Hockey India congratulates defender Jarmanpreet Singh on completing 150 int’l caps

New Delhi, Feb 24 (IANS) Hockey India has congratulated defender Jarmanpreet Singh on the remarkable milestone of completing 150 international caps for India. Star defender achieved the feat when India faced Spain in their third match of the Hobart leg of the FIH Hockey Pro League 2025/26 in Australia on Tuesday.

Coming from a small village of Rajdhan in Amritsar district of Punjab, Jarmanpreet has established himself as India’s most dependable defender. He is known for his composure under pressure and awareness during the game.

Jarmanpreet made his senior international debut at the Men’s Hockey Champions Trophy in the Netherlands in 2018, where India finished as runners-up. One of the standout moments of his career came when he played a key role in India securing the bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Jarmanpreet has also been part of several major successes for Indian hockey over the years. He was a member of the squad that won gold at the Men’s Asian Champions Trophy in Muscat, Oman, and contributed significantly to India’s third-place finish at the Men’s Asian Champions Trophy in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He was also part of the Indian team that clinched silver at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey congratulated Jarmanpreet on the milestone and said, “Completing 150 international caps is a significant achievement and a testament to Jarmanpreet’s dedication, discipline, and consistent performances for the Indian team over the years.”

“He has grown into a reliable defender who brings stability and confidence to the backline. On behalf of Hockey India, I congratulate him on this landmark and wish him continued success as he contributes further to Indian hockey,” he added.

Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh also extended his wishes. He said, “Jarmanpreet Singh’s journey reflects perseverance and commitment at the highest level of the sport. Reaching 150 caps is a proud moment not only for him but for Indian hockey as well. His performances in major international tournaments have played an important role in the team’s achievements in recent years. We congratulate him on this milestone and look forward to many more memorable performances from him in the Indian jersey.”

Meanwhile, India had a poor start to their campaign in the Hobart leg of the FIH Pro League. They first lost to Spain by 0-2 and then suffered a 5-4 defeat to hosts Australia in a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw in their second match.

La Liga: Real Madrid win over Mallorca, extend Barca’s title wait

Madrid, May 15 (IANS) FC Barcelona will have to wait until at least Thursday night to confirm this season’s La Liga title after a goal from Real Madrid youngster Jacobo Ramon gave his side a 2-1 win at home to Mallorca on Wednesday night.

The B-team player scored with a flick over Mallorca goalkeeper Leo Roman in virtually the last second of a game that looked to be heading for a draw that would have made Barcelona champions before its game at Espanyol on Thursday.

Mallorca took the lead against an injury-hit Madrid side when Martin Valjent opened the scoring in the 11th minute.

Endrick, Jude Bellingham and Mbappe all saw efforts saved by Roman, who was Mallorca’s best player with 11 saves on the night.

Mbappe finally hit the back of the net midway through the second half, and Madrid kept up the pressure until Ramon’s goal that keeps the title race alive for at least 24 hours.

Villarreal moved level on points with fourth-placed Athletic Bilbao with an impressive win at home to Leganes.

Ayoze Perez scored on 22 and 30 minutes to give Villarreal a comfortable lead, with Nicolas Pepe making it 3-0 on the stroke of half-time.

The result means Leganes is staring relegation in the face after Alaves won 1-0 at home to Valencia.

A 79th-minute penalty from Joan Jordan after Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili was harshly judged to have fouled Santiago Mourino decided the match, and leaves Alaves four points above Leganes with two games remaining.

Leganes has to win its two remaining matches against Valladolid and Las Palmas, and hope Alaves fails to take two points from its matches against Valladolid and Osasuna.

Wednesday’s results mean Las Palmas is mathematically relegated after Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat to Sevilla, which is now safe from the drop.

Football: Barcelona to start Copa del Rey title defense away to third-tier Guadalajara

Madrid, Dec 15 (IANS) Reigning Copa del Rey holder FC Barcelona will start its title defence campaign when Hansi Flick’s side visits third-tier Guadalajara in the third round of the tournament on Tuesday night.

Barcelona would make changes to the starting 11 that faced Osasuna on Saturday, with players such as Andreas Christensen, Frenkie de Jong, Marc Casado, and Fermin Lopez all likely to start, while Marc Andre Ter-Stegen could make his first appearance following his back operation in the summer.

Robert Lewandowski was an unused substitute in Saturday’s 2-0 win, but is a doubt with a slight physical problem.

Guadalajara play in the RFEF I division and lost 3-1 to Real Madrid’s B-team on the weekend.

On Wednesday, Real Madrid travel to Talavera, who play in the same division as Guadalajara.

On Thursday, Atletico Madrid visits Atletico Baleares (the side that knocked out Espanyol in the last round), and Athletic Bilbao travels to play an Ourense side that has already beaten top-flight rivals, Oviedo and Girona.

Over the weekend, Kylian Mbappe and Rodrygo scored to give Real Madrid a 2-1 win away to Alaves on Sunday, trimming the gap to La Liga leader FC Barcelona to four points. Mbappe opened the scoring in the 24th minute after an excellent run before firing into the top corner.

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois produced a fine save to deny Pablo Ibanez on the stroke of halftime, but Carlos Vicente levelled for Alaves in the 68th minute with a goal initially ruled offside before VAR overturned the decision.

Rodrygo restored Real Madrid’s lead in the 76th minute after good work from Vinicius Jr, but then left the pitch with a calf injury.

Meanwhile, Barcelona won 2-0 at home to Osasuna on Saturday, with Raphinha scoring both goals in the last 20 minutes. His first goal came from outside the area, while the second was slotted home from close range four minutes from time.

Virat Kohli becomes fastest to 28000 runs in international cricket

Vadodara, Jan 11 (IANS) Virat Kohli completed 28000 career international runs on Sunday, when India took on New Zealand in the first ODI of the three-match series here at the Kotambi International Stadium (BCA). He became the fastest cricketer to reach this milestone, doing so in just 624 innings, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s record, who did it in 644 innings.

Before the ODI series opener, Kohli was only 25 runs short of reaching 28,000 international runs. The right-handed batter had scored 27,975 runs across 556 matches and 623 innings, maintaining a remarkable average of 52.58, with 84 centuries and 145 half-centuries.

Making his 309th ODI appearance for India, Kohli smashed New Zealand’s Adithya Ashok for a boundary off the fifth delivery of the 13th over, and with that, went past the 28000-run mark in international cricket. He also overtook Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara to become the second-highest run-scorer in the history of the sport.

During the mid-innings break, the Baroda Cricket Association honoured Kohli and Rohit Sharma with a special tribute. What made this tribute memorable was not just the gesture itself, but its unique presentation. The organisers revealed a cupboard near the boundary line, decorated with life-size images of the two cricketers.

As their names were called, the doors of the cupboard opened, and the players stepped out, eliciting laughter from the crowd and smiles from the honorees. Kohli and Rohit appeared equally amused, sharing a laugh and acknowledging the tribute.

This event was especially significant because it was the first-ever men’s ODI at Kotambi Stadium, with nearly 35,000 spectators attending. Given the limited opportunities for international matches in places like Vadodara, the organisers aimed to make this moment memorable, celebrating two players who have shaped India’s dominance in ODI cricket over the past decade and a half.
