Previous UP govts promoted ‘one district, one mafia’: CM Yogi Adityanath

Lucknow, Dec 21 (IANS) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday highlighted plans to achieve the target of “one district, one co-operative bank” soon, criticising the previous governments for harming farmers and banks by focusing more on “one district, one mafia”.

Speaking at the inauguration of Youth Cooperative Conference and UP Co-operative Expo-2025, CM Yogi said, “Today, there are over two lakh accounts and Rs 550 crore deposit in district co-operative banks — a complete change in scenario from the pre-2017 era when 16 district co-operative banks were declared defaulters by the RBI.”

During those dark times, these banks faced the threat of losing their licences, he said.

“Today, the district co-operative banks are not defaulters or sick but contributing to the prosperity of farmers and the state,” said the CM.

The Chief Minister said that the 50 district co-operative banks in the state are profitable today.

He said that earlier there was an infection that was slowly taking all the district co-operative banks towards sickness. “But we treated the disease well in time and restored the health of these banks,” he said.

The CM hit out at the previous Samajwadi Party government for ignoring co-operative banks and focusing more on promoting lawlessness and extortion through “one district, one mafia”.

He said the mafia rule in the pre-2017 era spelt doom for the co-operative sector. “Farmers’ money got stuck in co-operative banks. We gradually got farmers’ Rs 4,700 crore restored through the revival of these banks,” he said.

“Today, Uttar Pradesh is rid of mafia and moving towards ‘One district, One Co-operative bank’ as this is the right strategy even for financial inclusion and employment generation,” he said.

Urging the youth to lead the cooperative movement and take the state on the path of development, the Chief Minister said the youth are the future and the architects of the cooperative movement.

“This youth cooperative conference will prove to be a new milestone in the direction of the state’s prosperity and collective development,” he said.

Bengaluru, April 5 (IANS) Commenting on the BJP’s protest demanding the inclusion of two Congress MLAs’ names in the FIR in connection with the suicide of a BJP worker, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated on Saturday that the BJP was indulging in politics over the death of its party worker.

Speaking to the media at Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru, CM Siddaramaiah said, “The police have registered an FIR and are investigating the case. The probe into the BJP worker’s death is underway. I won’t speak much about the case. Once the investigation is complete, action will be taken against those found guilty.”

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, commenting on the suicide and the BJP’s protest, said, “This is a major political conspiracy.”

Home Minister G. Parameshwara stated, “The law is equal for all, including Congress MLAs A.S. Ponnanna and Manthar Gowda. The police department will take action in accordance with legal provisions. They are already gathering details. The incident occurred in February.”

“All facts are being considered, and the department has taken up the investigation. In this background, we will examine the facts and initiate appropriate action.

“The deceased had left a long note on WhatsApp, and this needs to be analysed. Suitable action will be taken based on the findings. The decision on whether to hand over the case to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) will be taken later. As of now, there is no such necessity,” he added.

Minister for Large and Medium Industries, M.B. Patil, reacting to the development on Saturday in Vijayapura said, “The BJP has reacted similarly in two or three earlier cases. They had also targeted Minister K.J. George in the Deputy SP suicide case without reason, and he was later given a clean chit. This is their track record.”

Minister for Power K.J. George, speaking to the media in Chikkamagaluru, said, “What is the big protest the BJP is planning now? In the Dy SP Ganapathy suicide case, they made allegations against me, but the CID, the CBI, and the Supreme Court all rejected those charges.”

“We are saddened by the BJP worker’s death and stand with his family. But the BJP is politicising this issue just like they did in the Dy SP Ganapathy suicide case, the MUDA case and the suicide of IAS officer D.K. Ravi,” he said.

“The filing of an FIR and the naming of accused persons is left to the discretion of the police,” Minister George added.

Vinay Somaiah, a native of Madikeri district, reportedly died by suicide at his office in Bengaluru on Friday. In a note he left behind, he alleged harassment by Congress leaders and named MLAs A.S. Ponnanna, Manthar Gowda, and Congress leader Thennira Maheena as responsible for his decision.

However, the Hennur police registered an FIR naming only Thennira Maheena.

No ITC reversal needed on post-sale discounts: CBIC

New Delhi, Sep 13 (IANS) The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has issued a clarification on how secondary or post-sale discounts will be treated under the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

The move comes after several representations were received seeking clarity on whether such discounts affect tax liability and input tax credit (ITC).

According to the circular, CBIC said that when a supplier issues financial or commercial credit notes for discounts, the recipient will still be eligible to claim full input tax credit.

“This is because such credit notes do not reduce the original transaction value or the tax liability charged on the supply. Therefore, businesses receiving goods at a discounted rate will not have to reverse their ITC,” CBIC added.

The circular also clarified that post-sale discounts given by manufacturers to dealers should not be treated as additional consideration for the dealer’s supply of goods to the end customer.

CBIC explained that the relationship between manufacturers and dealers operates on a principal-to-principal basis, and such discounts are generally meant to push sales through competitive pricing.

However, the clarification noted that where a manufacturer has an agreement with an end customer to supply goods at a discounted price, and provides credit notes to the dealer for this purpose, such discounts will be considered part of the overall consideration.

“In these cases, the discount is seen as an inducement for supplying goods at a lower price,” as per the circular.

The circular further explained that post-sale discounts offered to dealers should not be treated as payment for promotional services.

Dealers often carry out promotional activities that benefit their own sales, and therefore such discounts simply reduce the sale price of goods.

But if dealers are explicitly contracted to carry out activities like advertising, co-branding, or special sales campaigns, GST will apply on such services separately.

The CBIC has asked tax authorities to publicise these clarifications to ensure uniformity in the application of GST law across the country.

HM Shah to launch key development projects across Gujarat today

New Delhi, June 28 (IANS) Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah is on a visit to Gujarat, where he is participating in a series of programmes focussed on development, education, and cooperative growth. On the second day of his visit, HM Shah is scheduled to attend multiple events across Godhra and Ahmedabad, launching key development projects on Saturday.

HM Shah will lay the foundation stone and inaugurate various projects at Shri Govind Guru University in Vinzol, Godhra. The event, to be held at 11:00 A.M. at the university campus, will showcase the government’s ongoing efforts to boost higher education and academic infrastructure in tribal regions of the state.

Later in the afternoon, HM Shah will inaugurate a newly-constructed cooperative complex developed by Adroda Mandali Co-operative Limited under the Model Cooperative Village initiative. The event will be held in Adroda, Ahmedabad at 1:45 P.M., emphasising the importance of empowering rural communities through the cooperative sector.

Continuing his day-long engagements, the Union Minister will inaugurate a newly-built primary school in Juwal, Sanand at 2:30 P.M., followed by the inauguration of the Fangdi Panchayat Bhawan at 3:00 P.M. in Fangdi, Ahmedabad.

Both initiatives are part of efforts to strengthen rural infrastructure and access to quality education and local governance facilities.

He will then participate in a tree plantation drive at the newly-constructed Oxygen Park developed by Sanand GIDC Colony at 3:30 P.M. Shortly thereafter, he will hold discussions with industrialists of the Sanand GIDC at 3:45 P.M. to explore strategies for transforming the industrial area into a green and smart colony.

Earlier on Friday, HM Shah visited the Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) Centre in Gandhinagar, where he reviewed its operations and offered key suggestions to enhance its digital outreach and effectiveness.

His visit underscores the government’s focus on sustainable development and digital advancement in education and industry.
