Scott Carson to leave Manchester City after six years

Manchester, June 9 (IANS) Scott Carson will leave Manchester City when his contract expires this summer. The 39-year-old has been at the Club since 2019, acting as a valued part of the goalkeeping unit.

He originally arrived on loan before completing a free transfer in the summer of 2021.

The experienced goalkeeper’s debut for City came in the May 2021 victory at Newcastle United before a second appearance in the Champions League round of 16 second leg with Sporting CP in 2021/22.

He has been part of a squad that has lifted 12 major honours over the last six seasons during what has been a historic period of success for Pep Guardiola’s team.

“Having made his maiden senior appearance for Leeds United all the way back in January 2004, Carson has now spent an incredible 21 years as a professional. During his time at City, Carson has been praised by goalkeeping coach Xabi Mancisidor and peers Ederson and Stefan Ortega Moreno for his work ethic and the effect of his positive attitude amongst the group.

“Everyone at Manchester City would like to thank Scott for his hard work and dedication and wish him the very best of luck for the future,” read the statement by the club.

As per reports, Carson bids his time as City’s backup goalkeeper as the club is planning a move for Marcus Bettinelli, Chelsea’s third-choice goalkeeper. Bettinelli, 33, has played only one game for Chelsea when he was in between the sticks for a FA Cup clash vs Chesterfield in 2022. He also falls into the homegrown criteria which makes a potential transfer more likely for City.

Guardiola’s side are active in the transfer market, which has a 10-day period allowing clubs participating in the FIFA Club World Cup to make adjustments to their squads, which ends on Tuesday.

City will start this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup in Group G. The Cityzens will face Moroccan side Wydad, Abu Dhabi-based Al Ain and Italian giants Juventus for the right to play in the knockout stages.

New Delhi, March 19 (IANS) Olympian boxer Ashish Chaudhary has sought Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s intervention to face off tje challenges faced by state athletes in securing dedicated training time.

In a letter to the Chief Minister, Ashish urged Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to intervene and ensure better support for sportspersons, noting that the lack of preparation time is a major hurdle for Himachal athletes in competing at national and international levels.

When contacted by IANS, Ashish said, “Yes, Himachal’s athletes are facing a lot of problems.”

“As an Olympian from the state, it deeply saddens me to inform you that I am facing significant challenges in continuously advancing my sports career. To excel in sports, years of dedicated training are required. In other states and departments, employed athletes are granted an entire year of on-duty leave to prepare for national and international competitions. However, my department does not provide me with such leave to train for my sport,” Ashish wrote in a letter he shared on social media, tagging CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.

“How can I continue my training effectively and perform well? How can I represent my country when I am not given adequate time for practice?

“I am not the only one facing this issue. Handball and Kabaddi players from the state are also struggling with similar problems. The athletes we compete against belong to the Army, Railways, Haryana, Punjab, and other states, where they are granted year-round leave for training. This creates a significant disadvantage for us because we get very little time to prepare, whereas they have ample time.

“As a result, our state’s athletes rarely make it to prestigious platforms like the Olympics. In several editions of the Olympics, not a single athlete from Himachal Pradesh has qualified. Even when someone does, they do not receive adequate support,” the letter read.

The 30-year-old pugilist fro Mandi stated that despite being part of the Sports Authority of India’s National Center of Excellence (SAI NCOE), he is not granted on-duty leave for training, unlike athletes from other states and departments.

“I sincerely request you to take the necessary steps to address this issue and support athletes. I am a part of the Sports Authority of India’s National Center of Excellence (SAI NCOE), where athletes who perform well at the international level receive training to maintain and improve their performance. However, even when the SAI NCOE issues a relieving letter for my training, my department does not release me based on it. Instead, I am forced to use my earned leave for training.

“I hope this message reaches you, and that you take positive action in the best interest of athletes,” it added.

Ashish won a silver medal at the 2019 Asian Championships and a gold medal at 2019 Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament. He also represented India in the middleweight category at Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

IPL 2025: Gujarat Titans ask Delhi Capitals to bat first in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad, April 19 (IANS) Gujarat Titans have won the toss and opted to bowl first against Delhi Capitals in Match 35 of the IPL 2025 at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Saturday.

DC skipper Axar Patel, playing on his home ground, admitted that he too would have preferred to field first and reflected on the stellar start of the season.

“I also wanted to field. I was confused as it was that hot. I was a little sceptical due to the weather. The bowlers might get tired under the sun. We will look to score well and look to defend. We wanted a good start. We wanted to focus on the process.

“We are focussing on our process and execution. We keep talking about improvements. The dressing room atmosphere has been good. It is important to be clear in your ideas. We have given them clear roles. You might get success sometimes and sometimes you won’t get it,” said Axar at the toss.

Delhi Capitals have won five and lost one of their six matches so far and are currently placed at the top of the points table with 10 points.

“We will bowl first. It is very hot. The wicket looks very good. If you won’t keep much grass, it would crack up. Things have been going well. We don’t think much about the past. It is about turning up on the day. It takes a couple of weeks for the team to gel in,” said Gujarat skipper Shubman Gill.

Meanwhile, the home side, Gujarat Titans, have won four and lost two of their six matches thus far, and are in third place in the points table.

IPL 2025: Glenn Maxwell’s replacement Mitchell Owen joins PBKS squad ahead of RR clash

Jaipur, May 15 (IANS) Punjab Kings have confirmed that all-rounder Mitchell Owen has joined the squad ahead of the resumption of the IPL 2025 on Friday.

Owen, who was signed as a replacement for injured Glenn Maxwell, was signed for Rs 3 crore for the remainder of the tournament earlier this month. He has played 34 T20s and scored 646 runs, including two centuries and a highest score of 108. Owen also has 10 T20 wickets to his name. He was part of the PSL franchise Peshawar Zalmi before linking up with the IPL side.

On his PSL debut season, Owen scored 102 runs in eight innings at an electric strike rate of 192.45.

The 23-year-old went unsold in last year’s IPL mega auction but made a stunning comeback this January by etching his name into Big Bash League history. He matched Craig Simmons’ record for the fastest BBL century, blasting 108 off just 42 balls—including 11 sixes to lead the Hobart Hurricanes to their first-ever title.

Building on his BBL heroics, he hammered a brilliant 149 off 69 deliveries for Tasmania in the One-Day Cup. His explosive form has since attracted franchise interest, earning him contracts in both the SA20 and PSL.

With seven wins from 11 matches, PBKS currently sit third on the points table and are well-positioned for a playoffs push. They will take on Rajasthan Royals at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Sunday.

The Punjab squad has arrived in Jaipur and will resume practice on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Australian duo of all-rounder Marcus Stoinis and wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis are expected to join PBKS for their clash against Delhi Capitals (DC) set to be played on May 24 in Jaipur, said sources to IANS on Thursday.
