verification of the original burnt memory/microcontroller of the four components of the EVM should be placed before the same Bench which had passed directions on EVMs in April this year.

The Justice Nath-led Bench said that the fresh petition related to the interpretation and implementation of the previous judgment of the apex court and therefore, the registry should place the papers before the CJI, who is the master of the roster, for passing appropriate orders as to whether the petition should be listed before the previous Bench.

In order to strengthen the integrity of the election process in the country, a Bench of Justices Khanna (now CJI) and Datta, in April this year, had passed a direction for checking and verification of the burnt memory/microcontroller in 5 per cent of EVMs for any tampering or modification on a written request made by candidates securing second and third highest votes in an election.

The checking and verification exercise was directed to be undertaken by a team of engineers from the manufacturers of the EVMs, with the candidates and their representatives having the option to remain present at the time of such an exercise, it said.

The latest petition filed by Karan Singh Dalal, a former 5-time Congress MLA, said that the ECI has not issued any procedure for checking and verification of the original burnt memory/microcontroller of the four components of the EVM (Control Unit, Ballot Unit, VVPAT and Symbol Loading Unit) in terms of the SC judgment.

The plea sought directions to the poll body to lay down a memorandum for checking and verification of the original burnt memory/microcontroller of the four components of the EVM (Control Unit, Ballot Unit, VVPAT and Symbol Loading Unit).

It further sought that the above exercise be undertaken within eight weeks and be made applicable to the EVM checking and verification forms dated October 14 submitted to the ECI.

The petition, filed through advocate Neha Rathi, said that the issue raised in the petition requires to be authoritatively decided by the apex court owing to significant public importance and ramifications across the country.

“The matter affects the functioning of the democracy in the country and elections being held across the country in various states, and therefore needs to be urgently and authoritatively decided,” it said.

The absence of any procedure for verification of burnt memory for tampering shows reluctance on the part of the ECI to subject the original burnt memory microcontroller from any scrutiny whatsoever, the petition contended.

Uttarakhand CM to attend MP govt’s ‘Jan Kalyan Parv’ in Sagar today 

Bhopal, Dec 23 (IANS) Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami will visit Madhya Pradesh on Monday to attend the ‘Jan Kalyan Parv,’ a flagship event organized by the Madhya Pradesh government. He will join Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav in Sagar this evening.

As part of the event, Dhami will participate in the Ganga Aarti on the banks of the historic Lakha Banjara Lake in Sagar. The lake, redeveloped under the Smart City Project by the state’s urban development department, serves as a vital water source for the city.

The redevelopment, costing over Rs 111 crore, includes modern facilities with a focus on environmental restoration. It will be inaugurated during the ‘Jan Kalyan Parv’ celebration.

Key features of the project include the construction of three water treatment plants around the lake, which spans over 400 acres. These facilities have successfully stopped the direct flow of sewage into the lake.

“A total of 41 drains previously discharging waste water into the lake have been diverted through the installation of a 5.5 km pipeline,” a senior official from the Sagar Municipal Corporation informed IANS. The official added that the lake’s water quality was thoroughly tested, and restoration was conducted by first draining the lake completely to ensure its ecological integrity.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav will formally inaugurate the redeveloped Lakha Banjara Lake during the event, which will also feature a cultural program.

The ‘Jan Kalyan Parv’ campaign, launched by CM Yadav on December 11 to commemorate one year of his government, has involved the announcement of key projects and the inauguration of completed initiatives. The campaign is set to conclude on December 26.

After the event, both Chief Ministers, Dhami and Yadav, will travel to New Delhi for a meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah later tonight.
