Sri Lanka to refer India as ‘Bharat’ on plaques during PM Modi’s visit: Report

Colombo, April 3 (IANS) Marking a significant milestone in historic relations, Sri Lanka will refer to India as the ‘Republic of Bharat’ on commemorative plaques that will be unveiled during the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the weekend, Lankan media reported on Thursday.

“The commemorative plaques will be unveiled for three India-assisted projects, which include the groundbreaking of the Sampur solar energy project, the opening of a cool storage complex in Dambulla in Sri Lanka, and the commissioning of 5000 rooftop solar panels at 5000 places of religious worship. While commemorative plaques will have the name ‘Bharat’, the Sri Lankan authorities will, however, use the name ‘India’ in official communications,” reported Daily Mirror.

Citing the G20 Summit, it mentioned that the Indian government has increased the use of the name ‘Bharat’ in its official communications as the country was mentioned as ‘Bharat’, which has its roots in ancient Indian texts, during the official invitations sent to guests during the G20 summit in India in 2023.

“This gesture was reflected when Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake visited India in December last year. The Indian authorities referred to President Droupadi Murmu as the President of Bharat,” the report added.

Prime Minister Modi, currently in Thailand for the BIMSTEC Summit, will travel to Sri Lanka on a State Visit (April 4–6) at the invitation of the President of Sri Lanka, Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi will hold discussions with the Lankan President to review progress made on the areas of cooperation agreed upon in the Joint Vision for ‘Fostering Partnerships for a Shared Future’ adopted during Dissanayake’s India visit, last December.

PM Modi will also have meetings with senior dignitaries and political leaders. As part of the visit, both leaders will travel to Anuradhapura for inauguration of development projects implemented with Indian financial assistance.

Prime Minister Modi last visited Sri Lanka in 2019. Earlier, the President of Sri Lanka paid a State Visit to India as his first visit abroad after assuming office.

Dissanayake had visited New Delhi in December 2024 on his first overseas visit after taking office as President and now Prime Minister Modi will be the first foreign leader to be hosted by the Lankan President in his present capacity.

“India and Sri Lanka share civilizational bonds with strong cultural and historic links. This visit is part of regular high level engagements between the countries and will lend further momentum in deepening the multi-faceted partnership between India and Sri Lanka,” the Ministry of External Affairs stated.

GRSE readies two more warships, including an Advanced Stealth Frigate, for delivery to Navy

Kolkata, March 17 (IANS) The INS Himgiri, the second in a series of Advanced Stealth Frigates being built for the Indian Navy by Mazgaon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd in Mumbai and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd in Kolkata, is nearly complete.

The INS Himgiri is the first of three such warships being built by the GRSE.

The GRSE on Monday announced that the INS Himgiri – which will be armed with Brahmos anti-ship and anti-surface missiles and Barak-8 surface-to-air missiles, completed her Contractor Sea Trial (CST) on March 3. The INS Androth, the second in a series of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts (ASW SWCs) being built by GRSE, also completed her CST on the same date, the GRSE announced.

The smaller, but heavily-armed ASW SWCs are also being built by shipyards in India for the first time. They have been designed and equipped to detect and destroy underwater threats, close to the coast. These multi-purpose vessels can carry out other tasks as well and be part of fleet operations in the deep sea.

The INS Himgiri is the largest warship being built by the GRSE. In fact, these Project 17 Alpha class Frigates, with a displacement of 6,670 tons each, are the largest frigates to have been built in India. The first one in the series, INS Nilgiri, built by the Mazgaon shipyard, was commissioned into the Navy on January 15 this year by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

“A CST is considered the final stage of construction, when a vessel’s seaworthiness is tested. Several factors, such as speed, manoeuvrability, and the performance of on-board equipment are checked. In this case, senior officials from GRSE, Indian Navy and classification societies were on board both warships to monitor their performances,” a senior GRSE official said.

The CST for INS Arnala – the first of the ASW SWCs – was also successfully completed recently and she will be delivered to the Navy shortly. It was for the INS Arnala that GRSE bagged the Raksha Mantri Award 2022 for designing the ‘most silent ship’.

It’s the end of Kejriwal’s politics of lies: BJP MLA Rameshwar Sharma

Bhopal, Feb 8 (IANS) Senior BJP MLA Rameshwar Sharma on Saturday hit out at former Delhi Chief Minister and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, saying it is the end of his “politics of lies”.

Sharma said: “Kejriwal established himself and AAP by spreading lies and propaganda. However, this time, people have thrown him out of power.”

Sharma, three-time BJP MLA from Bhopal’s Huzur Assembly seat, made this statement responding to Delhi Assembly polls trends, which indicated that the BJP was ahead on 48 seats while the AAP on 22.

“Kejriwal should realise that tactics of abusing and spreading lies can’t work for long in politics. He should learn from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who seeks public support humbly and based on work done by his government. Kejriwal’s defeat in the election is the end of his political career,” Sharma said, talking to IANS.

He further stated that Delhi’s mandate has once again proved that people have faith in Prime Minister Modi. He also congratulated the entire Delhi BJP unit for the victory in the election.

Notably, the BJP returned to power in Delhi after more than 26 years.

Several top AAP leaders lost the Delhi Assembly polls. However, three ministers – Gopal Rai, Mukesh Ahlawat and Imran Hussain secured victories from Babarpur, Sultanpur Majra, and Ballimaran, respectively.

The Election Commission of India website showed that, as of now, the BJP has won 35 seats and is ahead in 13 seats, while AAP has managed to win 16 seats and is leading in six seats.

The Congress has this time again drawn a blank.
