Patna High Court reserves order on pleas seeking 70th BPSC prelims re-exam

Patna, March 19 (IANS) The Patna High Court on Wednesday reserved its decision on petitions seeking the re-examination of the 70th BPSC Civil Preliminary Examination.

The division bench of Acting Chief Justice Ashutosh Kumar delivered the judgment after hearing multiple petitions, including a PIL filed on the matter.

Petitioners alleged that large-scale irregularities, including a question paper leak during the exam on December 13, 2024, across 912 centres in Bihar.

Advocate General PK Shahi, appearing for the Bihar government, rejected all allegations, stating no irregularities occurred and that claims of a paper leak were politically motivated.

Justice A.S. Chandel initially heard the case before it was transferred to the division bench. Justice Arvind Kumar Chandel had earlier directed the state government and BPSC to submit an affidavit clarifying the situation by January 30, 2025.

The division bench of Acting Chief Justice Ashutosh Kumar has reserved its decision after extensive arguments from both sides.

Senior lawyer YV Giri, representing the petitions, alleged that the electronic jammers installed at many examination centres did not function properly, potentially enabling malpractice.

The exam was cancelled at Bapu Examination Centre (Kumhrar, Patna) which was held on December 13, 2024, and later re-conducted at 22 centres on January 4, 2025, which the petitioners claim violates constitutional provisions.

They also alleged that several questions and answer choices were incorrect, impacting candidates’ scores and overall results.

Despite legal challenges, the BPSC declared preliminary results and announced main exam dates.

The petitioners sought a stay on the 70th BPSC recruitment process, but the court refused to halt the main examination. The final verdict awaited after the court completes hearings.

The judgment will decide whether the preliminary exam results stand or if a re-exam will be conducted for over 4 lakh candidates.

Meanwhile, a group of BPSC candidates is still agitating at the Gardanibagh Dharna site demanding cancellation of the preliminary examination.

Lucknow, March 6 (IANS) An “active terrorist” of Khalistani terror group — Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) — and Pakistan’s ISI was arrested from Uttar Pradesh’s Kaushambi district in the early hours of Thursday in a joint operation by Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) and Punjab Police, an official said.

The suspected terrorist, identified as Lajar Masih is said to be a resident of Kurlian village in Ramdas area of Amritsar, Punjab.

He was arrested around 3:20 a.m. in an operation carried out in the Kokhraj police station area of Kaushambi, Additional Director General of Police (UP Special Task Force, Law and Order) Amitabh Yash said.

“As per available information, the arrested terrorist works for Swarn Singh alias Jeevan Fauji, the head of the Germany-based module of Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), and is in direct touch with Pakistan-based ISI operatives,” Yash said.

“This terrorist had escaped from judicial custody in Punjab on September 24, 2024,” the ADG said.

The officer added that the UP STF succeeded in recovering some explosives material and illegal arms from the terrorist.

Among the seizures made are three active hand grenades, two active detonators, one foreign-made pistol, and 13 cartridges of foreign make, the officer said.

Besides, a white-coloured explosive powder, an Aadhaar card with a Ghaziabad address, and one mobile phone without a SIM card were also seized from his possession, he said.

A key accused involved in hurling explosives in Amritsar’s Jaintipur and Batala’s Raimal was killed in an exchange of fire with the police in Batala last week.

The development came hours after the police busted Pakistan’s ISI-backed Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) terror module with the arrest of its two operatives identified as Mohit of Buddhe di Khui in Batala and Vishal of Basarpura in Batala.

“Punjab Police busts a terror module backed by Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI-Pakistan) responsible for attacks in Batala and solves the attack cases in Jaintipur and Raimal carried out on January 15, 2025 and February 17, 2025, respectively (sic),” said Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav in a post on X.

Explosives had been hurled at the residence of a late ex-chairman of Amritsar Zila Parishad in Jaintipur on January 15 and near the residence of a policeman’s relative on February 17 in Batala. Happy Passia had used social media to claim responsibility for both blasts.

CM Yogi in Gorakhpur today to join Holi celebrations

New Delhi, March 13 (IANS) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will visit Gorakhpur on Thursday to participate in the vibrant Holi celebrations, joining in the Holika Dahan, which will begin from Pandeyhata in the evening.

He will also take part in the colourful Lord Narasimha Shobha Yatra, which will start from Ghantaghar, infusing the celebrations with the spirit of unity and harmony.

Gorakhpur, the sacred seat of Guru Gorakhnath, celebrates Holi with immense enthusiasm, where the social fabric of the city comes alive with the colours of harmony. The two major processions, Holika Dahan and the Lord Narasimha Shobha Yatra, are a significant part of the city’s Holi festivities and have become an attraction for people across the state.

These processions are symbolic of the deep spiritual and social values upheld by the region. The involvement of the Gorakhnath Peeth adds a unique flavour to the celebrations, making Gorakhpur’s Holi distinct and special.

Even after becoming the Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath, as the head of the Gorakhnath Peeth, continues to participate in these processions despite his busy schedule.

The Holi festivities at Gorakhnath Temple begin traditionally with Holika Dahan, a ritual where the ashes from the bonfire are used for a sacred tilak ceremony.

The Chief Minister, along with other devotees, will perform this ritual, which marks the beginning of the Holi celebrations.

The ashes of Holika Dahan symbolise the merging of devotion and social unity, emphasising the importance of both spiritual strength and community harmony.

The Lord Narasimha procession was first initiated in 1944 by Nanaji Deshmukh, a preacher of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), during his time in Gorakhpur. However, the tradition of celebrating Holi with the ashes of Holika Dahan at Gorakhnath Temple dates back even further.

Building space parks across India is crucial, says ex-ISRO chairman

Bengaluru, Feb 13 (IANS) The quality of technology in space-sector startups must reach greater heights, and establishing ‘Space Parks’ in all states is essential, said former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman S. Somanath on Thursday.

Speaking at a panel discussion on The Future of the Commercial Space Sector at the Global Investors Meet (GIM) Invest Karnataka 2025, he noted that earlier, there was no clarity regarding private participation in the space sector. However, with the government now formulating a clear policy, this is the right time for investment.

He highlighted the vast opportunities for private participation and investment in the commercial space sector. Startups and young entrepreneurs should capitalise on this momentum. Venture capital is crucial for startups, and the government is also extending financial support through various programmes. In this regard, the participation of state governments is vital, he added.

Somanath pointed out significant investment opportunities in areas such as satellite manufacturing and launch, satellite operations, infrastructure development, communication applications, data services, and data analysis.

He emphasised that, in the future, businesses offering satellite-based services in sectors like weather forecasting, fisheries, the blue economy, and agriculture will have even more opportunities.

He further explained that earlier, the government had to invest heavily in providing information, knowledge, and data to the public. However, with the advancement of the information technology revolution and private initiatives, information and data are now freely accessible to everyone. As a result, the government no longer bears the financial burden of investment in this sector. Startups should make the most of this freely available data, he advised.

Jacob Gallish, Executive Director of the Digital Economy Division at the US-India Business Council, remarked that India is a global leader in sectors such as space, information technology, semiconductors, and science and technology.

He further emphasised that India, with its vast pool of skilled and talented engineers, has the potential to bring revolutionary changes to the global commercial space sector.
