Odisha aims to double milk production in next 5 years: CM Majhi

Bhubaneswar, June 1 (IANS) Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday said the state government is making all efforts to double the production of milk in Odisha in the next five years.

While addressing the gathering during a programme held here on the occasion of the state-wide celebration of World Milk Day-2025, CM Majhi stated that milk production is a significant part of the rural economy.

“It not only serves as a source of income but also plays a vital role in supplying nutritious food to our society. Our state produced 26.4 lakh metric tonnes of milk in 2023-24, and our government is trying to double it in the next five years. Therefore, our government has launched the ‘Mukhyamantri Kamadhenu Yojana’ to develop cow husbandry and increase milk production in the state,” said CM Majhi.

He noted that in the last financial year of 2024-25, 3 lakh beneficiaries have received financial assistance worth Rs. 71 crore.

CM Majhi further added that the state government wants to establish Odisha as a major milk-producing state in the country.

The Chief Minister urged everyone to contribute towards realising the slogan of ‘Milk-rich Odisha, healthy Odisha’.

CM Majhi stated that his government is always committed towards animal welfare.

He said that the state government is providing financial assistance to registered ‘goshalas’ (cowsheds) under the Mukhyamantri Prani Kalyan Yojana launched by the state government with a budgetary outlay of Rs 186 crore for food, maintenance and upkeep of stray and helpless cattle in the cowsheds.

Making a significant announcement, CM Majhi said that the state government will henceforth give Rs 3 more per litre to the milk producers associated with the state-owned Odisha State Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation Limited (OMFED), which will benefit 2.5 lakh milk farmers across the state.

CM Majhi further announced that the state government will bear Rs 2 of the Rs 4 per litre increase in milk prices for consumers.

He also announced that accidental death assistance of Rs 1 lakh will be provided to milk producers.

It is worth noting that World Milk Day has been celebrated every year on June 1 since 2001 with the aim of spreading widespread awareness about the contribution of livestock keepers in nutritional development and economic growth, and the benefits of milk in a balanced diet.

K’taka govt releases app & portal to ensure transparency in seat selection for professional courses

Bengaluru, May 12 (IANS) The Karnataka government on Monday launched a college portal, KEA mobile app and KEA Chatbot for the aspirants of the Common Entrance Test (CET) to ensure transparency in the selection of candidates for professional courses.

Minister for Higher Education M.C. Sudhakar has released the app, portal and chatbot launched by the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) in a programme organised at the Bengaluru Higher Education Council.

After the launch, Minister Sudhakar took to X: “Innovative initiatives by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) — Launch of College Portal, KEA mobile app, and KEA Chatbot. The seat selection process for professional courses for the academic year 2025–26 is to become even more transparent. Students are encouraged to download the app and make use of its benefits.”

With the launch of the new app and the portal, the candidates aspiring to take up the CET now have the option to submit their application through the mobile app. Earlier, the candidates encountered issues while submitting their applications from the cyber centres. Due to many technical issues, the eligible candidates many times even missed the seats.

Considering all this, the KEA has come up with the new app and portals. The candidates can access all information regarding the issues they face, complete information about the colleges, fees, hostel fees and details of facilities available.

The candidates will also get information on the syllabus. The candidates can submit applications to UG-CET, PG-CET and Diploma Common Entrance Test (DCET).

The CET is a state-level exam conducted for admissions into various professional courses like engineering, medical, and agricultural programmes.

Earlier, Minister Sudhakar had unveiled a simplified and mobile-friendly CET application process, designed to benefit candidates from rural areas. This upgraded system allows applicants to complete their submissions using mobile phones, eliminating the need to visit cyber centres.

Sudhakar had also announced a ‘one-time registration’ system for recruitment exams. This innovative approach was designed to enable candidates to register once and reuse their credentials for subsequent exams, streamlining the application process and reducing repetitive paperwork.’

This year’s CET examination sparked major controversy in Karnataka after students were asked to remove their sacred threads before entering the exam halls. The Congress-led government in Karnataka issued an apology over the incident and suspended the staff responsible at the exam centres.

Union Home Secretary reviews security in J&K

Srinagar, Dec 30 (IANS) Union Home Secretary, Govind Mohan on Monday chaired a high-level security review meeting in Srinagar, focusing on security preparedness, the ongoing anti-terrorist operations and addressing potential threats to peace and security in J&K.

The meeting, held at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) on the banks of the Dal Lake, was attended by the Intelligence Bureau (IB) Director, Tapan Deka, top J&K police and CAPF officers.

Security arrangements for the winter tourism-related events in Gulmarg, Pahalgam and other destinations of tourist interest came up for discussion during the review meeting.

As winter sports become a major attraction for domestic and foreign tourists, security for the tourists and the locals associated with making such adventure sports successful was also reviewed.

While reviewing the security in the hinterland, the meeting also reviewed security along the international border and the line of control (LoC).

Challenges emerging after an elected government took office in J&K were also discussed since political activities by the elected government and its representatives would need extra security attention.

The possibility of infiltration from across the LoC and the international border during the winter months was also discussed and measures suggested to ensure zero infiltration.

The challenges post the recent snowfall in the Valley were also discussed as heavy snowfall often makes patrolling and carrying out security operations difficult in remote and inaccessible areas.

Top intelligence, police and CAPF officers gave PowerPoint presentations during the review meeting to put across their appreciation of the security situation. J&K Chief Secretary, Atal Dulloo, DGP, Nalin Prabhat, and the GOC of the ar,y’s Srinagar-headquartered 15 Corps also attended the meeting.

RG Kar case: CFSL report creates doubts about actual ‘scene of crime’

Kolkata, Dec 24 (IANS) A report submitted by the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has created doubts over the “scene of the crime” in the ghastly rape and murder of a junior doctor of state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata in August.

The body of the victim was spotted at the seminar hall within the hospital premises of R.G. Kar on the morning of August 9, and then first, the Kolkata Police and later the CBI carried out the investigation considering the seminar hall as the “scene of crime”.

However, a report that CFSL has submitted to the central investigating agency has clearly stated that there is no evident sign of scuffle within the seminar room, sources aware of the development said.

In fact, sources said, the CFSL report strengthens the apprehension raised by the section of the medical fraternity in the state since the beginning that the actual “scene of the crime” was someplace else and after the ghastly rape and murder the body was shifted to the seminar hall to mislead future investigation.

The explosive CFSL report on this count surfaced on the day when Calcutta High Court’s single Judge Bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh will hear a petition of the parents of the victim woman doctor seeking a fresh probe in the matter since the beginning.

Sources said that during the initial investigation carried out by Kolkata Police, the investigating cops of city police collected a total of 40 items from the seminar hall where the body of the victim was spotted on August 9.

Later after the Calcutta High Court directed the CBI to take charge of the investigation, several items recovered from the seminar hall were forwarded to CFSL for examination purposes. On August 14, a team of CFSL experts also physically examined the purported scene of the crime, i.e., the seminar hall.

Thereafter based on forensic reports of the items seized and the physical examination of the scene of the crime, CFSL has submitted a report to CBI which has created doubts about the actual scene of crime.
