‘India’s victory certain’, says filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar as he worships Lord Shiva at Babulnath Temple

Mumbai, Feb 15 (IANS) Team India will vanquish the Pakistani rivals easily and decisively, bringing joy to billions of Indians on the occasion of Maha Shivratri, filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar said on Sunday, ahead of the summit T20 World Cup clash between arch-rivals – India and Pakistan.

Madhur Bhandarkar told this to scribes during a visit to the city’s iconic Babulnath Temple, where he paid obeisance to Lord Shiva on Maha Shivratri. Bowing down before the deity at Babulnath Temple, also known as the “King of Mumbai,” he prayed for the well-being and happiness of everyone.

The Babulnath Temple saw a huge surge of Lord Shiva devotees since morning, who thronged the temple to offer prayers. A couple of Bollywood celebrities also visited the temple, including Madhur Bhandarkar, Ashoke Pandit and others.

Sharing his darshan experience with IANS, director Madhur Bhandarkar said, “The Babulnath Temple is revered not only in Mumbai but across the country, and it is a joyous moment for us to have the privilege of visiting it on Mahashivratri. The temple is very crowded, but everyone is praying with full devotion, and I wish everyone success and good health.”

Filmmaker Ashok Pandit, hailing from Jammu and Kashmir, said, “This festival is special for everyone, but Kashmiri Pandits’ faith is even more connected to it because we are devotees of Shiva, and visiting the Babulnath Temple brings energy and peace.”

He further said, “Whenever I visit such a religious place, I believe that God protects everyone. May God give strength to the soldiers and their families who protect the country. We always pray for our security forces, that they and their families remain happy.”

Regarding the India-Pakistan match, director Madhur Bhandarkar said that it is the festival of Mahashivratri, and the Indian team will win today, and the entire country will watch.

“The entire nation’s prayers are with Team India, and we sincerely wish that our team defeats Pakistan and emerges victorious,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Ashok Pandit looked unhappy with the India-Pakistan match.

He says that it is not right for us to play against a country that harbours and sponsors terrorism.

“The India-Pakistan match shouldn’t have happened, but now that it’s happening, we’ll win. It’s Mahashivratri, and God is in charge, so there’s no doubt we won. Our young team is very good, and victory is certain,” he said.

Cop killed as patrol vehicle overturns in pond in Bihar’s Darbhanga

Patna, Dec 17 (IANS) A police personnel was killed while two others were seriously injured when a Dial 112 police patrol vehicle overturned in a pond in the Simri Bazar police station area in Bihar’s Darbhanga district in the early hours of Tuesday.

The incident occurred at 12.30 a.m. when the police vehicle, returning from Sadhwara to Simri Bazar after patrolling, overturned into a pond while avoiding hitting a dog on the road.

The cop, identified as Shekhar Paswan (59), succumbed to his injuries in Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) while driver GK Jha, and constable Archana Kumari, were currently undergoing treatment.

Paswan was a resident of Raghepura village in the Bahadurpur police station area.

Senior police officers visited the accident site and inquired about the circumstances leading to the accident.

Jha said that he lost control over the vehicle while avoiding hitting a dog.

Jha said that while trying to save the dog, the patrolling vehicle overturned in a pond next to the road.

“After the incident, we pulled out Archana Kumari and Shekhar Paswan,” Jha said.

Paswan was rushed to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Senior officers, including the City SP, rushed to DMCH and the accident site to investigate the matter.

Simri Police Station in-charge Manish Kumar confirmed that the accident occurred while avoiding the dog and attributed the chaos at the site to dense fog and nighttime visibility issues.

“Jha and Archana Kumari are receiving treatment at DMCH. We have sent Paswan’s body for post-mortem. The family members of the deceased were informed about the tragic accident,” Kumar said.

Nifty, Sensex end Samvat 2081 on strong note with 6 pc return

New Delhi, Oct 20 (IANS) India’s stock market began Samvat 2082 with strong momentum, as the NSE Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex closed over the one-year high mark on the final day of Samvat 2081 on Monday.

In Samvat 2081, the benchmark Nifty 50 has returned around 6 per cent since last Diwali, and its one-year returns stood at 3.58 per cent. The BSE benchmark Sensex returned 3.19 per cent in the last year and around 6 per cent in Samvat 2081.

The Nifty Bank index reached a new high during today’s session, with the Nifty PSU Bank emerging as the leading sectoral gainer.

Meanwhile, the Nifty Bank delivered 12 per cent. The Nifty Midcap 100 rose by 5 per cent, whereas the Nifty Smallcap 250 dropped by 4 per cent. Nifty at 25,840 and Sensex at 84,363 have approached near the all-time highs reached in September 2024 of 26,178 and 85,571, respectively.

Sectoral performance in Samvat 2081 stood at Nifty Auto rising 16 per cent, Nifty PSU Bank increasing 14 per cent, and Nifty Metal gaining 9 per cent. Nifty IT, Nifty Energy, Nifty Realty, FMCG, and Pharma were the notable losers.

Top performers among stocks were Bajaj Finance, Maruti Suzuki, Bharat Electronics and InterGlobe Aviation, clocking returns in the range of 45 to 55 per cent.

During Samvat 2081, as many as 433 Indian firms raised over Rs 2.9 lakh crore through various routes, up from Rs 2.53 lakh crore raised by 429 firms in Samvat 2080.

Muhurat trading, the one-hour Diwali session marking the new Samvat 2082, is scheduled for October 21 from 1:45 pm to 2:45 pm.

Historically, indices have closed higher in most Muhurat sessions, with typical gains ranging from 0.4 per cent to 0.9 per cent, except for marginal dips in 2016 and 2017.

Doda police holds awareness programme on newly-amended criminal laws

Doda, Jan 20 (IANS) The Doda Police organised a comprehensive awareness programme at the Town Hall on Monday to inform the public about the recently-amended criminal laws — Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA).

The event is aimed at educating residents on the procedures and benefits of these new legislations, which came into effect on July 2024.

ASP Headquarters Doda, Shakeel ul Rehman, addressed the media, explaining that the primary goal of the session was to increase public understanding of the new laws, which are designed to simplify and improve the criminal justice process for ordinary citizens.

He emphasised that these updated laws have been tailored to address current societal needs, with a particular focus on enhancing citizen protection and legal clarity.

“The event here today is part of a larger initiative to spread awareness about these important legislative updates, which simplify the complex provisions of our older laws. These changes aim to better serve the public and ensure that the justice system is more accessible and transparent,” said ASP Shakeel ul Rehman.

During the session, supervisory officers, subdivisional police officers, and Station House Officers (SHOs) elaborated on the key aspects of the new laws, detailing their practical applications and how they would affect the community.

The officers also emphasised the importance of educating vulnerable groups, particularly students and individuals prone to cyber crimes or frauds, on how to safeguard themselves and their families.

“Our district police is committed to reaching every village, panchayat, and educational institution to organise similar awareness programmes. By doing so, we hope to engage with every segment of the community and empower people with the knowledge they need to protect themselves and contribute to a safer society,” Rehman added.

The event was part of a nationwide effort to raise awareness about the updated criminal codes, which aim to improve the conviction rate and foster better relationships between the police and the public.

Rehman also highlighted the role of modern technology in crime prevention and investigation, urging attendees to be mindful of their digital activities.

“We live in a digital age, where even the smallest action on your mobile device can serve as evidence. We need to be conscious of our online activities and use technology responsibly. The police are working diligently to leverage these advancements to enhance public safety,” he concluded.
