Online pass now mandatory for India-Pak border visit near Tanot Mata temple

Jaisalmer, Feb 13 (IANS) Visitors and devotees planning to visit the India-Pakistan border near Shri Tanot Mata Temple in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer will now need an online pass, as the Temple Trust has made prior registration mandatory, officials said.

The new rules came into effect on Thursday, to enhance security and streamline crowd management.

According to an official notice issued by the temple trust, no visitor will be allowed to enter the border area without prior online registration.

Applicants must submit their details through the Trust’s official website www.shritanotmatamandirtrust.com, after which a border pass will be issued and sent to their registered email address.

To avoid delays at security checkpoints, devotees must carry two printed copies of the pass along with the original identity document used during the online application for verification.

Each adult visitor must apply separately for the pass, while children aged below 12 years will be allowed entry without a separate pass when accompanied by guardians.

Officials said the move aims to reduce congestion and waiting time at checkpoints, especially during the peak tourist and pilgrimage season.

Earlier, verification at the border often led to long queues, causing inconvenience to pilgrims and tourists.

Jaisalmer shares a 471-mile-long India-Pakistan border, the longest stretch of the International Border in Rajasthan, with the Border Security Force (BSF) maintaining vigilance at 122 checkpoints.

The Tanot region, known for its strategic importance and religious significance, attracts millions of tourists and devotees every year.

Temple Trust officials said the online pass system will help security agencies maintain better records of visitors and ensure smoother movement at the border.

They have appealed to all pilgrims and tourists to complete the registration process before travelling to Tanot to avoid last-minute hassles.

“The new system will save visitors from waiting for hours and will also strengthen security protocols at the border,” a Trust official said.

Visitors are advised to plan their trip in advance and ensure they carry all required documents for a smooth entry into the border area.

Chennai, April 10 (IANS) A shocking incident at a private matriculation school in Coimbatore district has sparked outrage after a Class 8 student was forced to write her annual examination seated outside the classroom, reportedly because she was menstruating.

The incident occurred at a school in Senguttaipalayam near Pollachi.

A video recorded by the girl’s mother, showing the student writing her exam on the steps outside the classroom, went viral on social media, prompting authorities to launch an inquiry.

According to sources, the student had two exams scheduled this week. Her parents had requested a separate desk inside the classroom to ensure her comfort during her menstrual cycle.

Despite this, on Monday, the girl was made to sit on the floor outside the classroom to write her exam.

On Wednesday, when the girl returned to school for another exam, her parents found her again seated outside.

In the video captured by her mother, the student is heard saying that the school principal had instructed her to sit there.

Director of Matriculation Schools, A. Palanisamy, confirmed that the Chief Educational Officer is conducting an inquiry into the incident.

“An explanation has been sought from the school management, and appropriate action will be taken after the report is received,” he said.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Shristi Singh, who conducted a preliminary inquiry on Thursday, detailed the sequence of events.

She said the girl’s mother had contacted the class teacher on the evening of April 6 to request special seating arrangements, but was told to speak to the principal.

The following day, April 7, the mother met the principal while dropping off her daughter and requested a separate arrangement to prevent the risk of infection.

After the mother left, the student was made to sit outside the classroom. That evening, the girl complained of leg pain from sitting on the hard surface.

She missed school the next day but returned on Wednesday, only to face the same treatment.

A relative who noticed her sitting outside informed the family, prompting the mother to rush to the school and record the now-viral video.

While no formal police complaint has been lodged yet, officials have assured a fair investigation once it is received.

Meanwhile, the school’s correspondent has suspended the principal under Section 17 of the Right to Education Act, 2009, which prohibits physical or mental harassment of children.

Visuals authenticate claims of illegal immigrants enjoying citizen status, availing official benefits in Bengal

New Delhi, Nov 21 (IANS) Visuals of groups of men, women, and children huddled at West Bengal’s border gates with reports of their intent at crossing “back to Bangladesh” amidst Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the state’s voter list do not augur well for the ruling Trinamool Congress government, a few months before polls.

Amid the reports came Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s appeal to the Election Commission to stop the SIR exercise, currently underway in 11 other states and Union Territories. It has drawn a sharp reaction from Home Minister Amit Shah, saying that some political parties are on a mission to shield the infiltrators by opposing the voter verification drive.

Addressing an event in Gujarat on Friday, the Home Minister pointed out that stopping infiltration is not just necessary but also the need of the hour because of the threat it poses to India’s demography and democracy.

For the state unit of West Bengal’s principal Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the issue is a moment for “I told you so”. Reports coming from the border mention not only Bangladeshi, but also alleged Rohingyas from Myanmar – till now settled in India – trying to go back where they came from.

The visuals are already shaping up as a psychological and tactical tool in the run-up to the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. For a long time, the state government and Trinamool leaders have either been refuting or ignoring claims of a massive influx of undocumented migrants from Bangladesh.

Some of them are alleged to be Rohingyas, escaping the ongoing conflict in the northern part of Rakhine State in Myanmar, who reportedly slip into Bangladesh’s Chittagong where some settle, while others continue their trek westwards – towards the India border. These visuals are likely to deepen political polarisation and force the election into a battle of competing narratives.

Till now, the Trinamool enjoyed a brace of advantages in its favour where district-level workers had identified electors from other states with the same identity card numbers and, in a separate issue, successfully playing up Bengali pride and igniting a language controversy.

Earlier this year, Mamata had flagged electors with similar Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) numbers, alleging the BJP’s collusion with the Election Commission in trying to influence the West Bengal Assembly elections using fake voters. Similar allegations had also been made in Maharashtra and Delhi.

The poll body had clarified that some electors may have identical EPIC numbers, but they belonged to different states and thus do not imply duplicate or fake voters.

Also, when visuals surfaced of Bengali-speaking labourers being detained in BJP-ruled states (like Odisha or Delhi) or of panic-stricken villagers queuing for documents, the Trinamool framed these as an attack on Bengali-speakers. This helped Mamata score a point by arguing that BJP leaders, being “outsiders”, cannot distinguish between an Indian Bengali and a Bangladeshi.

She attempted to fracture the Bengali Hindu vote that might otherwise shift to the BJP, appealing to linguistic identity over religious identity. Thus, though technicalities and by playing the Bengali pride card, the Trinamool chief kept the migrant issue down.

Additionally, despite several allegations and some media reports, no authentic proof of the influx or the inclusion of these migrants in the voter list could be established.

Now, media reports contain statements from people among those assembled at the borders that they had cast their mandate in polls and even utilised official benefit packages, including financial doles and health schemes. Many have exhibited their Aadhaar and ration cards in front of cameras.

Leaders like BJP lawmaker from West Bengal, Samik Bhattacharya, have repeatedly said undocumented immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar settled in the state pose a threat to internal security. He has also claimed that he had even reported it to the state police several times.

On occasions, facing strong opposition from the Trinamool benches in the Rajya Sabha, Bhattacharya said that he can prove such an allegation. Amidst the diatribe, a simple process of electoral list revision has led to the identification of immigrants enjoying citizenship status for years on end.

One year of Sambhal violence: Police vigil tightened, city administration on high alert

Sambhal, Nov 24 (IANS) The police and city administration are in high alert mode, as the day marks completion of one year of bloody violence during the survey of Jama masjid in the city. Security arrangements across the district have been tightened while security vigil has been enhanced. The police department remains on high alert while additional forces have been deployed in the areas that witnessed unrest last year.

CCTV cameras have been installed at the site of the violence and in the areas surrounding the Jama Masjid. All cameras are being monitored live from the control room at Satyavrat Chowki near the mosque. Officers are continuously observing the footage and coordinating with ground teams to ensure preparedness for any situation that may arise.

Sambhal Police have put in place multi-layered security plan. RAF detachments, PAC personnel, and local police units are patrolling the entire region. Additional forces have been stationed at various locations deemed sensitive. According to officials, these measures have been taken to ensure that law and order remain undisturbed under all circumstances.

The Jama Masjid in Sambhal was built during the reign of the first Mughal emperor, Babur, between 1526 and 1530. The controversy over the mosque erupted after advocate Vishnu Shanker Jain and others petitioned in court, claiming that the Jama Masjid stood on the ruins of a temple dedicated to Lord Kalki. Jain, who is also involved in the Gyanvapi and Krishna Janmabhoomi cases, argued that the mosque was constructed after the destruction of a temple during Babur’s invasion in 1526–27. The petition cited historical texts such as the Baburnamah and Ain-e-Akbari to support its claim.

Acting on the petition, the court ordered a survey of the mosque on November 19, 2024. Advocate Commissioner Ramesh Raghav, accompanied by district administration and police personnel, conducted the survey the same day. The swift proceedings drew criticism, with some alleging judicial overreach and procedural lapses.

The Muslim community, including the Jama Masjid management committee, strongly opposed the survey. They cited the Places of Worship Act, 1991, which bars altering the status of any religious site as it existed on August 15, 1947. Ziaur Rehman Barq, the Samajwadi Party MP from Sambhal, condemned the action, calling it a threat to communal harmony.

On November 24, tensions boiled over as a second survey was scheduled. Protests erupted near the mosque as hundreds of locals, fearing a repeat of the Babri Masjid demolition, gathered to resist the survey. The demonstrations quickly turned violent, with protesters throwing stones and setting vehicles on fire.

Several vehicles were torched, and property around the mosque was damaged. Internet services were suspended, prohibitory orders were imposed, and schools were shut for a day to prevent further escalation.

Notably, Sambhal holds religious importance for Hindus as it is believed to be the birthplace of Kalki, the tenth and final avatar of Vishnu. Hindu scriptures state that Kalki will appear in Sambhal to end the Kalyug, the age of “moral decline”. Earlier this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the grand Kalki Dham, stating that the arrival of Kalki would “determine the course of thousands of years.”
