Maharashtra cop arrested for demanding sexual favours from woman in custody

Akola (Maharashtra), April 2 (IANS) A police officer posted at the Civil Lines police station in Maharashtra’s Akola has been accused of demanding sexual favours from a woman while she was in police custody, triggering outrage and swift departmental action.

The woman had been arrested by the cyber police for allegedly defrauding another individual of Rs 80 lakh on the pretext of providing a job. After being produced before a court, she was remanded to four days of police custody and was subsequently lodged at the Civil Lines police station in Akola city.

During her custody, the woman alleged that an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) demanded physical relations from her. She reported the incident to a female police officer, who escalated the matter to senior officials. Upon learning of the allegations, a senior officer immediately visited the police station and reprimanded the accused ASI.

Following this, the woman formally lodged a complaint against the officer. Acting on her complaint, the Civil Lines police registered a case against the accused. The incident sparked concern and protests at various levels, given the seriousness of the allegations.

The police department took prompt action by suspending the accused officer. A search operation was launched, and later that night, the local crime branch successfully arrested the ASI.

In a separate but similar incident earlier on March 21, a police Constable in Aligarh was suspended and booked for allegedly making inappropriate demands to a 25-year-old rape survivor. According to police, the Constable, identified as Imran Khan and posted at the Quarsi police station, allegedly told the survivor that her complaint would only be acted upon if she met him in a hotel room and engaged in sexual relations.

The survivor recorded phone conversations in which the Constable allegedly made explicit remarks and promises of legal assistance in exchange for sexual favours. She later approached senior police officials with the evidence.

Following her complaint, Senior Superintendent of Police, Neeraj Kumar Jadaun, ordered the Constable’s suspension and directed that an FIR be registered against him.

Light intensity earthquake occurs in J&K

Srinagar, Feb 23 (IANS) A light-intensity earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale occurred in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday although no report of any casualty or damage to property was received from anywhere, authorities said.

Data released by the National Center for Seismology said that an earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale occurred in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday at 8:47 p.m.

The coordinates of the earthquake are Latitude 34.28 degrees north and Longitude 74 degrees east.

It occurred 10 km inside the earth and its epicentre was in the Kupwara area of Jammu and Kashmir.

Seismologically Kashmir Valley is located in a highly sensitive zone and is prone to earthquakes.

Earthquakes have wrought havoc in Kashmir in the past.

On October 8, 2005, an earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale killed more than 80,000 people on two sides of the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.

Muzaffarabad town in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir was razed to rubble by the 2005 earthquake.

A lot of damage was caused in Uri town of Baramulla district as well.

The impact of that earthquake was so serious that people in the entire Valley ran out of their homes as homes and buildings shook.

Aftershocks continued for more than a month after the 2005 earthquake.

It was after that devastating earthquake that people in Kashmir started planning for homes and buildings that could sustain shocks in the future.

During the last five to six years, earthquakes have been occurring with irregular periodicity in the Chenab Valley region of Jammu and Kashmir in the Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban districts.

Although no human casualties have been reported during the Chenab Valley earthquakes so far, still there have been incidents of the earth caving in causing irreparable damage to homes and buildings.

In several cases, cracks have developed in residential buildings and government structures making these unfit for human occupation.

Telangana Police seize drugs valued at Rs 3 crore in Mumbai

Hyderabad, Oct 10 (IANS) Telangana’s Eagle Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement (EAGLE) has seized Rs 3 crore from a hawala establishment allegedly used for laundering drug proceeds, officials said on Friday.

The special anti-drugs task force seized the money in an operation in Mumbai and also arrested Dargaram Rataji Prajapati, a key accused in a nationwide hawala network used to channel proceeds of drug trafficking for Nigerian cartels, EAGLE said here.

Prajapati had earlier managed to escape during a raid on Bharat Kumar Chaganlal and Company in Mumbai.

The investigations revealed that the firm was being used as a front to move drug funds through hawala channels on behalf of foreign drug syndicates.

A special team of EAGLE led by Inspector K. Praveen Kumar arrested Prajapati.

The operation was carried out as part of the investigation into an international drug money laundering racket that was busted, with the arrest of a foreign national Onyeisi Esomchi Kenneth alias Maxwell alias Emmanuel Bediako.

He was operating in India using four Nigerian passports and one Ghanian passport.

As of now, 25 people have been arrested in connection with the hawala drug network and a total of Rs 3.084 crore seized.

Prajapati told EAGLE officials during interrogation that hawala racket is operated through multiple cities with offices at Jhaveri Chambers in Ahmedabad’s Ratnapur, managed by Devji and Dilip; and Bharat Kumar Chaganlal and Company in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk, managed by Mukesh.

Agents identified as Uttam Singh alias Jaswant, Kheema Ram alias Raju alias Rajlaxmi of Goa and Chetan Mavji of Mumbai were responsible for collecting hawala money from Nigerian nationals engaged in drug trafficking.

Meanwhile, Rachakonda police have busted an inter-state drug peddling racket and seized drugs with Rs 1 crore.

In a joint operation, the sleuths of the Special Operations Team (SOT) in Malkajgiri along with the Keesara Police, apprehended one inter-state drug peddler involved in the transportation of opium and poppy straw.

They seized seven kg opium, two kg poppy straw and one mobile phone, all worth Rs 1 crore.

The police arrested Lokesh Baret, 26, a native of Rajasthan, while another accused Jagadish Gujjar, hailing from Rajasthan, was absconding.

The accused were procuring, transporting and selling opium to Hyderabad, Chennai and its neighbouring areas.

Lokesh boarded a train from Rajasthan with opium and poppy straw on October 8.

He was arrested on Friday when he arrived in Hyderabad and reached near Kundanpally ORR Rotary in the limits of Keesara police station for handing over the opium and poppy straw to the unknown receiver.

Bengal areas under intelligence surveillance after three JMB activists arrested

Kolkata, May 11 (IANS) After the arrest of three Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) activists in West Bengal in the last two days, the intelligence agencies, both central and state, have increased surveillance in pockets that have records of the presence of sleeper cells of various fundamentalist and terrorist groups.

Sources aware of the development said that these pockets have been kept under special surveillance, including those districts that share International Borders with Bangladesh, with additional focus on the two minority-dominated Murshidabad and Malda.

The sources added that apart from that, certain other minority-dominated pockets in districts like Birbhum, East Burdwan, and Hooghly districts have also been brought under this special surveillance.

Of the three JMB associates who were arrested by the sleuths of the special task force (STF) of West Bengal, two, namely Aazmal Hossain and Saheb Ali Khan, were arrested on Friday from Nalhati in Birbhum district, and both were residents of the same district. On interrogating them, the investigating officials came to know of their associate, Abasuddin Molla, who was arrested on Saturday from his residence at Patra village under Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.

Similarly, some pockets in East Burdwan district, especially the minority-dominated ones, have been kept under surveillance following a blast at Khagragarh in the same district in October 2014. The police seized 55 improvised explosive devices, RDX, wrist watch dials, and SIM cards from that house. Investigation revealed that JMB was the mastermind behind assembling huge explosives at that house.

Investigation further revealed the presence of JMB sleeper cells at Khagragarh and its adjacent pockets. Of the 19 people convicted in the case, four were Bangladeshi residents and hardcore activists.

Similarly, during the last few years, there have been several instances of arrests of several sleeper cell members of different fundamentalist and terrorist groups in minority-dominated pockets in the Hooghly district, following which these pockets have also been brought under special surveillance.

Recently, after the Union Home Ministry received information from intelligence agencies about the alleged role of illegal Bangladeshi intruders behind the violence and vandalism in the minority-dominated Murshidabad district during protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act.

The names of three Bangladesh-based fundamentalist groups, namely JMB, Hizb-ut-Tahrir (HUT), and Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), surfaced then.
