Peace rally held in Meghalaya to condole ‘untimely death’ of Raja Raghuvanshi

Shillong, June 11 (IANS) Hundreds of residents took out a peace rally held in Meghalaya’s Sohra to condole the death of Raja Raghuvanshi and extended their solidarity to the bereaved family.

The residents of Sohra, a famous tourist location in Meghalaya, stood up against misinformation, sending across the message that Sohra has always been safe and secure. Adding significance to the rally, Gavin Mylliem, MLA of Sohra Constituency, Titosstarwell Chyne, MDC, Sohra, along with Freeman Sing Syiem, Syiem of Hima Sohra, Marremdor Syiem, Deputy Syiem of Hima Sohra and members of Hima Sohra also joined the peace rally with the residents for 5 kilometres.

As a mark of respect and appreciation for the efforts put in by the search and rescue team, the dignitaries felicitated the Sohra police force and those involved in the venture of finding the victim.

Sohra was shaken by the shocking news of the couple’s disappearance, prompting a massive search and rescue operation that involved teams from both the state and across the country. Later, authorities discovered Raja Raghuvanshi’s body while the search for his wife continued. His wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, was subsequently arrested in Uttar Pradesh.

The death of Raja Raghuvanshi led many to assume Sohra is not safe anymore, which was dismissed by locals and tourists who have been visiting the place despite the misleading news.

On Wednesday, however, Sohra stood firm and resolute against the false news stories. The peace rally serves as a message encouraging tourists to enjoy the cascading waterfalls of Sohra, explore caves, listen to folktales, sip tea or coffee at a local stall, and enjoy the hospitality of the people that has attracted tourists from all corners of the world.

Holding placards with messages such as ‘Come and enjoy the beauty of Sohra’, ‘Tourists are always a part of our extended family’, and ‘Every tourist is welcome to Sohra’, the residents conveyed to both the nation and the world that the area has always been safe and secure. The guides who were part of the search and rescue operation also attended the peace rally.

The residents requested the people not to damage the image of the community, urging everyone to verify information before spreading false stories. Condoling the untimely death of Raja Raghuvanshi, the residents also held a candlelight ceremony for the deceased.

HD Kumaraswamy slams Siddaramaiah for ‘favouring’ his Kuruba community

Bengaluru, April 16 (IANS) Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H. D. Kumaraswamy on Wednesday slammed Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for “favouring” his community, Kuruba, while “targeting” Vokkaligas and Lingayats.

In a statement on the issue, Kumaraswamy asked, “Who are the ones getting the lion’s share of benefits under the most backwards 2A category?”

Challenging Siddaramaiah on sharing benefit distribution under the 2A category, Union Minister Kumaraswamy said: “There are 101 castes in the 2A category, and there is a 15 per cent reservation share. Who has taken the largest portion in this? And what role did you play in this appropriation? Speak the truth.”

He pointed out that the official data show Kuruba community people getting the maximum number of jobs in Group A, B, C, D jobs, admissions to professional courses, and all other related benefits under 2A.

Referring to professional courses like medical, dental, engineering, D. Pharm, B. Pharma, agriculture, etc., he asked how many children from each of the 101 castes under the 2A have secured admissions.

“Who gained the lion’s share of these seats and benefits?” the Union Minister asked.

He added that comprehensive data is available at 18th Cross in Malleswaram (CET office), and suggested that it could be reviewed.

Among the 101 communities within the 2A category, he told the remaining 100 communities: “You know very well who has captured the lion’s share of your right. Yet you remain silent – why? Will cursing Lingayats and Vokkaligas fill your stomach? Will your children get justice?”

The Union Minister said: “Who has eaten the largest share of food under the most backwards 2A category? Even now, speak the truth, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. I await your response. Satyameva Jayate. Let truth triumph.”

AIMIM, BJP locked in direct fight for Hyderabad MLC seat

Hyderabad, April 6 (IANS) Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are locked in a direct fight for the Hyderabad Local Authorities Constituency (LAC) seat of Telangana Legislative Council, scheduled to be held on April 23.

With both the ruling Congress and main opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) having decided to stay away, the contest will be between the AIMIM and the BJP.

AIMIM’s Mirza Riyaz Ul Hasan Effendi will take on N. Gautham Rao of the BJP in the first direct fight between the two in the Hyderabad LAC.

Going by the numbers, AIMIM is in a strong position to win the seat on its own. With Congress and BRS opting out, it is likely to be a cakewalk for the party headed by Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi.

For the BJP, this will be more than a symbolic fight as it entered the fray to expose what it calls the secret understanding Congress and BRS have with the AIMIM.

The electorate for Hyderabad LAC consists of 110 voters, including corporators, MLAs, and MPs. The AIMIM has the majority with 49 votes, followed by the BRS with 25 and the BJP with 22. The Congress party has 14 votes.

Though the ruling Congress has not officially made any statement on backing the AMIM, it is likely to extend support to the friendly party.

The AIMIM was considered an ally of BRS when the latter was in power. After Congress came to power in November 2023, Owaisi’s party mended fences with it.

BJP is fully aware that it lacked numbers to win the election, but it chose to field its candidate to force a contest.

Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay was quick to attack the three parties and called it Telangana’s ‘love triangle’.

He alleged that both BRS and Congress backed off from contesting the Hyderabad MLC elections to ensure AIMIM’s victory.

He said that Rahul Gandhi’s party is partnering with the same BRS and AIMIM he had falsely accused the BJP of aligning with during elections.

The Congress had reportedly assured AIMIM of its support for the Hyderabad LAC seat when the latter wanted one of the seats from the MLA quota.

Last month, five MLC vacancies from the MLA quota were filled unanimously. Three candidates of Congress and one each of its ally Communist Party of India (CPI) and main opposition BRS were elected unopposed.

The Congress left an MLC seat for its ally CPI to fulfill a commitment made at the time of the Assembly elections.

If elected, this will be the second term for Mirza Riyaz Ul Hasan Effendi as MLC. He was elected to the Council from the Hyderabad LAC seat in 2019, and his six-year term ended last month.

AIMIM currently has seven MLAs and one MLC. Its lone Mirza Rahmat Baig was elected in February 2023 with the support of the then ruling party BRS.

The BJP is upbeat after winning two out of three MLC seats from Graduate and Teachers’ constituencies in February. It defeated the Congress party in a direct contest in the Karimnagar-Medak-Nizamabad-Adilabad Graduates constituency.

BJP had fielded candidates in all three constituencies while Congress contested only one seat. The BRS stayed away from the contest.

These victories increased the BJP’s tally in the 40-member Legislative Council to three.

In March 2023, a candidate of the BJP-affiliated teachers’ union won the Mahabubnagar-Rangareddy-Hyderabad teachers’ constituency.

However, the BJP, which has eight MLAs in the 119-member Assembly and also bagged eight out of 17 Lok Sabha seats last year, is facing internal problems over its choice of candidate for the Hyderabad LAC seat.

Controversial MLA Raja Singh found fault with the party’s decision to nominate Gautham Rao.

The MLA from Goshamahal constituency in Hyderabad remarked that someone who acts as a slave has been named the party candidate. He alleged that senior leaders of the party were ignored.

Gautham Rao earlier served as the president of the BJP’s Hyderabad Central district. He is considered close to Union Minister for Coal and State BJP president G. Kishan Reddy.

Raja Singh has been opposing the decisions of Kishan Reddy.

Last month, he alleged that certain BJP leaders had been holding secret meetings with Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.

He questioned how the BJP could ever hope to form a government in Telangana with such secret meetings.

Two youths from Bihar held in Tripura with sophisticated revolver

Agartala, Jan 25 (IANS) Ahead of the Republic Day celebrations, Tripura Police arrested two youths hailing from Bihar with a sophisticated revolver, officials said on Saturday.

A police official said that acting on secret information, a police team raided a hotel in northern Tripura’s commercial town Dharmanagar, adjoining southern Assam, and arrested two youths identified as – Niraj Kumar (20) and Indal Mukhia (35) – on Friday night. The official said that as per the preliminary interrogation, the youths confessed that they came to Tripura to sell the revolver.

“Further interrogation has been going on to gather all the details about the arms trading,” he said.

Friday night’s arms seizure took place within four days after Tripura Police arrested a Bangladeshi national on January 21 with arms and Indian and Bangladeshi currencies after raiding a house in the Milanchakra Adarshapalli on the outskirts of the capital city.

The Bangladeshi man was identified as Samajpriya Chakma, a resident of Khagrachari district in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, a southeastern region of the neighbouring country. Police recovered a loaded 9 mm pistol, some cartridges, 25,000 Bangladeshi Taka, Rs 2.21 lakh Indian currency along with two smartphones from Chakma’s possession.

In view of the Republic Day celebrations falling on Sunday, the Border Security Force (BSF) and all other security forces have stepped up security both — along the India-Bangladesh border and sensitive and vulnerable places of the bordering state for the past few days.

A BSF spokesman said that after the Bangladesh unrest began last year, the BSF has intensified its domination and operations along the 856-km India-Bangladesh border in Tripura to prevent infiltration, exfiltration, and trans-border crimes including smuggling of contraband.

“The security along the India-Bangladesh border has been further intensified to prevent any kind of cross-border infiltration and illegal activities,” the spokesman said.

Tripura is surrounded by Bangladesh on three sides, parts of which are still unfenced in patches due to local disputes on land and demarcation-related issues. The BSF alone last year arrested 55 Rohingyas, 620 Bangladeshi nationals and 260 Indian nationals including human traffickers in various operations.
