Mangaluru: After earning widespread acclaim for its Ramotsava dance production in Bengaluru, the ‘Moodabidire Bunts Sangha’ has added another feather to its cap by winning top honours for its socially themed drama ‘Tallana’. The performance was recognised at a national-level cultural competition for its powerful portrayal of social evils and its message that awareness remains the strongest antidote.
The award came as part of the National Bunts Cultural Competition, held near Bajpe on the outskirts of Mangaluru, marking a symbolic cultural close to 2025 and a meaningful welcome to the new year. Nine cultural troupes from across the country participated in the event, presenting diverse performances rooted in tradition and social commentary.

Among them, the ‘Moodabidire Bunts Sangha’ stood out for its compelling narrative and execution, earning first place along with a trophy and a cash prize of ₹1 lakh. Karkala Bunts Sangha secured second place, followed by Bantwal and Ullal Bunts Sanghas in third and fourth positions, respectively.
What ‘Tallana’ conveys
Through Tallana, the Moodabidire troupe explored the contradictions of modern society—rapid development on one hand and growing social decay on the other. The production highlighted issues such as neglect of the elderly despite cultural reverence for parents, rising caste and communal conflicts, crimes against women, corruption and the growing menace of drugs among youth.

The performance posed unsettling questions: Are acts of cruelty the result of mental illness, or of moral decline? While society speaks of worshipping women, how do crimes like acid attacks persist? The drama argued that while medicine can treat mental illness, awareness and collective responsibility are the only cures for social evils.

The concept was choreographed by Anish Poojary and Smithesh Barya, who also penned the lyrics. The duo trained a team of 65 performers over a month, shaping the production through rigorous practice and collaborative effort.

Multiple awards for Bunts troupes
Moodbidri Bunts Sangha was also recognised as the team that delivered the best social message in the individual category. Rajeshwari Shetty of Surathkal Bunts Sangha won the best presenter award, while Bantwal Bunts Sangha was adjudged best in group dance. Thane Bunts Sangha, Mumbai, received the award for the most disciplined team.

Leaders of the Moodbidri Bunts Sangha credited the success to collective effort and mentorship. Vivek Alva was cited as a key inspiration, while Dr Mohan Alva was acknowledged for his continued support of cultural initiatives. Sangha office-bearers Shobha Hegde and Amrutha Hegde said the victory reaffirmed Moodbidri’s growing identity as a hub of meaningful cultural expression.
