Hall’s injury is ‘a big blow for him and us’, says Newcastle’s Eddie Howe

Newcastle, March 7 (IANS) Head coach Eddie Howe has expressed his disappointment over Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall after he was ruled out for the remainder of the season after sustaining a foot injury. The 20-year-old will have to undergo surgery after suffering the injury during Newcastle’s loss to Liverpool in February.

This is a huge blow for Howe as the English head coach had used the services of Hall in every league game this season and was also a pivotal part in Newcastle’s run to the Carabao Cup final.

“It’s really disappointing. At this moment of the season, we have the cup final, and Lewis also has possible international experience coming up. He was in really good form and playing well, so it’s a big blow for him and us. The most important thing now is his recovery and making sure he comes back as good as he has been,” said Howe in a press conference.

“Initially, like with any player, he would have taken it quite emotionally, and you expect that because there is so much at stake. Lewis was giving everything to get to this moment and to win a trophy for this football club – that was his aim, and that was in his head. I think now he is in a much better place,” he said.

Howe also revealed that Newcastle will not be appealing the red card awarded to Anthony Gordon after he was sent off in their FA Cup defeat last Sunday for a push, as ‘there weren’t sufficient grounds to appeal the decision’. ’”It’s always a discussion point, and we discussed it with the club, with the respective people we needed to discuss it with – lawyers, etc – and we felt there wasn’t sufficient grounds to do that.

“There was no intention from Anthony. He didn’t mean to hurt anybody. But you have to look at it and ask if there is any chance of being successful, and if there is no chance, then what is the point of appealing, and Anthony understands that,” he added.

Newcastle’s decision not to appeal Anthony Gordon’s red card means he will miss the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool at Wembley on March 16. He will also sit out the Premier League trip to West Ham and the home game vs Brentford on April 2.

Bareilly, Jan 8 (IANS) Govind Sahani, a silver medallist at the 2023 Strandja Memorial International Boxing Tournament and a member of the Indian contingent for the 2023 Men’s World Boxing Championships, started his campaign at the Elite Men’s National Boxing Championship with a commanding win over Mohammad Aarif of Jammu & Kashmir on the opening day of the tournament here on Tuesday.

Close to 300 boxers are battling for supremacy in the championship, representing their respective state units in the tournament, organised by the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) in association with the Uttar Pradesh Boxing Association.

Day 1 witnessed several thrilling bouts that set the tone for the competition. Devendra Solanki of Rajasthan opened the tournament in style, defeating Donald Winston Janumala in the flyweight (47-50 kg) category. In the bantamweight (50-55 kg) division, Badal of Himachal Pradesh emerged victorious against Mizoram’s Lalhruaitluanga.

Back in the ring, the lightweight category saw Goa’s Nitesh Chawan outclass Kerala’s Mohamed Athif with a dominant 5-0 win, while Arunachal’s Ito Ado secured a hard-fought victory over Himanshu Singh. Bhanu Prakash defeated Ashish in the Welterweight (60-65 kg) category, while the (70-75 kg) weight class featured impressive wins by Nikhil Dubey and Arshpreet Singh Bhatti.

Representing their respective state units, each team features up to ten boxers in bouts structured under the World Boxing Technical & Competition Rules, with three three-minute rounds and one-minute rest periods in between rounds. A 10-points-must scoring system is in effect throughout the championship.

Team SSCB (Services) enters the tournament as two-time defending champions, having won the sixth and seventh editions of the championship.

WTA Tour: Sabalenka eyes payback with Alexandrova in her sights in Dubai

Dubai, Feb 15 (IANS) After a week of surprises at the Qatar Open, where just two Top-8 seeds progressed past the quarterfinals, the top players are looking to right the ship this week in the Dubai Tennis Championships, the draw for which was released here on Saturday.

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and No. 2 Iga Swiatek top the draw, along with No. 3 Coco Gauff and No. 4 and defending champion Jasmine Paolini. The top eight seeds have first-round byes and will be getting into action in the second round.

The draw has thrown up some intriguing clashes with a few rematches from Doha on the cards — Sabalenka could face Ekaterina Alexandrova yet again while Zheng Qinwen will look for revenge if she faces Ons Jabeur in Round 2.

Swiatek, Rybakina, and Ostapenko are in the same half of the draw for the second week in a row. In Doha, Swiatek bested Rybakina in the quarterfinals before running into Ostapenko in the semifinals.

The 2019 Dubai champion Belinda Bencic returns to the tournament for the first time since becoming a mom. She could face No.8 seed Emma Navarro in the second round. Dubai is the second WTA 1000 stop on the WTA Tour and the main draw play starts on Sunday.

In the first quarter of the draw, top-seeded Sabalenka and Ekaterina Alexandrova could meet in the second round for the second straight week. An in-form Alexandrova toppled Sabalenka in Doha, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(5) en route to her third WTA 1000 semifinal. The win improved Alexandrova’s record against Sabalenka to 4-4.

Alexandrova will open against Veronika Kudermetova in the first round, with the winner to face Sabalenka.

Along with Sabalenka, No. 5, Jessica Pegula anchors the top quarter. In Doha, Pegula was one of the three seeds to make it to the quarterfinals, along with Swiatek and Elena Rybakina. Like Sabalenka, she eventually bowed out to Alexandrova. This week, Pegula will face either Liudmila Samsonova or Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in her opener.

Last year’s surprise runner-up Anna Kalinskaya is also in the top quarter and will face Elina Svitolina in the first round. The winner will play either Clara Tauson or Rebecca Sramkova.

In the second quarter, No. 3 Coco Gauff and No. 8 Emma Navarro lead this section of the draw and are hoping to rebound from their early Doha exits. They could face difficult opening matches.

Last week, Gauff lost in straight sets to Marta Kostyuk in the second round and could face Doha finalist Amanda Anisimova this week. It would be the first meeting between the two young Americans since Anisimova stunned Gauff at 2022 Wimbledon. Abu Dhabi champion Belinda Bencic is rested after having a week off, and she could face Navarro in the second round. A champion in Dubai in 2019, Bencic will have to navigate her way past Aoi Ito in the first round.

World No. 4 and defending champion Jasmine Paolini leads the third quarter of the draw along with No. 6 seed Elena Rybakina. Paolini will open her title defense against a qualifier, while Rybakina could have to take on a red-hot Jelena Ostapenko. Unseeded again this week, Ostapenko will open against a qualifier with the winner facing Rybakina. The Latvian enjoyed an outstanding week in Doha, where she notched two Top 5 wins over Paolini and Swiatek.
