Middle East hosts over 1.7 million Nepalis: Nepal’s Foreign Ministry

Kathmandu, March 1 (IANS) The Nepali government said on Sunday that more than 1.7 million Nepalis are residing in 12 Middle Eastern countries, where their safety is at stake amid the ongoing US-Iran war.

The safety of Nepali citizens has become a major concern as Iran launched retaliatory attacks on Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Bahrain following joint strikes by the US and Israel on Iran on Saturday.

These Gulf nations host the majority of Nepali migrant workers, whose remittances are a crucial lifeline for Nepal’s economy.

Unveiling details of Nepalis residing in Middle Eastern countries at a press conference on Sunday, Ram Kaji Khadka, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that around 1,729,288 Nepalis are legally residing in 12 countries across the region.

According to the Ministry, the UAE hosts the largest number of Nepalis, with around 700,000 nationals, followed by Saudi Arabia with 384,865 and Qatar with 357,913.

Similarly, there are 175,000 Nepalis in Kuwait, 30,000 in Iraq, 28,000 in Bahrain, 25,000 in Oman, 17,000 in Cyprus, 6,500 in Israel, 1,500 in Lebanon, 500 in Egypt and just six in Iran.

“Out of the total 10 Nepalis who had been residing in Iran, four have already returned to Nepal, while the remaining six are preparing to leave,” Khadka said.

He said the highest priority of the Nepali government at present is ensuring the safety of its citizens in the Middle East.

“So far, we have not received any reports of Nepali citizens being harmed during this conflict,” Khadka said, who leads the Central Asia, West Asia and Africa Division at Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He added that travel advisories have been issued, urging Nepali citizens in the region to remain indoors and stay alert.

“We have also created a WhatsApp coordination group involving officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Nepali embassies in West Asia,” he said.

Ministry officials said the government would also consider coordination with neighboring countries if evacuation becomes necessary.

During the 12-day war between Israel and Iran in June last year, India had evacuated nine Nepalis from Iran, according to India’s Ministry of External Affairs.

Nepal does not have an Embassy in Iran.

Khadka said the Nepali government is also preparing to coordinate with international organisations, particularly the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), for rescue and management efforts.

According to the Ministry, Nepal will finalise its evacuation strategy based on ongoing assessments of the conflict situation and the steps taken by the affected and neighbouring countries.

Meanwhile, Nepal has expressed deep concern over the evolving situation in the Middle East, saying that it is closely monitoring the developments.

In an official statement issued on Sunday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged all parties concerned to exercise maximum restraint, refrain from actions that could further escalate tensions, and ensure the protection of civilians.

Nepal also called for resolving differences through diplomacy and dialogue, emphasising the importance of peaceful means in addressing conflicts.

Bengaluru, April 7 (IANS) Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday announced that “pourakarmikas” (civic workers) will be granted permanent employment on May 1, on the occasion of Labour Day.

In his address at the 25th annual celebration of the Pourakarmika Maha Sangha and an awareness programme for the pourakarmika community held at the Palace Grounds in Bengaluru, Siddaramaiah said: “Like the vachanas of Basavanna that say ‘work is worship’, you are engaged in sacred labour. Few are willing to do the kind of work you do. Hence, it is the government’s responsibility and duty to address your issues and fulfil your demands.”

“There is no difference between a Chief Secretary and a pourakarmika. All services are sacred. It is not right to treat you disrespectfully. You, too, deserve professional dignity and social respect. Therefore, your services will be made permanent,” he added.

The jobs of drivers working with pourakarmikas on a contract basis will also be regularised, the Chief Minister said.

“Children of pourakarmikas must be educated and empowered. Only through education can one achieve self-respect. Educate all your children. Every child has talent; they just need an opportunity. When opportunities are given, their potential will emerge,” he said.

“You are doing hard work to maintain cleanliness now. But your children should not have to do the same. They should move on to other professions and progress. You must integrate into the mainstream of society,” he added.

He further assured that the government would provide pourakarmikas with cashless health cards. Issues regarding the identity and recognition of workers would also be resolved, he promised.

Praising the former Mayor of Bengaluru, Narayan for his role in organising and advocating for pourakarmikas, the CM noted: “Narayan, who rose from this community to become the Mayor, has made a huge contribution to the pourakarmika movement.”

“The problems presented by Narayan before the government have been resolved in many ways by our administration. It was our government that ended the contract system and ensured that salaries are paid directly by the municipality. We also facilitated the construction of 524 houses for pourakarmikas in Mysuru, granting Rs 6.5 lakh per house under the housing scheme. This was done only by our government.”

“The pourakarmika salary has been increased from Rs 7,000 to Rs 17,000 during my tenure,” Siddaramaiah said.

“Every year, 1,000 pourakarmikas are being sent on foreign tours. The pourakarmika community must also develop global awareness,” the CM urged.

AAP planning to regularise 12,000 contract staff in MCD, claims Atishi

New Delhi, Feb 23 (IANS) The ruling AAP is preparing to regularise 12,000 contract employees of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi by approving a proposal in the upcoming sitting of the civic House on February 25, party leader and former Chief Minister Atishi said on Sunday.

The BJP hit back saying that Atishi is spreading lies as no proposal to regularise the employees has yet been sent to the office of the MCD Secretary for the February 25 sitting of the civic House.

Addressing a press conference with Mayor Mahesh Kumar Khichi, Atishi said this would be a historic decision wherein such a large number of contract workers including sanitation workers, gardeners, teachers, junior engineers and malaria breeding checkers.

“February 25 will be a landmark day in the history of MCD when such a large number of contract workers will get permanent jobs in one go,” she said.

The AAP announcement comes in the backdrop of an impending show of strength in MCD after 12 seats in the civic agency fell vacant in the MCD due to the election of councillors to the Delhi Assembly and Parliament.

The possibility of the Opposition gaining a majority after this realignment was recently indicated by Delhi BJP President Virender Sachdeva when he said there were high chances of Delhi getting a “Triple engine” government – with the MCD being the third engine apart from the Delhi and Union governments.

BJP leaders claim that the party enjoys the support of councillors in the 250-member civic body whose 12 seats are vacant.

She said that the AAP has been committed towards regularisation of contract employees and has so far given permanent jobs to 4,500 sanitation workers.

She said that when the AAP contested the municipal elections, it had promised to make temporary employees permanent and today the party has decided to fulfill that promise.

Highlighting the AAP’s concern for contract employees, she said the party has been regularly giving permanent postings to contract teachers in Punjab as well.

Mayor Khichi also highlighted the AAP’s track record of fulfilling all promises made by the party.

Earlier in the day, the 22 AAP legislators elected Atishi as the party’s face in the Legislative Assembly.

Asked about the BJP leaders’ allegations that the AAP-led Delhi government has left the coffers empty, the AAP leader, who is set to be elected the Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, said, “I was expecting that the BJP would fulfil its promises without offering excuses for irritants in walking the talk.”

Delhi’s Budget outlay in 2015, when the AAP government was formed, was Rs 30,000 crore. “It increased to Rs 77,000 crore in the past 10 years – over 2.5 times – and I challenge the BJP to tell me about even a single government in BJP-ruled states which has recorded such a remarkable feat,” she said.

She also highlighted CAG’s complement for the previous AAP government for being the only one with a surplus earning or profit.

50 new future skill centres, 10 international academies to be set up for skill development

New Delhi, Feb 13 (IANS) The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) of the Union government has announced to set up at least 50 new Future Skills Centres and 10 NSDC International Academies to advance skill development and training programs in the country.

So far, 33 global corporations have partnered, and 21 Future Skills Centres have been established in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Ved Mani Tiwari, CEO, NSDC shared this roadmap to skill and upskill the Indian youth for domestic and global job markets.

On the National Apprenticeship Programme, Tiwari said that NSDC has significantly contributed to apprenticeship programs from the financial year 2018-19 to 2024-25. Over 3.5 million apprentices have been engaged in various sectors, and 0.56 million assessments have been successfully conducted to ensure skill competency.

The network expansion efforts have resulted in the establishment of over 49,000 training centres engaging apprentices, with 170 Training Partner Aggregators (TPAs) being empanelled to facilitate skill training.

In terms of financial commitment, a fund disbursement of Rs 100,250 million has been allocated to support apprenticeship programs. The National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) has provided grants amounting to Rs 10.46 billion, while the industry has contributed Rs 288.93 billion towards apprenticeship initiatives.

He said: “The number of industry-aligned programs will increase beyond 300, covering 12 major emerging technologies. The goal is to train over 2 lakh candidates and establish over 2.70 lakh square feet of training infrastructure, further strengthening employability and workforce readiness.”

NSDC aims to make quality education accessible to students from tier two and three colleges by addressing challenges in emerging technologies through collaborations with Institutes of National Importance.

So far, 11 premium institutions have partnered to launch 17 micro-credential programs, awarding more than 75,000 credits and training over 5,000 candidates.

NSDC also plans to collaborate with 15 premium institutions, introduce over 30 micro-credential programs, and award around 1,80,000 credits, further enhancing access to quality education and skill development, Tiwari added.

As part of the Job-as-Skills model, he said, “There are plans to onboard 1 million students, establish MoUs with leading OEMs, bring in training partners, select industry-specific tools, design career progression pathways, implement joint certification with NSDC and OEMs, and introduce new industry verticals in a phased manner.”

Talking about international mobility, he said that the institution is working towards setting up new international language labs and assessment centres, offering training in Russian, Italian, Korean, and French to equip candidates with multilingual capabilities, enhancing their global employability.

Outlining a strategic roadmap for the future, focusing on expanding global employment opportunities and skill development initiatives, he said, “Israel has requested 5000 healthcare workers.”

Additionally, NSDC International is extending its advisory services across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and Africa, ensuring that workforce development programs are effectively implemented in these regions.

Tiwari said that youth living in remote areas of the country are skilling and upskilling themselves through the Skill India Digital Hub (SIDH).

SIDH has made a significant impact, reaching 1.30 crore candidates, including 92 lakh short-term trained candidates, 86 lakh certified candidates, and 13 lakh apprentices. The platform supports more than 7,100 courses in 23 Indian languages, with over 10 lakh active users and around 42,000 skilling and training centres, reinforcing its role in convergence, integration, skilling ecosystem development, partnerships, recognition, and measurable outcomes.

The platform collaborates with 57 digital learning partners, offering 1,245 courses.

He also talked about NSDC JobX which is an advanced job platform that connects job seekers and employers by simplifying hiring and offering premium services like resume building, career coaching, and job alerts.

Technological advancements have played a pivotal role, with over 0.3 million e-KYC completions and the creation of 2.8 million Aadhaar-based beneficiary IDs, enhancing digital tracking and transparency in skill development programs.

A total of 1.58 million apprentices, constituting 45.5 per cent of the total engagement, belong to socio-economic groups, ensuring inclusive growth. He highlighted that NSDC has successfully trained over 40.3 million candidates, with 9.4 million securing placements.

With a network of over 40,000 skilling centres, the skilling programmes have empowered 18.3 million women and supported 12.9 million candidates from socio-economically disadvantaged groups, along with over 250,000 people with special abilities. The reach of these initiatives extends across 36 sector skill councils, covering more than 750 districts and engaging 200,000 employers.
