Kerala: Court intervenes in ‘fake’ voter enrolment case involving MoS Suresh Gopi

Thrissur Dec 22 (IANS) A Thrissur Judicial First Class Magistrate Court has issued notice to a Booth-Level Officer (BLO) on Monday in connection with allegations of illegal voter enrolment involving Union Minister Suresh Gopi.

The action follows a complaint filed by senior Congress leader and former MP T.N. Prathapan, alleging criminal conspiracy in the addition of votes during the last Lok Sabha elections.

Gopi won a stunning win, paving the way for the lotus to bloom in Kerala for the first time in a Lok Sabha poll.

The court directed the concerned BLO to appear in person on January 20, after finding prima facie grounds to seek clarification from election officials involved in the process.

The complaint alleges that Suresh Gopi, his brother Subhash Gopi, and other family members were illegally enrolled as voters at the Mukkatukara polling booth in the Thrissur Assembly constituency, despite allegedly not fulfilling the eligibility criteria for that location.

According to the petition, the voter enrolments were carried out using fabricated documents, amounting to a criminal conspiracy allegedly executed in collusion with the Booth-Level Officer.

Prathapan contended that the alleged irregularities undermined the integrity of the electoral process and warranted judicial scrutiny.

While examining the plea, the court observed that Suresh Gopi was not a public servant at the time of the alleged offence, as the incident pertained to the period before he assumed office as a Union Minister.

On this ground, the court noted that statutory notice under provisions applicable to public servants was not required in his case.

Consequently, the court chose to proceed by issuing notice to the BLO, who was directly responsible for the verification and processing of voter enrolment at the booth level.

The notice instructs the officer to appear before the court on January 20 and respond to the allegations.

The case comes amid heightened scrutiny of electoral rolls and voter data integrity, especially in the context of ongoing Special Intensive Revision exercises across Kerala.

Illegally transported timber in 61 trucks worth Rs 3.1 crore seized in Manipur

Imphal, May 26 (IANS) The security forces have seized 610 tons of “illegally transported” timber worth Rs 3.10 crore in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district, adjoining Myanmar, officials said on Monday.

A defence spokesman said the illegally procured timber was carried in 61 trucks, and the vehicles have also been confiscated under the Motor Vehicles Act, 2019 and the Manipur Forest Rules, 2021.

The seized timber and vehicles have been handed over to the Manipur Police in the Tengnoupal Police Station for further probe and taking legal action, he said.

The operation was carried out jointly by the Assam Rifles and the Manipur Police.

A police official separately said that the police, in coordination with the Forest Department officials, are conducting a probe to ascertain the origin of the huge consignment and where these was intended to be delivered.

Police are also trying to find out whether the timber was smuggled from neighbouring Myanmar, which shares a 398-km-long unfenced border with Manipur.

The illegal trades of numerous drugs, exotic animals, varied food products, valuables, arms and other contrabands are often taking place through the Manipur-Myanmar hilly borders.

Another official said the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has stepped up India-Myanmar border fencing work near Moreh town in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district last year. The fencing work would be done in a phase-wise manner, he said, adding that so far, 10 km border had been fenced.

The border fencing work was undertaken by ‘Project Sewak’ of the BRO, which is looking after road construction in Nagaland and Manipur. The ‘Project Sewak’ headquarters is in Nagaland’s Dimapur, the officer said.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs had earlier decided that the entire 1,643 km porous India-Myanmar borders with four northeastern states — Manipur, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland — known for the smuggling of arms, ammunition and narcotics, would be fenced at a cost of Rs 31,000 crore.

Manipur shares 398 km of border with Myanmar, while Arunachal Pradesh shares 520 km, Nagaland 215 km and Mizoram 510 km.

Various Naga, Mizo, Kuki-Zo-Hmar tribal organisations, some local political parties, along with the Nagaland and Mizoram governments, are against the India-Myanmar border fencing.

Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla recently reviewed the progress of the ongoing border fencing work along the India-Myanmar frontiers, officials said.

A Raj Bhavan official said that the Governor, at a high-level meeting, reviewed the progress of the ongoing border fencing work along Manipur, including issues pertaining to the execution of the work along the India-Myanmar border with other northeastern states.

During the meeting held at Raj Bhavan, officials of the Border Roads Task Force (BRTF) briefed the Governor on the progress and highlighted matters related to land acquisition, approach roads, fencing, security, manpower and other related issues.

The BRTF is a unit under the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). Manipur Chief Secretary Prashant Kumar Singh, Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh, Director General of Police Rajiv Singh, Commissioner (Home) N. Ashok Kumar, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Principal Secretary, Agriculture, Secretary to the Governor, and officials from Assam Rifles attended the meeting, among others. Deputy Commissioners of the five border districts also attended the review meeting via video conference.

Need to keep youth away from drugs to achieve Viksit Bharat: Mansukh Mandaviya

Varanasi, July 20 (IANS) Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya said on Sunday that a healthy body and mind can only catalyse the nation towards Viksit Bharat, emphasising on keeping the nation’s youth away from drugs.

Participating in the culmination of the 32nd edition of the Fit India Sundays, he cycled along with 3,000 youth on the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) campus in Varanasi.

He encouraged the large crowd gathered at the BHU campus to adopt an active lifestyle, saying: “A healthy body can only lead to a healthy mind and a healthy mind can only catalyse the nation towards Viksit Bharat.”

The cyclists rode through the lush green environment inside the Banaras Hindu University campus, traversing through iconic locations like Sir Sunderlal Hospital, Malviya Bhawan, Birla Hostel, IIT Chauraha, Vishwanath Temple and then returning to the starting point Amphitheatre Ground.

A sizeable crowd also took part in yoga, meditation and Zumba sessions, making the event a grand celebration of fitness, said an official statement.

The special edition of the nationwide cycling initiative was organised in partnership with several educational institutions, including the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE), DAV College Management Committee, Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti and Bal Bharati Public School.

“‘Sundays on Cycle’ has transformed into a jan andolan (mass movement). Today, all the educational institutions took part in the Nasha-Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat campaign at more than 6,000 locations across the sub-continent,” said the Union Minister.

He said, “We can only fulfil our Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a Viksit Bharat by eradicating addiction amongst youth. The government’s objective through this initiative is that the country’s youth remain fit and healthy and become vital cogs in the nation’s progress.”

During the event, the Union Minister was joined by Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Nikhil Khadse, Uttar Pradesh Sports Minister Girish Chandra Yadav, MLA from Varanasi North Ravindra Jaiswal, MLA from Pindra Varanasi Awdesh Singh, MLA from Varanasi Cantonment Saurav Srivastava, MLC Dharmendra Singh, MLC Hansraj, Divisional Commissioner of Varanasi S. Revanth Reddy’s name in National Herald chargesheet exposes corruption: KTR

Hyderabad, May 23 (IANS) Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president K. T. Rama Rao on Friday said Telangana has become an ATM for Congress, and this was corroborated by the Enforcement Directorate as it named Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy in the chargesheet in the National Herald case.

The former minister took to ‘X’ to react to the report that Revanth Reddy’s name figures in the ED chargesheet in the National Herald case.

The ED has reportedly mentioned Revanth Reddy as one of the leaders who allegedly sought donations for Young Indian (YI) and Associated Journals Limited (AJL). Though not listed as an accused, the Central agency says CM Reddy acted on instructions from senior Congress functionaries.

The ED mentioned Revanth Reddy’s name alongside late Ahmed Patel and Pawan Bansal in the donation-related findings.

The ED alleges that certain Congress leaders, including Revanth Reddy, influenced individuals to donate to YI and AJL between 2019 and 2022, suggesting that refusal could harm their political prospects.

“Telangana has become an ATM for Scamgress, and it’s been now corroborated by agencies as the ED charge sheets Telangana ‘Bag Man’ in National Herald case, he is trying his best to distract the people’s attention from his corrupt practices,” posted Rama Rao.

“The million-dollar question is whether the NDA Govt will act this time or pardon Revant Reddy as they’ve done in the case of Amrut Scam, RR Tax and Civil supplies scam,” he said.

KTR alleged that the CM’s corruption empire was exposed with the charge sheet filed by the ED, which alleged that Revanth Reddy lured people with positions to donate to the Young India organisation.

The BRS leader said payment of hundreds of crores to Congress party leaders by Revanth Reddy, even before he became the Chief Minister, has come out in the open.

Revanth Reddy’s “corruption scandal” started with hundreds of crores, and after he became the Chief Minister, it reached thousands of crores in the last year and a half, KTR said.

Rama Rao wanted to know if ED will “confine” itself to mentioning Revanth Reddy in the chargesheet or summon him for questioning to “expose the entire corruption scandal”.
