Kerala gears up for Nilambur bypoll likely in May

Thiruvananthapuram, March 28 (IANS) With the Election Commission (EC) preparing for assembly by-elections in six constituencies across India, the Nilambur Assembly constituency in Malappuram district, Kerala, is set for a fierce contest between the ruling CPI(M)-led Left and the Congress-led UDF.

The EC has directed state officials to finalise the electoral rolls, with the final list set to be published on May 5 — a strong indication that the election could be held in May, before the onset of the monsoon in June and July.

The Nilambur seat fell vacant after two-time Left-backed independent MLA P.V. Anvar resigned in January over CM Pinarayi Vijayan’s refusal to probe alleged illegal dealings of top police official M.R. Ajith Kumar and Vijayan’s political secretary P. Sasi.

Anvar, who was once a vocal critic of the UDF, has now aligned himself with the Congress-led front. He even travelled to Kolkata, where he met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and was subsequently appointed convenor of the Kerala unit of the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

However, in a surprising move, Anvar announced that he would not contest from Nilambur, a decision that has come as a relief to the UDF.

With Anvar now attacking the Left, the CPI(M) sees the Nilambur by-election as a must-win battle to assert its dominance. The party is currently scouting for a strong candidate, with sources indicating that they have shortlisted a few names.

Among the frontrunners is former Indian footballer and ex-Kerala Police official U. Sharaf Ali, who is currently the president of the Kerala Sports Council. If selected, Ali will contest as an independent backed by the CPI(M)-led Left. However, if the party opts for a political candidate, young CPI(M) leaders are also in contention.

On the UDF side, two names are gaining traction — Aryadan Shoukath, son of Congress veteran Aryadan Mohammed, who represented Nilambur for over two decades; and V.S. Joy, president of the Malappuram District Congress Committee (DCC).

In the 2016 Assembly elections, after Aryadan Mohammed retired from politics, Anvar defeated Shoukath by over 10,000 votes. In 2021, Anvar won again, defeating Congress leader V.V. Prakash by just 2,700 votes.

The BJP-led NDA has a minimal support base in Nilambur. Their vote share has dropped from 12,284 votes in 2016 to 8,595 in 2021. Given the narrow margin of victory in the last election (2,700 votes), political observers will be watching the BJP’s strategy closely, especially as both the CPI(M) and UDF have accused each other of having a secret pact with the BJP.

With high stakes for CM Vijayan, the Nilambur bypoll is shaping up to be a prestige battle, with both the Left and the UDF pulling out all stops to secure a win.

30 kg Pakistan-origin heroin seized in Punjab, one arrested

Chandigarh, Feb 14 (IANS) In an intelligence-led operation, Amritsar Rural Police have busted a cross-border smuggling racket and apprehended one drug smuggler and also recovered Pakistan-origin 30 kg heroin along with one car, Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said on Friday.

He said drones were used to transport drugs from Pakistan.

The accused was involved in large-scale heroin smuggling, and it was reported that he had recently received a consignment of drugs smuggled via drone across the border, the DGP said.

A first information report (FIR) under the NDPS Act has been registered at the Gharinda police station. Further investigations are ongoing to identify more individuals involved and to trace the origins of the smuggling network, DGP Yadav added.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has sought the intervention of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to provide financial assistance to the state for setting up special NDPS courts to check the drug menace.

Participating through video conferencing in the regional conference on ‘Drug Trafficking and National Security’ last month, the Chief Minister urged the Government of India to give one-time financial assistance for 10 years to the state to create special Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) courts and recruitment of public prosecutors along with supporting staff.

He has said 35,000 NDPS cases are pending for session trial as of January 1, adding that at the present rate of disposal, on average, a sessions court takes seven years to complete the trial of a pending case leaving aside all newly added cases.

CM Mann has said in the coming five years this average disposal time will increase from seven years (35,000 pending cases) to 11 years (55,000 pending cases). The Chief Minister has said to clear the pendency in the next five years, the state needs to create 79 new exclusive NDPS special courts and appoint 79 Public Prosecutors along with supporting staff for these NDPS Special Courts.

‘No roadmap for economic growth’: Tejashwi Yadav slams Bihar budget

Patna, March 3 (IANS) Bihar Finance Minister Samrat Chaudhary presented the 2025-26 state budget on Monday, with a total outlay of Rs 3.17 lakh crore.

However, Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav strongly criticised the budget, calling it “useless” and not in Bihar’s interest.”

He alleged that the Nitish Kumar government has no roadmap for the economic growth of the state.

Bihar lags behind in per capita income and farmers’ earnings but no concrete steps were proposed to address farmers’ issues, unemployment and poverty, which remain the highest in the country.

“In this budget, there was no mention of job creation and employment generation, paper leaks in exams continue, but no policies were introduced to prevent them and no clear strategy to stop the migration of youth and workers from Bihar,” Yadav said.

He also pointed out that there was no measure discussed in the budget to modernise the police force and improve law enforcement. Law and order concerns were completely ignored in the budget.

When asked about the government’s plans to introduce pink buses for women to promote safe public transport, Tejashwi ridiculed the plan, stating that existing Bihar Transport department buses are not running efficiently, so the new scheme is unrealistic.

He vowed to “expose the government” and highlight its failures. He accused the ruling alliance of being unconcerned about Bihar’s progress and focusing only on election gimmicks.

Tejashwi Yadav also launched a scathing attack on the Nitish Kumar-led NDA government, calling the state budget a bundle of lies and accusing the government of failing to address Bihar’s core issues.

“People of Bihar were already disappointed with this government, and now, after this budget, they have completely lost faith in it,” he said.

He accused the government of deception and making false promises. Tejashwi demanded transparency on how much the central government gives to Bihar compared to Gujarat.

He hinted at federal discrimination, suggesting that Bihar is being neglected by the BJP-led central government.

“No work is being done to control inflation and eradicate poverty. The budget does not provide any real relief for common people,” he said.

Tejashwi reiterated that his party had earlier proposed the “Mai Behan Maan Yojana” for women’s financial support. “If the government wants to copy our scheme, they are welcome to do it, but at least implement it properly,” he said.

He alleged that the NDA does not care about rules and regulations and is running the state with dictatorial arrogance.

With the Bihar Assembly elections approaching, the budget has sparked intense political debates. While the Nitish government projects it as a “historic and development-oriented budget”, the opposition sees it as an election stunt with no real impact on Bihar’s pressing issues.
