Telangana CM urges Telugus in Gulf to remain alert

Hyderabad, March 1 (IANS) Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has advised all Telugu people residing in Iran and other Gulf countries to remain extremely alert in view of reports of ongoing conflict in the region.

The Chief Minister urged them to strictly follow safety guidelines and adhere to advisories and warnings issued from time to time by Indian embassies in the respective countries.

The Chief Minister stated that, in case of any emergency, the State Government will coordinate with the Union Government to ensure the safe return of Telugu citizens.

He said the Telangana Government is continuously monitoring the situation of people from the State living in Iran and other Gulf nations.

Officials have been directed to remain prepared to take appropriate measures in coordination with the Centre if necessary. They were also instructed to maintain contact with Indian embassies and consulates in those countries.

The Chief Minister emphasised that the safety of Telangana citizens is the State Government’s highest priority and expressed hope that all Telugu people remain safe.

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Assembly Speaker Ayyanna Patrudu has enquired about the safety and well-being of Telugus living in Bahrain. The situation in Bahrain following Iran’s attack on the US naval base is causing concern.

About 50,000 people from Andhra Pradesh are employed in Bahrain. They include a large number of people from Narsipatnam, an Assembly constituency in Anakapalli district represented by Speaker Ayyanna Patrudu.

The Speaker spoke to a few Telugus living in Bahrain and enquired about their safety. He urged the entire Telugu community to remain alert, take shelter in safe places and follow the advisories issued by the local government from time to time.

Ayyanna Patrudu assured the Telugus that if they face any emergency, the state government is ready to help them through the Andhra Pradesh Non-Resident Telugu Society (APNRTS).

He said, if necessary, he would speak to Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu to safely bring back Telugus.

New Delhi, Dec 15 (IANS) Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayaka arrived in New Delhi on Sunday for his three-day visit to India, marking his first foreign trip since assuming office in September.

President Disanayaka will also participate in a business event in Delhi to promote investment and commercial linkages between India and Sri Lanka. Further, he will leave for Bodh Gaya as part of the visit.

Sri Lanka is India’s closest maritime neighbour in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and holds a central place in the Prime Minister’s vision of ‘SAGAR’ (Security and Growth for All in the Region) and India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy.

The visit of President Disanayaka to India is expected to further strengthen the multi-faceted and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries.

The Sri Lankan President’s visit follows an invitation extended by External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar during his visit to Colombo earlier this year, shortly after the National People’s Power (NPP) party came to power.

During his one-day visit to Colombo on October 4, Jaishankar called on President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and conveyed India’s strong commitment to advance bilateral cooperation based on its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and SAGAR outlook.

In his meeting with President Disanayaka, the EAM spoke about ongoing initiatives in the field of energy production and transmission, fuel and LNG supply, solar electrification of religious places, connectivity, digital public infrastructure, health and dairy development. He also highlighted that they would contribute to economic sustainability and provide new streams of revenue.

The Sri Lankan President had mentioned that India’s economic support is critical to realise his vision of a prosperous Sri Lanka and meeting the aspirations of the people. He referred to the potential of the export of renewable energy to India, which could help reduce production costs in Sri Lanka and create additional resources.

I-PAC raid row: SC to hear ED plea alleging interference by CM Mamata Banerjee today

New Delhi, Feb 3 (IANS) The Supreme Court will hear on Tuesday the plea filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) alleging interference by the West Bengal government and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during the recent search operations at the office of political consultancy firm Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC) and the residence of its co-founder Pratik Jain in Kolkata.

A Bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Vipul M. Pancholi will resume hearing the matter on Tuesday, according to the cause list published on the website of the apex court.

In its petition, the ED sought registration of FIRs against Chief Minister Banerjee, the state Director General of Police (DGP), and the Kolkata Police Commissioner, alleging obstruction of lawful duties during simultaneous raid operations.

In the previous hearing, the Supreme Court stayed the FIRs registered by the West Bengal Police against ED officials in connection with the searches, observing that the petitions raise serious questions of alleged interference by state agencies in a central investigation.

Issuing notice to the Chief Minister and senior police officials, the Justice Mishra-led Bench had granted them two weeks to file their counter-affidavits and listed the matter for further hearing on February 3.

In its interim order, the top court had also directed preservation of CCTV footage and other digital storage devices containing recordings of the searched premises as well as the surrounding areas, noting that, prima facie, the petitions raised “a serious issue relating to the investigations by the Directorate of Enforcement or other Central Agencies and its interference by State Agencies”.

It had warned that if such issues are allowed to remain undecided, it could lead to a situation of “lawlessness” in one or more states.

Appearing for the ED, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had described the incident as a case where “mobocracy replaces democracy”, alleging that the Central agency’s officials were intimidated and prevented from discharging their lawful duties.

On the other hand, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing the West Bengal government, had raised objections to the maintainability of the ED’s petition, alleging forum shopping and contending that adequate remedies were available before the Calcutta High Court, where similar prayers were already pending.
