K’taka Home Minister defends permission denial for Vijay Hazare Trophy match at Chinnaswamy Stadium

Bengaluru, Dec 24 (IANS) Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara has defended the government’s decision not to allow the Vijay Hazare Trophy cricket match to be held at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru on Wednesday, Parameshwara said that the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) president and former Indian pacer Venkatesh Prasad had met both him and the Chief Minister.

“The Justice Michael D’Cunha Commission has made a set of recommendations. The report was submitted to the KSCA, and they are required to respond to those recommendations,” he said.

“However, the KSCA appears to have taken no action in this regard. When Venkatesh Prasad held a meeting, the matter was discussed. Subsequently, a high-level committee was formed. When the committee members visited the stadium, they found that not a single recommendation had been implemented. In this context, the committee decided not to grant permission to host cricket matches,” Parameshwara stated.

He further said that a total of 17 recommendations had been made to the KSCA, and permission would be granted to host matches once action is taken on these recommendations.

The Karnataka Police have denied permission for the Vijay Hazare Trophy match between Delhi and Andhra Pradesh at Chinnaswamy Stadium, citing serious safety and crowd control concerns.

The decision was taken after a thorough inspection by Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, officials from the Greater Bengaluru Authority, and the Fire Department, who raised critical gaps in venue infrastructure and emergency preparedness.

Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh stated, “The committee had gone to the stadium on Monday, on the instructions of the Home Department. Officers from various departments, including fire, Bengaluru Electricity Supply Company (Bescom), Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) and police, had inspected the stadium. As per the report from the officers, permission has not been granted for the match on Wednesday at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The committee has also given a detailed report.”

Police sources stated the stadium gates were too narrow to handle large crowds, especially with Virat Kohli expected to attend.

Notably, 11 people were killed in a stampede near the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) victory celebrations on June 4.

India’s GST collections in May surge over 16 pc to Rs 2.01 lakh crore

New Delhi, June 1 (IANS) India’s gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection for May 2025 reached Rs 2.01 lakh crore, marking a 16.4 per cent rise compared to the Rs 1.72 lakh crore collected in May 2024, according to data released by the Ministry of Finance on Sunday.

This marks the second month in a row that GST revenues have stayed above the Rs 2 lakh crore mark, indicating healthy economic activity and steady consumption growth.

In April, GST collections had touched an all-time high of Rs 2.37 lakh crore, which was a 13 per cent jump from March.

That spike was largely due to year-end financial filings and reconciliations. However, the strong numbers in May suggest that the momentum is continuing beyond seasonal factors.

Net GST revenue — which includes refunds — also grew significantly, rising by over 20 per cent to Rs 1.73 lakh crore.

Domestic GST collections increased by 13 per cent, while revenue from imports rose sharply by 25.7 per cent.

Meanwhile, India’s overall economy is also showing signs of stable growth. Data released on May 30 showed that the country achieved its growth target of 6.5 per cent for the financial year 2024.

The economy expanded by 7.4 per cent in the January to March quarter, bouncing back strongly from earlier slowdowns.

Consumption, a key driver of growth, also improved over the year. After growing by 5.6 per cent in the previous financial year, consumption has picked up again.

In April, consumer durable goods, such as appliances and electronics, grew by 6.4 per cent, slightly lower than the 6.9 per cent growth in March.

Meanwhile, in April, the GST collections had surged to a record high of Rs 2.37 lakh crore, which was a 12.6 per cent increase from Rs 2.10 lakh crore in the same month the previous year.

The increase in GST collections in the previous month (April) had been driven by a higher level of economic activity and improved compliance, a senior official had said.

Delhi Budget: CM Rekha Gupta seeks suggestions from women, students

New Delhi, March 10 (IANS) Reliving her days of student activism, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday interacted with ABPV women activists and students to seek their suggestions for the Viksit Delhi Budget 2025 which she is scheduled to present in the Assembly between March 24 and 26.

“I was reminded of my days as an ABVP activist,” she said after attending an interactive session with women students of Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) at an event in Central Delhi.

“While interacting with them, I sought suggestions for Delhi’s Budget 2025-26. I even asked them about their vision for the city and their expectations from the Budget,” CM Gupta said after the event, highlighting education, health, security and development as her government’s focus.

Earlier on Sunday, the Chief Minister interacted with women and sought their suggestions for the Budget. She hailed the spirit of city women and called them engines of development while assuring them that she would take care of their well-being.

Addressing women at an event to mark International Women’s Day in central Delhi, the Delhi CM said women should become role models for others.

“In Delhi, I assure that our government will provide them four basic facilities – education, health, security and development,” she said.

On Friday, the CM approved a scheme for providing Rs 2,500 monthly financial assistance to eligible women under Mahila Samriddhi Yojana and allocated Rs 5,100 crore for one financial year.

The scheme was approved by a Cabinet meeting chaired by CM Gupta and announced by BJP National President J.P. Nadda during an event to mark International Women’s Day at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

“I congratulate PM Modi and CM Rekha Gupta that before coming to this event, her Cabinet approved the Rs 2,500 per month Mahila Samriddhi Yojana for women in Delhi,” he said.

Nadda also reiterated PM Modi’s promise to promote women-led development and enlisted the decisions by CM Gupta to improve Delhi women’s security by increasing the number of CCTV cameras, raising the number of Pink PCR vans with women staff, increasing the number of pink toilets and starting one-stop centres for women for filing complaints and legal aid.

Trinamool leader shot at in West Bengal, critical

Kolkata, Jan 25 (IANS) A local Trinamool Congress leader was shot at from close range in broad daylight on Saturday afternoon at Nodakhali in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district and his health condition is stated to be critical.

The critically injured local Trinamool Congress leader has been identified as Krishnapada Mondal.

He was shot at from close range while he was travelling by his motorcycle in the Nodakhali area.

According to eyewitnesses, three unknown assailants, all of whom were probably outsiders, shot at Mondal from a close range and escaped.

He was rushed to a hospital in Kolkata where he is currently undergoing treatment.

The police are investigating whether the reason for the attack on the ruling party leader was political or personal. Alerts have been used at the local police station about the three assailants who shot at Mondal.

However, a section of the local people, said that infighting in the ruling party in the area could be a reason behind the attack on Mondal.

Incidentally, Nodakhali comes under the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency in South 24 Parganas district, represented by Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.

This is the third incident in the current month that a local Trinamool Congress leader has been shot at in broad daylight on the road. The first two incidents occurred at Madah district in the northern sector of West Bengal.

In the first week of this month, Trinamool Congress councillor from English Bazar Municipality in Malda district Dulal Sakar a.k.a. Babla was shot dead in a similar fashion on the road.

Infighting in the state’s ruling party in the district being the main reason behind the murder became evident with Trinamool Congress’ Malda twin president and the party’s chief of Hindi cell for the entire district Narendra Nath Tiwari was identified and arrested as the main brain behind the assassination.

On January 14, local Trinamool Congress leader Hasan Sheikh was shot dead at an administrative programme at Kaliachak also in Malda district.
