Karnataka: Four from Telangana killed in road accident

Raichur, April 18 (IANS) Four people were killed and two others injured in a road accident near Amarpura in Karnataka’s Raichur district on Friday.

The deceased have been identified as 28-year-old Nagaraj, 38-year-old Somu, 36-year-old Nagabhushan and 38-year-old Murali, residents of Hindupur in Telangana.

According to police, “The victims were travelling in a goods vehicle and proceeding towards Shahapura town in Yadgir district for the sheep fair.”

Due to overspeeding, the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with the bridge’s parapet.

Due to the impact of the crash, four people travelling on the front side of the goods vehicle died on the spot.

The driver, Anand, suffered serious injuries in the incident and has been admitted to the Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS).

Another survivor in the incident has told police that they were going to purchase sheep from the fair in Shahapur town.

They had slept at 10 p.m. after having dinner, and didn’t know who was driving the vehicle.

The survivor claimed that he regained consciousness only after police gave him water. Further investigation is on.

On April 11, four people, including three women of a family, were killed in a road accident following a collision between a goods vehicle and a Road Transport Corporation bus in Yadgir district.

In a tragic incident on April 5, five people were killed and 11 others were injured after a mini-bus rammed into a parked truck in the Kalaburagi district of Karnataka in the early hours. The accident occurred near Nelogi Cross, close to Jevargi town.

The victims were travelling in a mini-bus to visit the famous Khwaja Bande Nawaz Dargah in Kalaburagi city.

In another tragic incident, four people, on their way to attend the funeral of a relative, were killed on the spot after their car was hit by a luxury Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation bus, Airavat, on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway on April 3.

Bird flu virus detected in dead crane in Rajasthan

Jaipur, Dec 21 (IANS) Bird flu has been reported in Rajasthan’s Phalodi district, following the confirmation of the virus in a dead demoiselle crane (Kurja) found in the Khichan village.

The crane’s viscera were sent for analysis to the High-Security Animal Disease Lab in Bhopal (MP) on December 19, and the test results, received on December 21, confirmed the presence of the virus.

The confirmation of the virus has raised concerns within the local administration and forest department, as the virus could pose a threat to other bird species as well. So far, seven cranes have died in the Khichan area due to the infection.

In response to the outbreak, Collector HL Atal instructed all relevant departments to remain vigilant. A joint meeting was convened with representatives from Animal Husbandry, Forest, Police, Industry, and Medical and Health departments, where officials were urged to implement preventive measures, protect the public, and carry out surveys to monitor the spread of the disease.

The Animal Husbandry Department has formed a Rapid Response Team, and the Forest Department has deployed monitoring and survey teams. Vigilant surveillance is being conducted in areas where the cranes rest and roam. Local authorities have also appealed to the public to avoid visiting migration areas of the cranes.

In accordance with the collector’s orders, a team of forest workers has been stationed at the resting spots of the Kurja birds.

Gujarat Budget: Rs 3.7 lakh crore outlay with major push for education, infrastructure, welfare

Gandhinagar, Feb 20 (IANS) Gujarat Finance Minister Kanu Desai on Thursday presented the state budget for 2025-26 in the Assembly, with a record allocation of Rs 3,70,250 crore. This marks the fourth consecutive budget under his leadership, focusing on education, infrastructure, skill development, and social welfare.

A major highlight is the Rs 59,999 crore allocation for education, reinforcing Gujarat’s commitment to modernizing its education system to align with global standards and the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.

The budget places a strong emphasis on improving education quality and accessibility. The Mission Schools of Excellence programme will receive Rs 2,914 crore, enabling structural improvements in over 25,000 classrooms. The Namo Lakshmi Yojana has been allocated Rs 1,250 crore to promote girls’ education, while Rs 782 crore will be spent under the Right to Education (RTE) Act to support students in private schools. The Namo Saraswati Vigyan Sadhana Yojana will benefit 2.5 lakh students with an allocation of Rs 250 crore, and Rs 223 crore has been earmarked for student travel concessions in State Transport (ST) buses.

The Gyan Shakti Residential Schools of Excellence will receive Rs 200 crore to enhance residential education facilities. Scholarships also see a significant push, with Rs 100 crore for the Gyan Sadhana Merit Scholarship, benefiting 75,000 students, and Rs 70 crore for the Gyan Setu Merit Scholarship, assisting 90,000 students. The recruitment of over 22,000 teachers in government and aided schools is also underway, addressing staff shortages and improving education quality. A substantial portion of the budget is dedicated to infrastructure development, with a focus on roadways, public transportation, and smart city initiatives.

Key investments include Rs 5,000 crore for road expansion projects, Rs 4,000 crore for smart cities, and Rs 3,500 crore for urban housing projects. The government aims to enhance connectivity between industrial hubs and rural areas, boosting economic growth. The healthcare sector has been allotted over Rs 40,000 crore, with plans to establish new hospitals and upgrade existing facilities.

A key initiative includes the integration of AI-based diagnostics in government hospitals to enhance patient care. The Ayushman Bharat Yojana has been allocated Rs 3,200 crore, ensuring wider healthcare coverage for low-income families.

Gujarat continues its focus on women’s empowerment with Rs 15,000 crore allocated to the schemes for nutrition, financial independence, and safety. The Namo Lakshmi Yojana and Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyam Yojana are key initiatives that encourage education and entrepreneurship among women.

The government also plans to strengthen anganwadis and child nutrition programmes, ensuring better healthcare for children in rural and urban areas.

With Gujarat emerging as an industrial hub, the budget emphasizes job creation and entrepreneurship. The state has allocated Rs 10,000 crore towards skill development and startup incentives, focusing on IT, AI, renewable energy, and manufacturing sectors. New training centres and incubation hubs will be established to equip youth with industry-ready skills. To support Gujarat’s agricultural sector, the government has set aside Rs 25,000 crore for irrigation, smart farming techniques, and crop insurance subsidies.

The Mukhyamantri Kisan Yojana will receive a major boost, ensuring better irrigation facilities and financial support for farmers. The focus is on sustainable agriculture, water conservation, and the adoption of technology-driven farming practices. Gujarat has committed Rs 12,000 crore towards solar, wind, and hydrogen power projects. The state aims to increase its solar capacity by 5,000 MW and invest in electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, making Gujarat a major player in India’s green energy transition.

Finance Minister Desai presented the budget in a red-coloured ‘pothi’ (ledger book), rather than the traditional briefcase. The pothi was adorned with Warli paintings and Ahir embroidery, symbolizing Gujarat’s rich tribal and folk artistry. The Ashoka Stambh was also prominently featured, reflecting national pride and governance.

J&K Police admired across country for professionalism, grit & determination: L-G Sinha

Srinagar, April 18 (IANS) Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor (L-G), Manoj Sinha, said on Friday that the state police is admired across the country for its professionalism, sustained grit and determination.

The L-G attended the Passing Out Parade of the 16th batch of Basic Recruit Training Course (BRTC) of Jammu and Kashmir Police at the Manigam police training centre in Ganderbal district.

L-G Sinha paid tributes to the valour of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, exhorted the young recruits to work with diligence and high professionalism to protect the motherland.

“The nation is grateful to J&K Police for the invaluable sacrifices they have made. Citizens can live peacefully and work freely because they know that our police force is standing firm in protecting the lives and combating terrorism and crime.”

“The exemplary courage of J&K Police and their supreme heroism reassures the people that the Union Territory is in safe hands.”

“Today J&K Police Force is admired across the country for its professionalism, sustained grit and determination. In the last few years, J&K Police Force, Army and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) have succeeded in crushing terrorism in the Kashmir Valley, however, terrorist incidents have increased in Jammu division, which is a matter of concern.”

“Our resolve is to make both Jammu and Kashmir divisions terrorism-free.”

“J&K Police Force will have to adapt to emerging technologies and deploy them to enhance their operational effectiveness.”

“We need a future-ready police force to effectively combat evolving terror and organised crime threats.”

“In view of the rapid changes taking place due to technology, our approach should be on data-centric policing to effectively tackle challenges, analyse crime trends and predict the pattern and make necessary changes in the investigation.”

“I am confident that apart from professional tradecraft, the life values that new recruits have imbibed at the Manigam Police Training School and ideals like courage, valour, patience, self-sacrifice and discipline they have inculcated in life will enable them to face all kinds of challenges in the future,” L-G Sinha said.

The L-G said that J&K Police, Army and CAPFs are determined to crush terror.

“In the last few years, J&K Police Force, Army and CAPFs have succeeded in crushing terrorism in the Kashmir Valley, however, terrorist incidents have increased in Jammu division, which is a matter of concern.”

Extending his best wishes to the passing out trainees, the L-G said that the skills, knowledge, and values they have gained during their training will provide a solid foundation and enhance their capabilities to discharge their duty with utmost sensitivity.

A total of 438 recruits, including 86 women, completed their rigorous training, on Friday at the Manigam Police Training School. Among them, 211 brave constables have previously served as Special Police Officers.

Zubair Ahmad Khan, Manigam Police Training School Principal, briefed about the programme and various activities conducted during the training course.

The L-G took the ceremonial salute and inspected the parade.

He also felicitated the new recruits who had excelled during their training.

An oath was administered to the new recruits for performing their duties with dedication and honesty.
