Locals of Surat, Gwalior hail PM Modi’s 11 ‘Bemisal’ years in office

New Delhi, June 9 (IANS) As the Narendra Modi-led government completed 11 years in office, residents of Surat in Gujarat and Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, on Monday, praised the Prime Minister’s leadership, calling his tenure the “best so far and Bemisal (umatched)”.

Locals expressed their happiness and said the government had delivered on key promises, directly benefitting citizens through various welfare schemes.

From economic reforms to women empowerment, and from national security to international diplomacy, people across sectors lauded the PM Modi-led government’s achievements.

The abrogation of Article 370, resolution of complex issues like the Waqf Board, the construction of the Ram Mandir, and strong military responses like Operation Sindoor were frequently cited as defining milestones.

IANS spoke to locals of Surat where they spoke about PM Modi’s leadership.

Narendra Mishra, an automobile businessman from Surat, said, “When PM Modi came to power, he did wonderful work for everyone. One of his most admirable decisions was the implementation of GST, which streamlined businesses across the country.”

Dharmesh Gami, a local social worker, said, “There isn’t a single state that hasn’t seen development under PM Modi’s leadership. Operation Sindoor and the valour shown by the Indian Armed Forces prove how far we’ve come. Pakistan, which used to create constant trouble, is now silent. Issues like Triple Talaq, the Waqf Amendment Act, and Ram Mandir were handled decisively. He has elevated India’s status on the global stage.”

Parikshit Patel, a bank employee, echoed similar sentiments.

“PM Modi has done a great job over these 11 years. India has progressed in every sector and gained respect internationally under his leadership.”

Ranjit Mishra, a businessman, added, “The PM Modi-led government is truly ‘Bemisal’. Operation Sindoor sent a strong message to Pakistan. And the tax reforms for the middle class have been beneficial. Most importantly, government schemes are now reaching the common man.”

IANS also spoke to residents of Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior, where sentiments were equally supportive.

Many first-time voters expressed admiration for PM Modi’s leadership and vision for the country.

Jagdish, a local resident, said, “PM Modi is doing excellent work across all levels. He has especially done a lot for women. There are so many achievements that it’s hard to count them all.”

Yash, a first-time voter, remarked, “I will vote for someone who works for development. PM Modi is the most lovable Prime Minister of India. I believe the country will continue progressing under his leadership.”

Another resident, Devesh, said, “His tenure has been the best. What impressed me most was Operation Sindoor, where India gave a befitting reply to Pakistan. PM Modi has also strengthened diplomatic ties with many foreign nations.”

Arunachal SHGs jointly manage a corpus pool of inspiring Rs 300 cr: CM Khandu

Itanagar, Jan 14 (IANS) Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Monday said that currently, state Self Help Groups (SHGs) and federations collectively manage a corpus pool of about Rs 300 crore, which, he said, is a testament to the scale and impact of the collective effort within small but difficult terrains of the state.

While addressing the SARAS fair here, the Chief Minister expressed happiness that the effort towards making SHG members into Lakhpati households is flowing down in a systemic manner. He said that in the first phase of the certification, Arunachal has been able to certify over 1600 ‘Lakhpati Didis’ in the state.

“This success is a result of their hard work, resilience, and diversified livelihood activities, such as agriculture, horticulture, livestock farming, and small enterprises,” Khandu said while appreciating the dedication of the Arunachal State Rural Livelihood Mission (ArSRLM) officials engaged in handholding the SHGs.

The Chief Minister said that 29,000 potential SHG members were identified whose capacity building has started so as to make them ‘Lakhpati Didi’. These individual and collective achievements reflect the power of unity and the entrepreneurial spirit of our women, he said, adding that this fair is in line with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has been promoting the concept of “Vocal for Local” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat”.

“India will develop when the North East develops. North East will develop when Arunachal develops. Arunachal will develop when its villages develop. Villages will develop when women of the villages develop,” the Chief Minister observed.

The SARAS Fair, organised annually by the state government, is a bridge connecting talented rural artisans with national and international markets. The Fair serves as a platform to showcase the rich cultural heritage, handicrafts, handlooms, and organic products of villages while also promoting sustainable livelihoods, where SHGs from across the state put up their products for display and sale.

Khandu reiterated that the state government is committed to empowering the SHGs by providing them with access to training, credit, and market linkages. “Their participation in the SARAS Fair is a reflection of their aspirations and achievements, and I take this opportunity to salute their indomitable spirit,” he said.

On the occasion, the Chief Minister launched the Handloom, Handicraft, Crochet, Knitting and Embroidery Cluster Initiative under ArSRLM to support rural artisans engaged in weaving, crochet, knitting, embroidery, and handicrafts. Under this initiative, Master Trainers will be developed across the state through specialised Design Development Training programs.

To further strengthen these clusters, each unit will receive seed capital support of Rs 2 lakh per cluster. This initiative aims to enhance skills of rural artisans by providing them with advanced training and design expertise, support sustainable livelihoods and create income-generating opportunities for women and marginalised communities and preserve and promote the traditional arts and crafts of Arunachal Pradesh while integrating them with contemporary market demands.

Khandu informed that to provide market links to farmers, the state government, through the state marketing board, has signed agreements with the Indian Army and ITBP posted in Arunachal Pradesh for supply of fresh vegetables, fruits and other food products.

He said that as the system gets smoothened and well-oiled, this would become a huge marketing place for locally produced products. SHGs from Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Goa and Jharkhand are also participating in the SARAS Fair.

Protests break out in Bengal following school job row

Kolkata, April 9 (IANS) Massive protests have erupted in different districts of West Bengal on Wednesday over the cancellation of 25,753 teaching and non-teaching jobs in state-run schools following an order of the Supreme Court (SC) last week cancelling West Bengal School Service Commission’s (WBSSC) panel for 2016.

Sacked employees assembled in different offices associated with the state Education Department, demanding immediate action on the part of the state government and WBSSC in segregating the “genuine” candidates from the “tainted” ones getting jobs against payment of money.

At places, especially at Kasba in South Kolkata, the police had to resort to massive lathi-charge to dispel the sacked employees assembled in front of the offices of the district inspectors of schools.

Last week, the SC upheld a previous order of the Calcutta High Court, cancelling the panel of 25,753 teaching and non-teaching jobs on the grounds that the state government and the commission segregate the “genuine” candidates from the “tainted” ones.

On Wednesday, the sacked employees assembled in front of the office of the district inspector of schools at the Kasba, where a huge police contingent was present to prevent the agitators from entering the office.

The main gate of the office building was locked, and barricades were raised in front of the office. However, after some time, the sacked employees removed the barricades, broke the lock, and barged into the office.

Thereafter, scuffles between the cops and the protestors broke out, and the police had to resort to a massive lathi-charge to disperse the employees.

Some of the protesters have also received injuries following the massive lathi-charge.

“We are genuine candidates. So we are forced to hit the street and the state government is suppressing our movement by using force,” said an injured protester.

At Chinsurah in Hooghly district, a group of protesting employees marched to the office of the district inspector of schools and, after protesting there for some time, locked the office from the outside.

A similar incident has been reported from Siliguri in the Darjeeling district, where the protesters locked the office of the district inspector of schools from the outside.

Another group of protesters blocked the busy G.T. Road at Kolkata-adjacent Howrah district, resulting in massive traffic congestion.

At the time of filing this report, similar protests, scuffles between cops and protesters and police lathi-charge have surfaced from other districts like Malda, South Dinajpur. East Midnapore and West Midnapore, among others.

EPFO adds 16.1 lakh members in February as employment rises

New Delhi, April 21 (IANS) The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) on Monday announced a net addition of 16.10 lakh members in February this year. The year-on-year analysis reveals a growth of 3.99 per cent in net payroll additions compared to the same month last year, reflecting increased employment opportunities and heightened awareness of employee benefits, bolstered by the EPFO’s effective outreach initiatives, according to an official statement.

The figures further showed that the EPFO enrolled around 7.39 lakh new subscribers in February 2025, with a dominance of the young 18-25 age group. As many as 4.27 lakh new subscribers were added in this age group, constituting a significant 57.71 per cent of the total new subscribers added in the month. This is in consonance with the earlier trend, which indicates that most individuals joining the organised workforce are youth, getting into their first jobs.

Further, the net payroll addition for the age group 18-25 for February 2025 is approximately 6.78 lakh. This represents a growth of 3.01 per cent from the same month last year, the statement said.

Approximately 13.18 lakh members, who had exited earlier, rejoined the EPFO in February 2025. This figure depicts a significant 11.85 per cent year-over-year growth compared to February 2024. These members switched their jobs and re-joined the establishments covered under the ambit of the EPFO and opted to transfer their accumulations instead of applying for final settlement, thus safeguarding long-term financial well-being and extending their social security protection, the statement said.

Around 2.08 lakhs new female subscribers joined EPFO in February 2025. It depicts year-over-year growth of 1.26 per cent compared to the same month of the previous year.

Further, the net female payroll addition during the month stood at around 3.37 lakh, a significant year-over-year growth of 9.23 per cent compared to February 2024. The growth in female member additions is indicative of a broader shift towards a more inclusive and diverse workforce, according to the statement.

State-wise analysis of payroll data denotes that the top five states/UTs constitute around 59.75 per cent of net payroll addition, adding a total of around 9.62 lakh net payroll during the month. Of all the states, Maharashtra leads all the states with the addition of 20.9 per cent of net payroll during the month. The states/UTs of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat, Haryana, Delhi, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh individually added more than 5 per cent of the total net payroll during the month.
