Six top surrendered Maoists meet Telangana CM

Hyderabad, Feb 27 (IANS) Six top Maoists of the banned Communist Party of India-Maoist, who surrendered before the Telangana Police, recently called on Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy here on Friday.

The surrendered Maoists, including Thippiri Tirupati alias Devuji, who was the Central Committee Member, Politburo Member and Central Military Commission (CMC) In-charge of CPI-Maoist, and Malla Raji Reddy alias Sangram, who was the CPI-Maoist Central Committee Member, met the Chief Minister at the State Secretariat.

Pothula Kalpana alias Sujatha, Pulluri Prasad Rao alias Chandranna, both former Central Committee members, Bade Chokka Rao alias Damodar, who was Telangana State Committee (TSC) Secretary and Nune Narsimha Reddy alias Ganganna, a former State Committee Member also met Chief Minister Revanth Reddy.

Devuji, Raji Reddy, Chokka Rao and Narasimha Reddy have surrendered before the police on Tuesday while the other two had joined the mainstream earlier.

Government advisors K. Kesava Rao and Vem Narender Reddy, Chief Secretary Ramakrishna Rao, Director General of Police (DGP) Shivadhar Reddy, Additional Director General (Intelligence), Vijay Kumar and Inspector General of Special Intelligence Bureau, Sumati were also present.

At Tuesday’s press conference, DGP Reddy had said that top Maoist leaders rejoined the mainstream following the appeal made by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy last year to CPI-Maoist cadres to renounce violence, return to the mainstream, and actively participate in the development and welfare of the state and its people.

The DGP noted that a total of 591 Maoists have surrendered before the Telangana Police since 2024. They include four CPI-Maoist Central Committee Members and 16 State Committee Members.

He said that now only 11 underground CPI-Maoist cadres, who are native of Telangana are left over.

“Of these, only two Area Committee are presently working in Telangana State Committee, while the remaining are operating in other states, including Chhattisgarh.”

DGP Reddy appealed to all the remaining underground CPI-Maoist cadres, particularly the 11 cadres, who are natives of Telangana, to renounce violence, return to their native villages/towns, reunite with their families, and contribute constructively to the development of the state.

Cold spell persists in Bengal as temperatures dip across Kolkata and several districts

Kolkata, Jan 10 (IANS) The ongoing cold spell in West Bengal intensified on Saturday as temperatures dropped further in Kolkata and several districts, and the chill is expected to continue for the next few days.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata’s Alipore, the temperature dropped as cold northerly winds are freely entering the state, resulting in biting cold. There is also a significant presence of fog at several places.

The minimum temperature in the city rose slightly to 12.1 degrees Celsius on Friday. However, the mercury dropped again on Saturday, recording 11.5 degrees Celsius, which is 2.5 degrees below normal. The maximum temperature in the city on Friday was 22.6 degrees Celsius, which is 2.1 degrees below normal.

A fog warning has been issued across the state. Light to moderate fog is expected in the districts of South Bengal during the morning hours, reducing visibility to 999-200 metres. Some districts may experience fog until midday. A dense fog warning has been issued for north Bengal. Due to fog, visibility in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, and North Dinajpur districts may drop to 199-50 metres. Dry weather will prevail across the state.

Due to the current cold spell, temperatures in several southern districts are even lower than those of north Bengal. Except for Darjeeling, the cold in the south is surpassing that of all other cities in the north. On Saturday, the minimum temperature in Darjeeling was 3.2 degrees Celsius, the lowest in the state.

However, after Darjeeling, no other northern city is on the list of the lowest temperatures. Birbhum’s Sriniketan in south Bengal is on the list, where the mercury dropped to 6.6 degrees Celsius on Saturday. ​

​Several other districts also recorded temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius. The mercury has dropped to 7.7 degrees Celsius in Kalyani, 7.2 degrees Celsius in Bankura, 8.6 degrees C in Burdwan, 8.6 degrees C in Kalaikunda, 8.8 degrees in Asansol, 8.6 degrees in Berhampore, 8.2 degrees Celsius in Suri, 9 degrees Celsius in Uluberia, 9 degrees in Digha, 9 degrees Celsius in Contai, 9.4 degrees in Panagarh, 9.4 degrees in Purulia, 9.8 degrees in Barrackpore, 9 degrees in Jhargram, 10.4 degrees in Canning, 10.2 degrees Celsius in Krishnanagar and 10.5 degrees Celsius in Diamond Harbour.

In North Bengal, the minimum temperature in Kalimpong is 8.3 degrees Celsius. Besides this, the mercury has dropped to 9.7 degrees Celsius in Malda, 9.4 degrees Celsius in Jalpaiguri, 9 degrees Celsius in Alipurduar and Raiganj and 9.4 degrees Celsius in Balurghat.

MP to grant industry-grade benefits to self-sustaining cowsheds: CM Yadav

Gwalior, May 4 (IANS) The Madhya Pradesh government has decided to offer facilities at par with those offered to industries like lands and other financial subsidies for self-reliant Gaushalas (Cowsheds) in Madhya Pradesh.

The Chief Minister said that every mayoral town has also been asked to set up cowsheds to accommodate 10,000 stray, sick or abandoned cows.

“Milk procurement will also be ensured under a guaranteed purchase agreement from these cowsheds, stabilising the dairy sector and securing income for cattle caretaker farmers. Those interested in establishing large-scale Gaushalas will receive 30 per cent financial assistance. We are already offering expenses of 50 cows if someone sets up a cowshed of 200 cows,” said the Chief Minister while addressing a programme in Gwalior at Rajmata Vijyaraje Scindia, Agriculture University.

The programme was organised in honour of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar.

He added that, however, if someone sets up large-scale cowsheds for 5000-10000 cows, the state government will offer a 30 per cent financial subsidy and even land free of cost, as it is offered to large-scale industries, adding that the land will be offered through the state government.

He said we have already done away with the age-old system of auction of stray cows through ‘cattle pounds.

“Now, stray cows have a home in these Gaushalas. The government offers a 25 per cent subsidy on setting up of cowshed for 25 cows, and a subsidy for 50 cows is offered if someone sets up a cowshed of 200 cows or eight units of 25 cows each,” he said.

The Chief Minister said that this scheme now comes with a rider that the state government will procure 100 per cent milk produced at the cowsheds.

“As we are aiming at augmenting our milk production from 9 per cent to 20 per cent in the coming three years. The development of Gaushalas would usher in a new era in the state’s dairy industry, enhancing milk production while boosting the income of dairy farmers,” he said.

He further pointed out that ensuring fair prices for dairy producers remains a priority, and swift action is being taken in this direction.

He said that the state government is systematically addressing the issue of stray cattle by establishing “large-capacity cow shelters” across major cities, including the “hi-tech Kamdhenu Gaushala in Indore.”

The Chief Minister said that public participation will be encouraged to ensure sustainability, adding that the new policy, ‘Self-Sustaining Gaushalas–2025’, has been introduced to promote long-term cattle welfare.

The state has 2200 cowsheds with a combined existing care capacity of 3.45 lakh cows. The state offers Rs 40 per cow to cowsheds. An amount of Rs 505 crore has already been earmarked under the ‘Gau Samvardhan’ scheme in the annual budget 2025-26.

The Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who was the chief guest at the programme, emphasised that the foundation of a prosperous India is rooted in the fields of its farmers.

“While there are moments when we silently carry our thoughts, refraining from discussing certain challenges. But when it comes to farmers, we do not adhere to such restraint. It is our responsibility to find solutions that alleviate their hardships and transform their lives for the better,” he said.

Tripura CM launches Mukhyamantri Niramay Arogya Abhiyan

Imphal, Dec 31 (IANS) Emphasising early detection and awareness of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Wednesday said that the state Health Department is working towards making Tripura a healthy, conscious and welfare-oriented state.

Saha said the Mukhyamantri Niramay Arogya Abhiyan (MNAA) has been launched with the objective of ensuring affordable, quality and timely healthcare services for people from all walks of life across the state.

He described the campaign as a far-reaching and strong initiative of the state government.

The Chief Minister made these remarks after inaugurating the state-level MNAA at Pragna Bhavan. The campaign has been launched by the state Health Department in collaboration with the Tripura National Health Mission. An AI-based pilot training module on tuberculosis (TB) was also launched on the occasion.

Calling the day significant for the Health Department, Saha, who holds the Health and Family Welfare portfolio, said that a new feather had been added to its work.

“Non-communicable diseases have become a major concern globally. At present, around 65 per cent of people in India are suffering from non-communicable diseases. Late detection increases the risk of complications, making early diagnosis extremely important,” he said.

The Chief Minister pointed out that diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart ailments and various types of cancer have become increasingly common among people above the age of 30.

“In many cases, these diseases are not detected at an early stage and later turn serious. To address this, a preventive and people-oriented initiative has been taken to create awareness, identify diseases early and bring patients under treatment,” he added.

Saha said, “Awareness and a disciplined lifestyle are essential to remain healthy. The present state government is committed to providing timely healthcare services, and new health initiatives are being launched with this goal.”

Highlighting the scale of screening efforts, the Chief Minister said that 6.80 lakh people were screened for diabetes and high blood pressure in the state last year.

Of them, 25,259 were diagnosed with diabetes and 49,153 with high blood pressure. In addition, 5.28 lakh women were screened for breast cancer and one lakh women for cervical cancer.

“Those diagnosed were brought under treatment and kept under regular follow-up. Considering the urgency, this campaign is being implemented within a defined time frame and in mission mode. Screening, treatment and follow-up for non-communicable diseases will be carried out through this programme,” he said.

Referring to the launch of the AI-based TB training module, Saha said it reflected the adoption of modern medical technology in the state.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasised human welfare through the use of technology. Keeping that vision in mind, the state government is adopting new and innovative approaches in healthcare,” he said.

The Chief Minister also urged health department staff at all levels to play a responsible role in ensuring the success of these programmes.

Health Department Secretary Kiran Gitte, Tripura National Health Mission Director Saju Wahid, Health Director Debashree Debbarma, Disease Prevention Department Director Anjan Das, and Medical Education Department Director H. P. Sharma were present at the event.
