On Jayalalithaa’s birth anniversary, Sasikala set to unveil new political course in Pasumpon

Chennai, Feb 24( IANS) Marking the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, V. K. Sasikala indicated that she would announce the next phase of her political journey, triggering fresh speculation in Tamil Nadu’s political circles.

Sasikala, a close confidante of Jayalalithaa for over three decades, remained a powerful presence behind the scenes during the AIADMK supremo’s rule.

Following Jayalalithaa’s death in December 2016, Sasikala formally stepped into active politics and was appointed General Secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

Soon after, she was elected leader of the AIADMK Legislature Party and was poised to take over as Chief Minister. However, dramatic political developments altered the course of events.

Then Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam rebelled against her leadership, launching what he described as a “dharma yuddham” (righteous battle).

Before Sasikala could assume office, she was convicted in a disproportionate assets case and sentenced to four years in prison.

Prior to surrendering, she named Edappadi K. Palaniswami as Chief Minister, reshaping the party’s leadership structure.

By the time Sasikala was released from prison in 2021, Tamil Nadu’s political landscape had undergone significant change.

She was subsequently sidelined and expelled from the AIADMK, and her repeated calls for party unity ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections failed to yield any positive response from the current leadership.

Over the past month, Sasikala has intensified consultations with her supporters, former AIADMK functionaries, and leaders from allied organisations.

At a recent memorial event for C.N. Annadurai, she made a dramatic declaration that she would re-enter the electoral fray.

Today, after paying floral tributes at the memorials of M.G. Ramachandran and Jayalalithaa, Sasikala said she would make an “important announcement” in Pasumpon.

Political observers note that launching and registering a new party – as her nephew T.T.V. Dhinakaran did – would be a complex and time-consuming task.

As a result, speculation is rife over whether Sasikala will adopt a confrontational stance against the AIADMK leadership or signal support for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Her announcement is expected to have significant implications for the Opposition space in Tamil Nadu.

The ceremony will be open to the public from February 22, 2025.

The new format of the ceremony offers a dynamic visual and musical performance, with the backdrop of the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Military drills by troops and horses of the President’s Bodyguard, and the troops of the Ceremonial Guard Battalion, along with the Ceremonial Military Brass Band, spread over a larger area, also participate in the new format.

According to Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Change of Guard ceremony is a time-honoured military tradition with roots in military antiquity, involving the periodic replacement of guards and sentries at palaces, forts, and defence establishments.

This ritual goes beyond mere security, it symbolises vigilance, discipline, tradition, and continuity. At Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President’s Bodyguard and the Ceremonial Army Guard Battalion jointly undertake the Ceremonial Change of Guard held every week, according to Rashtrapati Bhavan’s website.

The grand event, held weekly at Gate No. 1 of Rashtrapati Bhavan, embodies the rich military heritage of India, showcasing the discipline and precision of the Armed Forces.

The ceremony is visually captivating against the backdrop of this historic edifice. The 30-minute event commences with the President’s Bodyguard troops, mounted on their caparisoned and impeccably groomed steeds, advancing from behind the Jaipur Column to the stirring music of the Army Brass Band.

The President’s Bodyguard and the Army Guard, clad in immaculate uniforms, stand at attention, exemplifying the highest standards of military decorum. The formal procession features soldiers marching in perfect formation, with the President’s Bodyguard flanking the Army Guard contingent on their towering steeds, all accompanied by the resonant sound of military music. The precision of their movements reflects the rigorous training and dedication of these soldiers.

The ceremony concludes with an impressive equestrian display by the President’s Bodyguard, which is the highlight of the ceremony, followed by the National Anthem.

The backdrop of Rashtrapati Bhavan, with its stunning architecture and lush gardens, adds to the grandeur of the ceremony. NIA starts searches at 22 locations in 5 states, J&K UT

Srinagar, Sep 8 (IANS) Sleuths of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday started searches at 22 locations in five states including the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). The NIA conducted searches in Bihar, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh apart from J&K early in the morning.

Officials said that the NIA has started searches at Budgam, Kulgam, Pattan, Pulwama and Kangan areas of the Valley today morning.

These searches are being carried out with the assistance of the local police and the CRPF, officials added.

The NIA searches are connected with the terror funding case being investigated by the agency.

Some high profile terror cases including those involving terror funding and killings of innocent civilians are being investigated by the NIA.

The killing of 9 pilgrims and injuries to several others by terrorists in Reasi district of Jammu division on June 9, 2024 is also being investigated by the NIA and some people harbouring the terrorists responsible for the Reasi attack had been arrested.

The investigation of the terror attack carried out by Pakistan backed LeT terrorists on April 22 in Baisaran meadow of Pahalgam was also handed over to the NIA.

Twenty six people including 25 tourists and a local Pony owner were killed in the Baisaran meadow attack.

Three Pakistani terrorists, Suleman, Jibran and Hamza Afghani were killed by the joint forces on July 28, 2025.

These three LeT terrorists were killed in the foothills of Mahadev Peak in the higher reaches of Dachigam national park in Harwan area of Srinagar district.

The Army called the operation against these three terrorist as ‘Operation Mahadev’ after they were identified as the terrorists, who had carried out the Baisaran terror attack.

These three Pahalgam terrorists who were killed during ‘Operation Mahadev’ were identified and tracked with the help of photographs recovered from a mobile phone seized by the security forces after an encounter in south Kashmir in 2024, officials confirmed after the operation.

Delhi squall: NDMC command centre handles 61 complaints of fallen trees, waterlogging

New Delhi, May 2 (IANS) The New Delhi Municipal Council’s Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) witnessed hectic activity on Friday as it responded to 61 complaints related to fallen trees and waterlogging during the pre-dawn squall and rain.

Vice Chairman of NDMC Kuljeet Singh Chahal said a total of 61 complaints were received at the ICCC — 25 related to fallen trees/branches, 12 to waterlogging, and 24 to electricity supply.

He said he conducted live monitoring of field operations and analysed trends in public grievances. He directed officials to ensure timely and effective resolution of all complaints so that citizens experience minimal inconvenience.

According to NDMC officials, incidents of fallen trees were reported mainly from North Avenue, S.B. Marg, Jor Bagh, R.K. Puram, Teen Murti, Rail Museum, Lodhi Colony, Akbar Road, India Gate, and Connaught Place.

Waterlogging complaints were received from Shanti Path, Akbar Road, Teen Murti, Jor Bagh, Kalibari, Mandir Marg, Pandara Road, and BKS Marg.

Chahal also stated that most complaints were resolved, and those pertaining to areas outside the NDMC jurisdiction were forwarded to the agencies concerned.

Chahal appreciated the functioning of the ICCC, describing it as the digital nerve centre of NDMC as it provides a critical foundation for real-time data, alerts, coordination, decision-making, and planning.

He outlined the key functions of the ICCC, especially its emergency response capabilities highlighted how NDMC Mobile App was being used as an effective platform for quick registration and resolution of citizen complaints.

He said the CCTV Surveillance network was also used for real-time monitoring of key areas through 500 cameras.

Chahal said the officials at the ICCC have also been equipped with a facility to switch pumps on/off in real-time during waterlogging from their offices.

Chahal commended NDMC’s dedicated teams for their swift, coordinated, and sensitive response on Friday.

He reiterated NDMC’s commitment to delivering uninterrupted and quality civic services to residents under all circumstances, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a proactive, citizen-centric, and responsive urban governance model.
