PM Modi greets ex-Vice President Venkaiah Naidu on his birthday

New Delhi, July 1 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday greeted former Vice President of India, M. Venkaiah Naidu, on his 76th birthday.

On this special occasion, the Prime Minister lauded Naidu’s service and commitment to nation-building.

Taking to his X handle, PM Modi wrote, “Best wishes to our former Vice President Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu Garu on his birthday. I’ve had the good fortune of working together with Venkaiah Garu for many years. His commitment to public service and empowering the downtrodden is exemplary. Praying for his long and healthy life.”

Naidu was born on this day in 1949. He served as the vice president of India from 2017 to 2022. He has also served as the Minister of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, Urban Development and Information and Broadcasting in the Modi Cabinet.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah extended greetings to Naidu, highlighting his rise from the grassroots to becoming the Vice President of India.

“Warm birthday greetings to Shri @MVenkaiahNaiduJi. Rising from the grassroots to the office of the Vice President, your journey serving the nation and voicing the marginalised is an inspiration for young leaders. Praying to God for your continued good health and long life.” HM Shah wrote on his X handle.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu wished Venkaiah Naidu on his birthday, saying that his remarkable personality has earned him a unique place in politics.

Taking to his X handle, the Andhra CM wrote in Telegu (loosely translated), “Heartfelt congratulations on the 76th birthday of the honourable former Vice President of India, Shri Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu. He is a rare individual who entered politics as a student leader and rose to one of the highest positions in the country. As a legislator, a member of the Rajya Sabha, and the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party… in every role he undertook, Shri Venkaiah Naidu considered public service as the ultimate goal. That is his distinction. This remarkable personality has earned him a unique place in politics. I sincerely wish that Shri Venkaiah Naidu celebrates many more birthdays like this and continues to serve the public even more.”

Last year, PM Modi shared an article on Naidu, noting that his journey exemplified his unique ability to navigate the complexities of Indian politics with ease and humility. PM Modi also released three books chronicling the life and journey of Venkaiah Naidu.

Madhya Pradesh Cong chief accuses CM Mohan Yadav’s govt of corruption

Bhopal, Feb 19 (IANS) The Opposition Congress in Madhya Pradesh cornered the Chief Minister Mohan Yadav-led BJP government on Wednesday, levelling charges of corruption in the governance of the state.

The state’s Congress unit chief Jitu Patwari, talking to IANS on Wednesday alleged that a strong nexus of middlemen is operating in Madhya Pradesh Secretariat office in Bhopal and deciding the projects and allocation of funds.

Jitu Patwari said that being the Opposition party in the state, the Congress was raising its concerns in order to get the Chief Minister’s attention and to ensure immediate transparency in the governance system of Madhya Pradesh.

The Congress leader also targeted other ministers of Mohan Yadav’s Cabinet, alleging that the governance system had turned out to be “commission system” and there would hardly be any department in Madhya Pradesh where public work could be done without paying bribes.

Patwari went on to advice Chief Minister Yadav to carry out surprise inspections in disguise to find these commission agents involved in each and every department of the state government.

“This is not a matter of allegation and counter-allegation, but a serious issue which needs to be raised. Being a responsible Opposition, the Congress has been pointing this out time and again. I would be ready to join the CM, if he carries out an inspection in any department,” Patwari said.

In a scathing attack, Patwari further accused the BJP of tarnishing Madhya Pradesh’s image, citing scams like Vyapam, the nursing fraud, recruitment scandals, and financial misappropriations.

He accused the BJP of creating new methods of corruption while fostering an “immoral and unethical” political culture.

He went on to declare that Madhya Pradesh has become synonymous with corruption.

“Search on Google for the most corrupt state, and Madhya Pradesh tops the list,” Patwari reiterated. Patwari alleged that despite the Congress playing a constructive role as an Opposition, the BJP-led government operates with an entirely different mindset — one of deceit and revenge.

SC issues notice on MP journalists’ plea alleging threat from police

New Delhi, June 4 (IANS) The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued notice on a plea filed by two journalists from Madhya Pradesh alleging that they were physically assaulted at the instance of Bhind’s Superintendent of Police over their reporting on “illegal sand mining” in the Chambal river.

However, a bench of Justices Sanjay Karol and Satish Chandra Sharma declined to pass any interim order protecting the petitioners, journalists Shashikant Jatav and Amarkant Singh Chouhan, from any coercive action.

“Suppose you commit a crime like murder, can we grant you no coercive action order? We don’t know what crime has been registered against you,” remarked the Justice Karol-led Bench.

It said that before passing any interim order, the facts should be brought by the Madhya Pradesh government as well.

The apex court told the petitioners’ counsel to add Bhind’s SP as a party to the petition, observing that it is “very easy” to make allegations against an IPS officer without making him a party to the litigation.

The matter will be heard next on Monday.

During the hearing, the top court remarked: “We appreciate that you are the fourth pillar (of democracy), we also appreciate that if there is a threat to life, we will come to your rescue.”

In their writ plea filed before the Supreme Court, the journalists, allegedly facing grave threats to their lives and liberty from the Bhind police, claimed that the duo were forced to flee their hometown due to the intensity of these threats and cannot safely approach the Madhya Pradesh High Court, compelling them to directly petition the top court.

The plea highlighted that the two reporters have a strong track record of fearless reporting on corruption and illegal activities, especially illegal sand mining in the Chambal river, allegedly carried out with the support of local police. In the plea, the petitioners named IPS officer Asit Yadav and his subordinates as key perpetrators of the abuse, claiming that the targeting is retaliatory, stemming from their investigative work. The journalists claimed that the duo faced grave threats to their lives and liberty from the Bhind police, including custodial assault, caste-based abuse, kidnapping, and continued harassment.

Man, who raped and blackmailed minor with private videos in Karnataka, arrested

Hubballi, Jan 18 (IANS) A 38-year-old man, who raped a minor girl and blackmailed her with private videos in Karnataka’s Hubballi city, was arrested on Saturday.

The accused has been identified as Ashfaq Jogankoppa, a resident of KEB Layout in Sharavathinagar.

According to police, Ashfaq ran a photocopy and mobile shop at Tipunagar.

The accused used to indulge in sweet talk with the minor girls and women who came to his shop for mobile recharge and pretended to be in love with them.

Whenever the gullible women and minor girls fell into his trap, he exploited them sexually and recorded the act on his mobile. Later, he used the private videos of victims to blackmail them and continued their exploitation.

The police also stated that the accused used to lure minor girls from poor backgrounds by showing off that he could spend handsomely on them.

However, his luck ran out when the parents of a minor girl approached the Kasabapet Police Station and lodged a complaint against the accused.

Acting on the complaint, Kasabapet Police Station Inspector Raghavendra Hallura nabbed the accused in Hubballi.

The police have found private videos of more than 10 women in the personal mobile of the accused.

The accused had also shot himself with the gullible woman and minors during the private act, police sources stated.

The investigations further revealed that once he got the private videos of minor girls, he used to dictate them to show their private parts after making video calls to them and taking screenshots.

Considering the sensitivity of the issue, the police have intensified the investigation. The accused was booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
