Rahul Gandhi coming to Indore for politics over human deaths: MP CM Yadav

Bhopal, Jan 16 (IANS) A day before the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha and Congress leader, Rahul Gandhi, is scheduled to arrive in Indore, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, on Friday, launched a scathing attack on him, reiterating his allegation that Congress leaders were playing politics over the death of several people who died in Bhagirathpura area due to contaminated water.

The Chief Minister said that several people died in Congress-ruled states — Hyderabad (Telangana) and Himachal Pradesh, but Rahul Gandhi didn’t visit these places.

“Rahul Gandhi isn’t coming to wipe the tears of people in Indore’s Bhagirathpura, he is playing politics on deaths of human lives,” he added.

Chief Minister Yadav made this remark while addressing an event in Narmadapuram district, during which he transferred the 32nd instalment (nearly Rs 1,836 crore) of Ladli Behna Yojana to more than 1.25 crore beneficiaries of the scheme on Friday.

He also released more than Rs 90 crore to 29 lakh beneficiaries for gas cylinder refilling assistance under the Ujwala Yojana.

Addressing the event, Chief Minister Yadav said that he has felt the pain of people in Bhagirathpura and has taken exemplary action and suspended an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer responsible for the Indore water tragedy.

He was referring to the suspension of Rohit Sisoniya, a 2017 batch IAS officer, who was the Additional Commissioner of Indore Municipal Corporation.

Hitting further at the Congress, Chief Minister Yadav mentioned that thousands of people died in the Bhopal Gas Tragedy (on December 3, 1984) which occurred during the then Congress government and the then Chief Minister late Arjun Singh had facilitated the departure of Warren Anderson, the CEO of Union Carbide Corporation, under the instructions of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

“Rahul Gandhi should apologise for the sins of his father (former PM Rajiv Gandhi) and his grandmother Indira Gandhi. They (Congress) questioned the existence of Lord Ram and opposed the temple in Ayodhya. If the Congress goes with the same trend, people of Madhya Pradesh won’t forgive them,” CM Yadav said.

Rahul Gandhi will arrive in Indore on Saturday around 11 a.m. and he will be meeting the patients admitted in the Bombay Hospital followed by a visit to Indore’s Bhagirathpura.

Nearly a dozen people are still being treated in hospitals and six of them are currently in the ICU.

Indiabulls ‘illegalities’: SC questions ‘friendly’ probe by agencies (Lead)

New Delhi, Nov 19 (IANS) The Supreme Court on Wednesday came down heavily on multiple investigative agencies for adopting a “friendly approach” in probing allegations of financial “illegalities” involving Indiabulls Housing Finance Limited (IHFL), now renamed as Sammaan Capital Ltd.

A Bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi remarked it was “deeply concerned” with the slow and inconsistent pace of action by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), despite the gravity of accusations raised in the pending petition filed by Citizens Whistle Blower Forum (CWBF).

Observing that the Centre agencies did not seem eager to move forward, the Justice Kant-led Bench said that the apex court was concerned about the pace of the investigation. It added that SEBI, in particular, must avoid “double standards” and act decisively in cases involving suspected financial irregularities and possible harm to investors.

The Justice Kant-led Bench remarked that SEBI has full authority to probe the allegations and should act without hesitation. Pushing the CBI to move beyond preliminary investigation, the top court questioned the probe agency as to why no FIR had been registered so far. Filing an FIR would enable the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to effectively examine the money-laundering aspect of the matter, it remarked.

During the hearing, the ED assured the Supreme Court that it would convene a joint coordination meeting with the CBI, SEBI and the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) within two weeks. CWBF has filed a plea before the top court seeking an in-depth, thorough and time-bound investigation by an SIT into various serious “illegalities”, including round-tripping of funds, violations of provisions of the Companies Act, and siphoning of funds committed by the promoters of Indiabulls Housing Finance, its subsidiaries and their promoters.

The plea claimed that several companies, which received large loans from the firm, had small paid-up capital, overlapping directors, common office addresses and no real business activities.

In an earlier hearing, senior advocates Harish Salve and Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the promoters, denied all allegations, terming the claims “fictitious”, while the CBI had previously informed the top court that the agency had not found any wrong in IHFL’s disbursal of loans to corporate entities.

The Supreme Court has now directed authorities, including CBI, ED, SEBI and SFIO, to submit reports by December 17, the next date of hearing.

Following the apex court’s sharp observations, Sammaan Capital’s stock closed at Rs 158.40 on Wednesday, down Rs 24.36 or 13.33 per cent. In a press statement, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, the counsel for Sammaan Capital, said: “The present petition before the Supreme Court does not contain any allegation against Sammaan Capital.

The Court has referred to concerns raised about the previous promoter, Sameer Gehlaut, who has no shareholding or involvement in the company today. The Court has clarified in its order that it has made no observations on the merits of these allegations and has merely permitted the authorities to re-examine the matter.”

“We have no objection to this process. Since there is no allegation from any authority against Sammaan Capital, we are fully open to any inquiry the agencies may wish to conduct — once, twice, or even thrice. We have nothing to hide,” the statement added.

Amid protests, Hyderabad University land row reaches Telangana High Court

Hyderabad, April 1 (IANS) The row over the proposed auction of 400 acres near Hyderabad Central University landed in the Telangana High Court on Tuesday with some students filing a Public Interest Litigation, seeking orders to cancel allotment of land to Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TGIIC) by the state government.

A division bench of the High Court headed by Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul will hear on Wednesday the PIL filed by the students as well as the petition earlier filed by Vata Foundation, an NGO working for environmental conservation.

The Vata Foundation had filed a PIL on March 20, and the same day it came up for hearing in the High Court. While seeking orders to revoke the government order issued in June last year allotting land to TGIIC, the petitioner’s counsel brought to the court’s notice that the land is home to rich biodiversity.

The court was told that the land has many species of animals, plants, mushroom rocks and buffalo and peacock lakes. The division bench had adjourned the hearing to April 7 and had issued notices to the respondents of the state government and TGIIC — to file the counter in 10 days.

The Vata Foundation sought deemed forest status to the land and demanded that it be declared as a national park under Section 35 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act.

The petitioner’s counsel also submitted to the court that the HCU campus had all the features of biodiversity hotspots and was ecologically sensitive, as recognised by the Supreme Court for conferment of deemed forest status in the Godavarman case.

The university students launched a protest recently after the TGIIC began the work to clear the land of trees and rocks for its auction for the development of IT parks. In view of the ongoing work, the students approached the High Court and sought an immediate hearing of their petition.

The Counsel of Vata Foundation also informed the court that TGIIC has deployed bulldozers and earthmovers to remove the trees. He prayed for an early hearing of the PIL.

The High Court informed that it will hear both the petitions on Wednesday.

The dispute relating to the ownership of the land is two decades old. The university has claimed ownership of the land. After a long legal battle, the High Court ruled in 2022 that there was no deed of conveyance that confirmed the transfer of land by the government to the university.

The university had argued that the 400-acre land is part of 2,324 acres allotted to it in 1975. The court held that in the absence of such a deed, the government retained ownership of the land. Last year, the Supreme Court upheld the order of the High Court.

TGIIC’s action to clear the forested land has triggered an uproar among students and green activists. The university witnessed protests for a third consecutive day on Tuesday.

The opposition parties also stepped up their protest. BJP legislators were detained by police when they were trying to march to the university.

The opposition parties have accused the government of destroying the environment. The ruling Congress party has denied this and hit back at the opposition for politicising the issue, though the court has ruled that it is the government land.

Committed to making India global hub for sporting excellence: PM Modi extends greetings on National Sports Day

New Delhi, Aug 29 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his heartfelt greetings to the nation on the occasion of National Sports Day, celebrated annually on August 29 to honour the legendary hockey icon Major Dhyan Chand.

Reflecting on India’s evolving sporting landscape, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s dedication to fostering a culture of sports and fitness, strengthening institutional support for athletes, and expanding access to modern training and competition venues across the country.

PM Modi, who is currently on a two-day visit to Japan, posted on X a message on Friday. He wrote, “Greetings on National Sports Day! On this special occasion, we pay tribute to Major Dhyan Chand Ji, whose excellence continues to inspire generations.”

“In the last decade, India’s sporting landscape has undergone a remarkable transformation. From grassroots programmes that nurture young talent to creating world-class facilities, we are seeing a vibrant sports ecosystem in our nation. Our government remains committed to supporting athletes, building infrastructure and making India a global hub for sporting excellence,” he added.

The National Sports Day commemorates the birth anniversary of one of the greatest hockey players, Major Dhyan Chand, and also emphasises the importance of sports and physical activity.

Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya paid a floral tribute to Major Dhyan Chand at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi earlier this morning.

He later posted on X, “On the occasion of National Sports Day today, a floral tribute was offered to the wizard of hockey, Major Dhyan Chand Ji, on his birth anniversary. Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, New Delhi.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, while paying tributes to the icon, said that he inspires and will forever remain alive in the memory of the countrymen.

“On this day of his birth anniversary, salutations to Major Dhyan Chand ji, the wizard of hockey, who has made India’s talent in hockey wave the flag across the entire world; and heartfelt wishes to all on ‘National Sports Day’.”
