‘Fuel Mayday’ call: Indigo flight with 168 passengers makes emergency landing in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, June 21 (IANS) Before the horror of the tragic Air India crash that killed over 270 people could fade, another alarming incident came to light on Saturday as an IndiGo flight carrying 168 passengers issued a ‘Fuel Mayday’ call mid-air and made an emergency landing at the Bengaluru International Airport.

The incident took place on June 19 but has come to light only recently. When contacted, IndiGo spokesperson Rashmi stated to IANS on Saturday that no official statement has been issued regarding the matter. “The pilot issued a ‘Fuel Mayday’ as the flight was rerouted from Chennai to Bengaluru International Airport due to air traffic congestion (ATC),” she said.

The pilot declared a ‘Fuel Mayday’ and communicated that the aircraft required an immediate landing. Consequently, the flight was permitted to land ahead of others, and it touched down safely, she added.

The IndiGo spokesperson explained that it is standard procedure for pilots to declare a ‘Fuel Mayday’ when requesting an emergency landing due to low fuel levels.

Sources said that IndiGo flight 6E-6764 had taken off from Guwahati Airport and was bound for Chennai International Airport. However, due to traffic congestion, the flight was diverted to Bengaluru.

The incident occurred shortly after the crash of an Air India flight that had taken off from Ahmedabad and went down following a ‘Mayday’ call from the pilots has led to concern and panic among the passengers and crew on board the IndiGo flight, sources added.

The IndiGo aircraft, reportedly running critically low on fuel, managed to land safely at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. Following the distress call, Air Traffic Control (ATC) was alerted, and emergency protocols were activated. Medical and fire response teams were deployed and stood by at the airport. The flight landed safely at 8.20 p.m., according to airport sources.

After the emergency landing, the aircraft later resumed its journey to Chennai with a different crew, sources confirmed.

Image of Indian tea hit by re-export of cheap tea: TAI

Guwahati, Jan 30 (IANS) An apex body of tea planters and traders on Thursday said that the image of Indian tea has been hit by the re-export of cheap tea imported from African and Asian nations.

The Tea Association of India (TAI) said that most of the duty-free tea that has been imported is being re-exported as ‘Indian Tea’ in violation of national law.

“Most teas being imported are cheap quality teas from origins including Iran, Vietnam and Africa. Re-export of these teas as ‘Indian tea’ is giving a bad reputation to Indian tea, undermining the price of Indian tea to the detriment of genuine exporters and image of Indian tea,” TAI President Sandeep Singhania said.

He said it decreases the price of Indian tea, negatively impacting the financial sustainability and wage-paying ability of the industry.

The TAI head said that unless steps are taken for the abolition of the re-export of imported teas as the ‘Indian Tea’, it would have disastrous consequences on prices and the tea economy which would break the financial backbone of the already struggling industry.

He said that the viability of the tea producer has been under acute stress in the absence of fair price discovery of Indian teas.

In keeping with the Prime Minister’s call for ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’, the Indian tea industry has sustained production and employment levels in spite of acute economic stress over the last decade due to stagnant prices, Singhania stated.

TAI demanded the Tea Board of India, which is empowered with greater financial and legislative power, to take steps to root out the fraud and take all necessary steps as per law to bring violators to task.

The tea planters and traders’ body also demanded to adopt a testing model as adopted by Sri Lanka for all teas imported for re-export and consider a ban on duty-free imports for re-export in bulk.

Activate and empower the North Indian Tea Council to assist the Tea Board in monitoring the quality of imports and exports of tea and initiate necessary penal action against all who have broken the law and passed off cheap low quality imported tea as Indian tea in violation of Indian law, TAI urged the government.

Assam, which produces roughly 55 per cent of India’s tea, has more than 10 lakh tea workers in the organised sector, working in about 850 big estates.

Besides, there are lakhs of small tea gardens owned by individuals. The tea belts of the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys are home to more than 60 lakh people.

After Assam, Tripura is the second largest producer of tea in the northeastern region, producing around 10 million kg of tea annually.

Tension at Tirupati gaushala as NDA, YSRCP leaders trade allegations over cow deaths

Tirupati, April 17 (IANS) Tension prevailed at Sri Venkateswara gaushala here on Thursday as leaders of the ruling coalition and the opposition YSR Congress Party had heated arguments over the alleged deaths of cows at the gaushala run by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD).

There was high drama at the gaushala since morning as MLAs of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) from the united Chittoor district and TTD member Bhanu Prakash Reddy reached the gaushala and dared YSRCP leader and former TTD chairman Bhumana Karunakar Reddy to come there and prove his allegations that many cows died at the gaushala due to negligence by the authorities.

MLAs Pulivarthi Nani, Bojjala Sudheer Reddy, Arani Srinivasulu, Kalikiri Murali Mohan and Bhanu Prakash Reddy reached the gaushala and telephoned Karunakar Reddy to come there and prove his allegation of cow deaths.

They told the YSRCP leader that instead of making baseless allegations, he should make a field visit and provide evidence.

They said they would talk to the Superintendent of Police and send him an escort to reach the gaushala. As per the suggestion by the police, Karunakar Reddy was asked to come to the gaushala with five persons.

Karunakar Reddy told the MLAs that he would come to the gaushala, and a large number of police personnel rushed to the gaushala to prevent any untoward incident. Police had already urged politicians not to come to the gaushala in groups and warned that they would deal firmly with those trying to create law and order problems.

Meanwhile, Tirupati MP M. Gurumoorthy reached the gaushala instead of Karunakar Reddy. The NDA MLAs questioned the MP why Karunakar Reddy has turned up. Gurumoorthy stated that police have placed Karunakar Reddy under house arrest. The MLAs denied the allegation. This led to a heated argument between the two sides.

Both groups tried to speak to the media. The NDA leaders were seen preventing the MP and other YSRCP men from speaking to the media.

The MLAs alleged that YSRCP, led by Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, is attacking Hinduism, adding that Karunakar Reddy should stop the drama.

The MLAs said the YSRCP leader made a false allegation that over 100 cows died at the gaushala, adding that only 34 cows have died and all records about the cause of death were available.

Meanwhile, Karunakar Reddy said that the coalition government could not take up his challenge due to fear and did not allow him and other YSRCP leaders to enter the gaushala. He reaffirmed that he stands by his version of the large-scale deaths of cows.

“A big posse of police had swarmed our house and did not allow us to go to the gaushala to prove our version. We said five members of our party, including MP Gurumoorthy, former ministers Narayanaswamy, R.K. Roja, and our MLC, would be visiting the gaushala to accept the challenge of the ruling coalition, but were not allowed,” he said.

“I still stand by what I said on the issue, and even the TTD version is that 170 cows died since June 2025, after the coalition government took office, though the figure I have is much higher,” he said.
