PM Modi to attend grand event marking first anniversary of BJP govt in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, June 11 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend a grand event scheduled to be held at the Janata Maidan in Bhubaneswar here on June 20 to celebrate the first anniversary of the BJP Government in Odisha.

“The state government is completing one year in office, and the central government is also celebrating 11 years of successful governance. A mega event will be held at the Janata Madan tentatively at 3 p.m. on June 20, which will be attended by PM Modi. The Prime Minister will be accorded a grand welcome at the Bhubaneswar Airport. The event will be one of the biggest gatherings and a major public meeting in the state,” said BJP state president Manmohan Samal on Wednesday.

He also stated that further details on the event and other VVIP attendees will be shared soon by the party.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, during a press conference on Tuesday, said that his government has achieved several accomplishments since assuming power on June 12 last year. He noted that the BJP government commenced its efforts to fulfil the promises made to people on the very first cabinet meeting immediately after taking oath on the evening of June 12, 2024.

He also stated that providing effective governance and waging a fight against corruption stand out as the most significant accomplishments of his government during the past one year. Majhi also extended his congratulations to PM Modi as the Union Government successfully completed 11 years, celebrating the first anniversary of its third term.

Reflecting on the transformation brought by the Modi Government, CM Majhi stated, “The success of the Modi government, first sworn in on May 26, 2014, will be etched in history in golden letters. Instead of a corrupt, inefficient, and negative sentiment prevailing across the country, a light of hope emerged. Hon’ble Modi Ji has fulfilled the aspirations of the people.”

BJP legislator Atul Bhatkhalkar slammed the Congress leader and threatened legal action against him.

“By paying tribute to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on his birth anniversary, Rahul Gandhi has insulted the entire Maharashtra and the countrymen. Rahul Gandhi is knowingly and unknowingly disrespecting the great men of Maharashtra and the country. This is his nature. He should withdraw this post. Otherwise, he may have to face legal action,” he warned.

BJP leader and Ports and Shipping Minister Nitesh Rane also slammed Rahul Gandhi over his post.

Former MP Sambhaji Raje also expressed his displeasure over Rahul Gandhi’s post. “Does anyone pay tribute on the birth anniversary?” he asked in his post on X.

The Prakash Ambedkar led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi also hit out at Rahul Gandhi. In its post on X, the Vachint Bahujan Aghadi said, “Rahul Gandhiji, you salute and not pay tribute on the birth anniversary. The words you have written are insulting. Apologise and learn the difference between salute and tribute.”

However, state Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal hit back at the BJP asking it not to create any controversy.

State Congress spokesperson Atul Londhe said, “The BJP also used the word mentioned by Rahul Gandhi. Women atrocities are taking place every day, and unemployment is increasing but the BJP does not want to answer this. They are not talking about it. However, they are using a grammatical mistake to make fun of it.”

India embraces cashless revolution in last 11 years: Nirmala Sitharaman

New Delhi, June 9 (IANS) Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday said that India is embracing a cashless revolution with world-class digital initiatives like unified payments interface (UPI).

In the last 11 years, India has seen a remarkable journey under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the finance minister said on a post on X.

“India is embracing a cashless revolution. With Rs 70,000 crore+ worth UPI transactions daily and 59.6 crore transactions in a single day, digital payments are now the norm,” the minister added.

From making life easier for the common citizen to boosting business confidence, it’s been a decade of real and visible change, she further stated.

India today is not just the fastest-growing major economy, but also a key global voice on pressing issues like climate action and digital innovation.

In the month of May, UPI posted a robust growth by processing 18.68 billion transactions, up from 17.89 billion in April. As per data by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the UPI transactions mark a 33 per cent year-on-year (YoY) surge compared to 14.03 billion transactions in the same month last year.

The UPI transactions rose to Rs 25.14 lakh crore (by value) last month, a 5 per cent increase from Rs 23.95 lakh crore in April. This reflects a 23 per cent rise from Rs 20.45 lakh crore in May last year. The average daily transaction volume stood at 602 million, while the average daily transaction value reached Rs 81,106 crore.

The UPI has strengthened its dominance in India’s digital payments system with its share in the total transaction volume rising to 83.7 per cent in 2024-25 from 79.7 per cent in the previous financial year.

The RBI’s annual report shows that UPI facilitated 185.8 billion transactions during 2024-25, which represents a 41 per cent year-on-year increase. In value terms, UPI transactions rose to Rs 261 lakh crore from Rs 200 lakh crore in FY24.

Maoist killed in encounter with security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma

Raipur, May 23 (IANS) A Maoist was killed in an armed confrontation with security forces in Sukma district, Chhattisgarh, on Friday.

Reports from police sources indicate that the Maoist was killed in the exchange of gunfire, while a search operation is still underway in the Kistaram police station area.

Authorities received intelligence suggesting the presence of a large number of Maoists in the dense forests of Kistaram.

Acting upon the information, a joint task force comprising the District Reserve Guard, Special Task Force, and Commando Battalion for Resolute Action was deployed for a search operation.

As security personnel arrived at the location, the Naxalites opened fire, prompting an immediate retaliation.

Sukma Police confirmed that one Maoist was killed during the encounter.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma carried the mortal remains of CoBRA battalion soldier Mehul Solanki, who lost his life in the encounter between security forces and Maoists in the forest area of Abujhmad in Narayanpur on May 21.

Among those neutralised in recent anti-Naxal operations was Basava Raju, a notorious Maoist leader with a bounty of Rs ten crore on his head. Raju was killed during an encounter on the Narayanpur-Dantewada border in Chhattisgarh on Wednesday.

To celebrate their success, DRG soldiers sang, danced, and played with colours on Thursday night, while family members of security personnel performed “Aarti” upon their return.

Videos of the celebrations surfaced in the media. Basava Raju was one of the most wanted Maoists in India, with law enforcement agencies from six states actively searching for him.

He was finally neutralised in the Abujhmad area of Chhattisgarh by DRG forces, along with 26 other Maoists, including Jangu, who had a bounty of Rs 25 lakh.

As a politburo member and general secretary of the Naxal organisation, Basava Raju’s elimination marked a significant success for security forces.

Following the encounter, soldiers celebrated in the jungle near the bodies of slain militants, while fireworks were set off in Narayanpur city.

In addition to Basava Raju, 26 other Maoists were killed in the confrontation, including Jangu Naveen alias Madhu, a Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee Member, who had a bounty of twenty-five lakh rupees.

Several other militants with rewards of ten lakh and eight lakh rupees were also killed. The cumulative reward announced for the deceased Maoists amounted to Rs 11,60,00,000.

During the operation, security personnel recovered a substantial cache of weapons, including three AK-47 rifles, four SLR rifles, six INSAS rifles, one carbine, six .303 rifles, one BGL launcher, one rocket launcher, two Bara bore guns, two Bharmar guns, and other ammunition, according to police officials.
