Made in India, equipped with modern facilities: Loco Pilot on new Patliputra-Gorakhpur Vande Bharat train

New Delhi, June 20 (IANS) Bringing major relief and excitement to rail passengers in Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh, a new Vande Bharat Express train connecting Patna to Gorakhpur was inaugurated on Friday.

The high-speed train was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Bihar, marking a significant milestone in the region’s railway infrastructure development.

Loco pilot Jayant Kumar Sinha, who will be at the helm of the new Vande Bharat Express, shared his enthusiasm about the service, calling it a landmark initiative in India’s modern rail journey.

“This is a Made in India train, fully equipped with all modern facilities. There is no possibility of an accident, and it is 100 per cent safe,” he said.

“It is a high-speed train that will initially operate at 110 km/h. In the future, its speed will increase to 130-140 km/h. It connects Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, specifically linking the Champaran and Tirhut regions in Bihar and key areas of Uttar Pradesh as well,” he added.

The new train service is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Patliputra and Gorakhpur by 4 to 5 hours, allowing passengers to cover long distances more efficiently and comfortably. The train will run via Muzaffarpur and Bettiah, improving connectivity for North Bihar and adjoining regions of Uttar Pradesh.

Jayant Kumar Sinha further described the train as a symbol of technological advancement and public convenience: “This train is not just a new transport service, it’s the beginning of a new era in rail travel. Like the ‘Adarniya Shri Ram Vande Bharat’ train, this too will be a proud initiative serving our people with speed, safety, and reliability.”

In addition to the launch of the Patliputra-Gorakhpur Vande Bharat Express, PM Modi also inaugurated the Vaishali-Deoria railway line project, constructed at a cost of over Rs 400 crore. The line is expected to further boost regional rail connectivity and economic development in the region.

This move aligns with the Central government’s broader vision of modernising Indian Railways through the expansion of semi-high-speed Vande Bharat trains, known for their state-of-the-art features and travel efficiency.

Covid-19: Current infection wave unlikely to cause higher burden on hospitals, say doctors

New Delhi, June 2 (IANS) Amid nearly 4,000 active cases of Covid-19 disease in the country, health experts on Monday assured that there is no need to panic as the current infection wave is unlikely to cause a higher burden on hospitals.

According to the latest update, shared by the Ministry of Health, there are 3,961 active Covid cases. The number of deaths across multiple states, since January 1, 2025, surged to 32. Meanwhile, 2,188 patients were discharged or migrated in the last 24 hours, indicating an improvement in recovery.

“It is highly unlikely that the current infection can cause a higher burden on the hospitals. Hence, there is no need to panic. However, the sentinel surveillance system needs to be strengthened in order to catch the outbreak in the earlier phase,” Dr Harshal R. Salve, Additional Professor at the Centre for Community Medicine at AIIMS, New Delhi, told IANS.

Kerala (1,435), Maharashtra (506), Delhi (483), Gujarat (338), and West Bengal (331) have reported the highest number of cases so far.

This fresh wave has been caused by two new coronavirus variants, NB.1.8.1 and LF.7, mutations of the Omicron offspring JN.1 variant. Both were found in India, as per data from the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), set up under the Ministry of Health.

“While Covid cases are testing positive again, there is absolutely no need to panic. It is due to a JN.1 variant that is reportedly reappearing,” Dr. S.K. Chaudhary, Chief Superintendent of Motilal Nehru Joint Hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj, told IANS.

Salve noted that severe infections due to these variants are unlikely, as the majority of the population possesses natural immunity.

“Symptoms are similar to earlier Covid infections. As the majority population has already been infected earlier, they possess natural immunity, which protects them from severe manifestation of the disease,” he noted.

However, “this sub-variety has high transmissibility. Patients with comorbidity and the elderly need to wear N95 masks for protection from transmission. In general, cough hygiene and hand washing need to be practised”, the expert added.

NIA appeals people to share info on Pahalgam terror attack

Jammu, May 7 (IANS) The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday appealed to all tourists, visitors and local people who might have information, photographs or videos related to the Pahalgam terror attack to contact the agency.

The agency has already taken possession of a sizeable number of photographs and videos showing various aspects of the attack and is examining them.

The NIA has decided to scale up its efforts to ensure that no useful information or evidence is missed during the investigation.

In an appeal issued on Wednesday, the NIA has urged all such people to call up the agency on mobile number 9654958816 and/or on landline number 01124368800 and provide their personal details and also the details of the kind of information or inputs they want to share.

A senior NIA official will then connect with the caller and arrange for the relevant information/photos/videos.

NIA, which is officially in charge of the investigation into the attack, is keen to examine all such information, photographs and videos in thorough detail to search for any possible clues to the assailants and their modus operandi.

Tourists and others might have, advertently or inadvertently, seen, heard or clicked some relevant detail that could help NIA to unravel the conspiracy behind the unprecedented targeted attack on tourists in Kashmir.

Several photographs and videos are in circulation on various social media platforms after the terrorist attack that killed 26 tourists and left several injured on April 22.

The anti-terror agency plans to minutely go through all these, along with any other information that might be in possession of those who were in the area on or before the fateful day.

NIA teams have been camping in Pahalgam to examine the attack site for evidence and have also been questioning the witnesses of the horrendous crime.

Citing govt ‘failures’, Oppn boycotts Maha CM’s tea party

Mumbai, March 2 (IANS) The Maha Vikas Aghadi on Sunday unanimously decided to boycott the customary tea party convened by the Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on the eve of Budget session of the State Legislature, citing the MahaYuti government’s failure at all fronts.

The decision was taken during the meeting convened at the residence of the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the State Council, Ambadas Danve.

The four-week Budget session will start from Monday.

Danve told reporters: “The Opposition in its letter addressed to the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said if they will attend the customary tea meeting it will be an insult to the farmers, workers and common citizens. Therefore, Opposition has decided to boycott it. The government should clarify its stand on farmers, working class and common citizens in the State Legislature. The Opposition’s decision is a symbolic gesture of anger against the state government prevailing among the people of the state.”

Danve, who was accompanied by Shiv Sena-UBT legislators Aaditya Thackeray, Bhaskar Jadhav and Sunil Prabhu, NCP-SP legislator Jitendra Awhad and Congress legislator Bhai Jagtap, alleged that the law and order situation in the state has worsened amid rising crimes against women, saying that the state government is not serious to curb such incidents.

Aaditya Thackeray criticised the state government over the molestation of Union Minister of State Raksha Khadse’s daughter in Jalgaon district targeting the Chief Minister Fadnavis, who is also the state Home Minister.

“Fadnavis has been the Home Minister for 10 years except for the two-and-a-half years of Maha Vikas Aghadi government. The hands of the police are tied, criminals are given exemption which is causing such incidents,” he claimed.

He asked several questions in his tirade against the state government.

“Why is action not taken against those in power but only against those not in power? You were elected on EVM, will you fulfill your promise? Will you increase your beloved sister’s money or not?” he asked.

Aaditya Thackeray said that President Droupadi Murmu has sent back the Shakti Act which was passed by the State Legislature to curb crimes against women with a provision of death penalty.

He accused the MahaYuti government of rising internal disputes impacting the governance in the state.

Danve claimed that Walmik Karad, the main accused in the murder of Massajog sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh, has been given a VIP treatment in the jail.

Despite alcohol ban in the Maoist-affected Gadchiroli and Wardha districts, 7,000 cases have been registered, he said.

Danve alleged that there has been a scam in the Agriculture department while the Rs 3,000 crore-plus tender issued during the term of former Public Health Minister Tanaji Sawant has been suspended by Chief Minister Fadnavis.

Besides, the tender for the procurement of 1,310 state transport buses awarded hastily ahead of Assembly election during former CM Eknath Shinde-led government has also been suspended, he said.

Danve hit out at the state government over the distress among farmers and its inaction to help them amid declining prices of soybean.
