Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force welcomes INS Sahyadri at Sasebo

Tokyo, Oct 28 (IANS) Indian Naval Ship (INS) Sahyadri, an indigenously built Shivalik-class Guided Missile Stealth Frigate, arrived at Japan’s Sasebo on Tuesday. Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force welcomed INS Sahyadri upon arrival, Indian Embassy in Japan said in a statement on Tuesday.

INS Sahyadri commanded by Captain Rajat Kumar is participating in Japan-India Maritime Exercise- JAIMEX 25.

In a post on X, Indian Embassy in Japan stated, “INS Sahyadri arrived at Sasebo to a warm welcome ceremony by JMSDF Sasebo District. Sahyadri commanded by Capt Rajat Kumar is participating in Japan-India Maritime Exercise- JAIMEX 25.”

Commissioned in 2012, INS Sahyadri is a testament to India’s growing pursuit of indigenous defence technology and the nation’s vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India). The multi-role stealth frigate has participated in various operational deployments, bilateral and multilateral exercises.

Last week, Indian Navy and Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) personnel engaged in cross deck visits and discussed matters of common interest as part of the harbour phase of the maritime exercise JAIMEX-25. Indian Navy and JMSDF personnel engaged in other activities, including professional interactions and operational planning.

In a statement shared on October 25 on X, Indian Navy Spokesperson wrote, “Harbour Phase of the Japan India Maritime Exercise (JAIMEX 25) Indian Navy and JMSDF personnel engaged in cross deck visits and discussed matters of common interest. Other activities included professional interactions, operational planning and sharing of best practices. A combined #Yoga session was conducted, fostering unity and camaraderie.”

Earlier, INS Sahyadri’s Commanding Officer, Captain Rajat Kumar, met with Yokosuka district Chief of Staff of the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) Rear Admiral Yamaguchi Nobohisa and held talks on further enhancing the maritime cooperation.

Kumar also called on other local dignitaries, including Superintendent Kobayashi Hitoshi, Chief of Police and Rear Admiral Kondo Shuji, Chief of Coast Guard in the Yokosuka region.

During the meetings, the Commanding Officer discussed ways to enhance interoperability and professional exchanges in strengthening maritime cooperation.

INS Sahyadri also participated in the sea phase of the Japan-India Maritime Exercise (JAIMEX-25).

During the Sea Phase, INS Sahyadri operated alongside JMSDF ships Asahi, Oumi, and submarine Jinryu, engaging in a series of complex maritime drills.

The exercise featured advanced Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) manoeuvres, missile defence simulations, underway replenishment, and flying operations, reflecting a high degree of coordination and interoperability between the two navies.

In an earlier press release, Ministry of Defence stated, “The strategic partnership between India and Japan has been very robust for a long time with significant focus on defence and maritime cooperation. The Indian Navy and JMSDF have been at the forefront of this growing partnership with a shared vision of a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.”

H5N1 in cats: Chhindwara on high alert, normalcy expected after March 4

Bhopal, Feb 28 (IANS) Normalcy is expected to return after March 4 in Chhindwara town as the H5N1 virus was detected in domestic cats. The meat, chicken, and egg markets are closed and people are advised to visit government hospitals if they have any flu-like symptoms.

The entire tribal-dominated district has been on high alert since February 10. This is the first time in India that domestic cats have been detected with bird flu.

On January 10, according to a senior government official, 99 domestic cats fell sick and were brought to a veterinary hospital, later two of them detected the H5N1 virus. Although avian influenza usually does not infect humans, in rare cases, illnesses in humans from avian influenza virus infections have ranged in severity from no symptoms or mild illness to severe disease that resulted in death.

“The virus might have been transmitted from chicken to these cats fed by their caretakers,” a senior government officer said adding, “So far only local market of chicken and meat has been declared closed for 21 days.”

The H5N1 virus — commonly associated with birds — has been detected in cats. In response, the district administration has implemented precautionary measures, including a 21-day prohibition on the sale and purchase of mutton, chicken, and eggs. Meat and poultry shops in the affected areas have also been sealed.

The cats were brought to the local veterinary hospital and doctors were unable to diagnose their problem. After initial efforts to treat them, the doctors intimated the Bhopal district lab. A team of experts visited Chhindwara and collected samples.

“To investigate, samples from several cats were sent to Pune’s National Institute of Virology on January 15 and 22. By February 10, the results confirmed the presence of the H5N1 virus in two samples. Taking swift action, the administration targeted the source of the infection,” Dr HGS Pakshwar, the deputy director of animal husbandry department Chhindwara, told IANS over the telephone.

He further said that raw meat samples were collected from shops linked to the deceased cats’ diet. Bird flu traces found at these shops prompted the destruction of related meat and eggs, accompanied by a 30-day closure of the establishments.

Moreover, samples from 65 people in contact with the infected cats were also tested. “All results came back negative. Nevertheless, health officials remain vigilant, with ongoing surveillance in the area in a radius of 10 km.”

To control the spread, authorities destroyed 40,000 eggs and culled 500 hens and chickens.

Preparations underway in Rajasthan’s Jaipur for revival of Vedic-era Saraswati river

Jaipur, April 28 (IANS) In a major step towards reviving the mythological Saraswati river of the Vedic era, a high-level meeting was held at the Birla Science Research Institute in Rajasthan’s Jaipur on Monday.

The session brought together officials from the Saraswati Heritage Board of Haryana, subject matter experts, and scientists.

Rajasthan Water Resources Minister Suresh Rawat attended the meeting, along with Dhuman Singh Kirmich, Deputy Chairman of the Saraswati Heritage Board, Haryana; Mahavir Poonia, Head of the Remote Sensing Department, Birla Science Research Institute; and Bhuvan Bhaskar, Chief Engineer, Water Resources Department, Rajasthan.

Retired ISRO Director J.R. Sharma and B.K. Bhadra also joined the meeting via video conference, sharing their valuable insights and experiences.

During the meeting, Dhuman Singh Kirmich presented a detailed overview of the work undertaken by Haryana on the revival of the Vedic-era Saraswati river, showcasing the progress through a comprehensive presentation.

Expressing his views, Water Resources Minister Suresh Rawat said that the Saraswati river has historically flowed underground across western Rajasthan.

Under the leadership of Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma in collaboration with Haryana government, has initiated efforts to bring this ancient river to the surface to benefit farmers in the arid regions of the state.

Minister Rawat also noted that the Haryana government is actively working towards realising this project on the ground, and its success could significantly contribute to greening the drought-prone areas of Rajasthan.

The meeting focused on several key points, including the Rajasthan government, remains vigilant about securing interstate water resources, reviving the Saraswati river forms part of this strategic initiative and an important Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Water Resources Department of Rajasthan and the Embassy of Denmark on December 9, 2024, during the Rising Rajasthan summit.

This agreement focuses on cooperation for the revival of Saraswati’s paleochannels, aiming to boost water security and environmental sustainability in Rajasthan.

To further strengthen international cooperation, a follow-up meeting with representatives from the Embassy of Denmark is scheduled for April 29.

In addition, the involvement of the Central Ground Water Board, State Ground Water Departments, Central Arid Zone Research Institute, Jodhpur; and IIT Banaras Hindu University has been secured to advance the project.

The initiative marks a significant move towards reclaiming a historic and culturally significant river, while addressing urgent water conservation and agricultural needs in the region.

Muhammad Yunus, Shehbaz Sharif to hold talks on UNGA sidelines in US

Dhaka, Sep 18 (IANS) Bangladesh interim government’s Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus is set to meet Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during his visit to New York on September 22, according to local media reports.

Yunus and Sharif will be in New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session.

The meeting comes amid growing closeness between Dhaka and Islamabad since the ouster of the democratically elected Awami League government led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Addressing a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka, Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Touhid Hossain announced that Yunus will address the session on September 26.

He added that Yunus is also slated to hold meetings with the Prime Minister of Pakistan, the President of Finland, the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, the UN Secretary-General, and the Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Myanmar on the sidelines of the UNGA session, local media reported on Thursday.

During his visit, the Chief Advisor will be accompanied by four senior leaders from three major political parties — Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), radical Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami, and National Citizens Party (NCP), reports the country’s leading Bengali daily, Jugantor.

Relations between Dhaka and Islamabad remained strained during the 15-year rule of the former Awami League government due to issues such as the war crimes trials in Bangladesh and broader regional politics.

Key issues in Bangladesh-Pakistan relations have always included Pakistan’s role in the 1971 genocide during the Liberation War, the return of stranded assets, and compensation.

However, things have changed drastically since the formation of the interim government led by Yunus in August 2024.

Last month, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar made a two-day official visit to Dhaka, marking the first state-level visit of any Pakistani official to Bangladesh in 13 years.

During this meeting, Dar claimed that the long-standing 1971 genocide issue had been resolved twice in the past, a claim which was quickly denied by Dhaka.

Following a meeting with Foreign Affairs Advisor Hossain, Dar asserted that three unresolved matters between Islamabad and Dhaka, including the long-standing demand for an apology over the 1971 genocide, have been resolved twice in the past, according to the leading Bangladeshi media outlet, Prothom Alo.

However, rejecting the claims made by the Pakistani Foreign Minister, Hossain told reporters, “I definitely do not agree. If we had agreed, the problem would have been resolved.”

Last year, Yunus met Pakistani PM Sharif on the sidelines of the UNGA, where both leaders agreed to strengthen bilateral ties.

The two nations, historically estranged since the brutal 1971 Liberation War — wherein Pakistani forces massacred millions of people and reportedly raped hundreds of thousands of Bangladeshi women — are now demonstrating signs of rapprochement.
